Cédric remains sidelined

Show/hide article…

While the full-back’s recovery is said to be progressing well, he will be forced to sit out of this weekend’s Premier League clash against Arsenal, as his rehab work continues.

“We’ve got Cédric injured,” the manager asserted. “He won’t be ready for Sunday. He is the only one [missing] in the squad.”

Elsewhere, long-term absentee Josh Sims has made a return to the fold this week, after a gruelling seven month spell on the sidelines.

Speaking about the 20-year-old’s progress, Pellegrino added: "After seven or eight months it is not easy to come back, but he was involved in training over the last few days.

“Hopefully he can recover because he’s a young lad, a homegrown player, and the more players ready to compete the better it is for us.”

“I think we can play with different strikers and keep the same idea, we know some are better at keeping the ball and we know Shane [Long] and Manolo [Gabbiadini] are maybe better at running in behind and I think we have to adapt to every situation.”

"They have different profiles and different qualities but the connection between them is good.

"There should be goals because they are an offensive team as well, with offensive potential.

"They have Charlie Austin back now, and of course they have players like Tadic, Redmond, Boufal who are all very strong offensively. They have a good technical level as a team and both side can create chances so there could be goals there.

"The result against Everton and the quality of their performance against Bournemouth [shows Southampton are back on the rise].

“I thought in the second half they always looked dangerous against Bournemouth and capable of scoring - it is true that if you look at the number of goals they scored and the quality of their last two performances, it looks like they are coming back to a much more dangerous team.”

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino expects Arsenal to challenge for honours

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino believes it is too early to rule Arsenal out of the title race.

The Gunners have the opportunity to make up ground on Manchester City when they travel to face the Saints in the early kick-off on Sunday.

Arsenal are currently 15 points behind the league leaders, but Pellegrino believes Arsene Wenger’s side can challenge for honours despite their inconsistent start to the season.

“We are more or less in the middle of the season and it is really early to make comments or draw conclusions,” said Pellegrino.

"The last third of the season is the most important part. Arsenal have to have this race at the end with good performances. They are a really strong side.

"They’re not in the Champions League this year but most of the time they are in Europe and are always fighting for the top four.

“They’ve bought important players and I think they are a really good team - they are a really difficult team to beat. They are a top team.”

Charlie Austin is expected to start for the Saints after scoring three goals in his last two appearances, and Pellegrino has been impressed with the 28-year-old’s progress since returning from injury.

“Hopefully he will continue in the same way now his confidence is high,” said Pellegrino. "This is important for him and important for the team.

“We have to create chances to try and find in every single game different solutions, different ways to try and attack. Every team knows how to defend. Every year they are better. We have to be really clever.”

Pellegrino believes Austin can challenge for a place in England’s World Cup squad if he continues to impress with the Saints.

He said: "It’s not just him. We’ve got English players with quality that can help the national team.

“It will be good if they represent England in the World Cup because it means they are playing well at Southampton.”

Southampton defender Cedric Soares ruled out of Arsenal clash

Show/hide article…

Cedric Soares has been ruled out of Southampton’s Premier League game against Arsenal on Sunday with a hamstring injury.

The Portuguese full-back, who was named Southampton’s player of the month for November, will miss the Gunners’ visit to St Mary’s due to a hamstring injury suffered in the recent 2-1 loss to Manchester City.

“We’ve got Cedric injured,” said Pellegrino. “He won’t be ready for Sunday. He is the only one [missing] in the squad.”

Long-term absentee Josh Sims returned to training for the first time in seven months on Friday and the Saints manager pleased to have more competition within his squad as a result.

Speaking about the 20-year-old’s return, Pellegrino said: "After seven or eight months it is not easy to come back, but he was involved in training over the last few days.

“Hopefully he can recover because he’s a young lad, a homegrown player, and the more players ready to compete the better it is for us.”

Southampton vs Arsenal | Teams, streams and predictions

Show/hide article…

Arsene Wenger is hoping Arsenal can get back to winning ways in the Premier League against Southampton on Sunday.

The Gunners lost 3-1 at home in a damaging defeat against Manchester United last weekend, but followed that up with a morale-boosting 6-0 Europa League win against BATE Borisov on Thursday night.

Wenger’s men currently sit fifth in the table, and will be hoping to beat Mauricio Pellegrino’s inconsistent Saints on their own turf to boost hopes of a top-four finish.

Southampton host Arsenal at St Mary’s with kick-off scheduled for 12pm on Sunday, December 10.

The match will be shown live on BT Sport 1, with coverage from 11:30am. BT Sport subscribers will be able to stream the match online via the video player and the BT Sport app.

Alternatively, you can follow all the build-up and action from 11am with Standard Sport’s live blog.

Cedric Soares is out due to a hamstring injury suffered in the recent 2-1 loss at Manchester City.

Saints boss Mauricio Pelligrino has no other injury concerns and must decide which of his strikers will be given the nod to lead the line against Arsenal.

Arsenal are sweating over the fitness of Shkodran Mustafi. The defender was forced off early on in last weekend’s defeat to Manchester United and could be out of the St Mary’s clash with a thigh problem.

Santi Cazorla (ankle) is the only other absentee with manager Arsene Wenger set to recall a host of first-team players rested for Thursday’s 6-0 Europa League win over BATE Borisov.

Nathan Redmond could have a spring in his step after what happened with Pep Guardiola last week.

One of the best managers in the business giving you his time and letting you know he values your ability, it can only be beneficial. I do not know a player on the planet who would not feel good after that.

It looked aggressive but it was done with good intent and should have a positive impact on him. Redmond himself has spoken positively about it and I think that was a really good thing.

I fancy Arsenal on Sunday, with the way they have been playing. Some of their attacking play against Manchester United last weekend was outstanding and they were unlucky.

I am not sure Southampton will be able to cause them the same problems United did.
