Long doubtful for WBA trip

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino revealed that the striker is the only concern he has ahead of the trip to The Hawthorns, outside of long-term absentee Charlie Austin.

“Maybe Shane will have problems to be ready for this game,” said the Saints boss. "It’s his hamstring, it’s a little bit tight, but we will decide on Friday.

“Shane and Charlie are the only two players who are outside of the group right now.”

if i give the opportunity to somebody it is because i feel he is really well prepared and deserves to be on the pitch.

As he has done in previous rounds, Pellegrino intends to field a strong side for the match, but also revealed he may bring in one or two players who haven’t had so much of an opportunity recently.

“We have an amazing opportunity in the FA Cup to move forward,” he said.

"We want to use this competition for many reasons, to try to put some players who didn’t play too much, to try to improve as a team, and also because we want to go forward.

"I will prepare the game to try to win. If I give the opportunity to somebody it is because I feel that he is really well prepared and deserves to be there on the pitch.

“I will not give anything for free. I want to put out the players who I feel will represent our club in the best way.”

U23 Report: Watford 0-2 Saints

Show/hide article…

Both of Slattery’s goals came courtesy of set-pieces, as an in-swinging free-kick outfoxed the home defence to give Saints an early lead, before he converted a penalty when Siph Mdlalose was fouled in the box.

It was a dominant performance from Radhi Jaïdi’s men, who controlled the game throughout and may have added to their lead in the second period.

The young Saints made a confident start and edged in front as early as the fifth minute.

After Jake Hesketh was caught from behind, Slattery’s curling free-kick into a crowded penalty area eluded everybody and crept inside the far post.

The lively Hesketh was involved again when he burst into the box and forced a save from Watford keeper Nathan Gartside, whose parry into the air was headed goalwards by Mdlalose, but the winger was unable to generate the necessary power and Gartside was able to recover.

Saints were in total control, and Watford could have few arguments when the visitors doubled their lead in the 33rd minute.

The Hornets’ attempt to play out from the back backfired when Mdlalose won possession high up the pitch and found Michael Obafemi.

When Obafemi looked to play a one-two with Hesketh, the return pass deflected into the path of Mdlalose, who was brought down by left-back Ben Jones.

Up stepped Slattery to score his second, confidently sending Gartside the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Watford responded with a brief flurry in which Jack Rose tipped a header over the crossbar before Aaron O’Driscoll made a superb block to deny Joy Mukena from the resulting corner.

Saints might have been out of sight before half time. Another solo run from Hesketh saw him find Nathan Tella on the left, whose cross towards the far post just needed a touch from Mdlalose, who failed to make any sort of contact from close range.

Watford’s brightest spark was winger Dion Pereira, who created the hosts’ best chance on the hour when his low cross found its way through to David Sesay, whose shot towards Rose’s left-hand post was smartly pushed aside by the Saints keeper.

If the Hornets were to score the next goal Saints could have been in for a nervy finale, but instead Jaïdi’s players pushed for the killer third.

Another driving run from Hesketh carried him over the halfway line, again feeding Tella to his left, whose cross deserved a better finish from Mdlalose, but the South African could not quite wrap his foot around the ball as it skipped up off the turf.

Obafemi came close to adding his name to the scoresheet, only to see his header cleared off the line from a Slattery corner.

Slattery must have thought he would have the chance to complete his hat-trick when substitute Olufela Olomola was sent tumbling by Gartside late on, but referee Alan Young was not interested in Saints’ appeals for another spot-kick.

Mauricio Pellegrino says Southampton FA Cup tie against West Brom ‘like a final’

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino says Southampton and West Brom “have nothing to lose” ahead of their fifth-round FA Cup tie on Saturday.

Both sides are in the relegation zone with 11 games left of the Premier League season - West Brom sit rock bottom and are six points adrift of Southampton in 18th.

Pellegrino suggested he could be making some changes to his starting eleven at the Hawthorns, but insists he will be setting up his side with the intention of progressing to the FA Cup quarter-finals.

“Yes we are taking the FA Cup seriously, for many reasons,” said Pellegrino.

"Both teams have nothing to lose - we have to go forward because it’s like a final. Obviously, we have another chance if it’s a draw but that we have this possibility to progress is amazing.

"We want to move forward to the next round but also it can help us to improve as a team, to introduce players who have not played so much in recent games. It can also help us to believe more in our improvement since January.

"For those aspects I think it’ll be really important to play seriously in the game, and to try to do our best.

On their previous trip to the Hawthorns, on February 3, Southampton earned a 3-2 victory and Pellegrino anticipates that this weekend’s game could involve even more goals with each side desperate to progress to the next phase.

“I can imagine both teams changing their style of play, maybe more attacking football because both teams need to score goals to progress,” he added.

Charlie Nicholas’ FA Cup predictions: Huddersfield to trouble Manchester United again?

Show/hide article…

Charlie Nicholas delivers his predictions for the FA Cup fifth round - and backs Huddersfield to trouble Manchester United again.

Liverpool followed Arsenal in suffering a surprise exit in the last round of action and, after avoiding each other in the fifth-round draw, the remaining members of the top six will be looking to avoid upsets.

Here’s what Charlie is predicting for the eight ties…

Are Chelsea back in business? No. It was a result they needed against West Brom but once again they relied on Eden Hazard to do everything.

They’re one bad result away from being back in the focus again and with Barcelona and two trips to Manchester to follow they are still in a volatile position.

They’ll win this but it still won’t mean they are back on track because the tensions between Antonio Conte and the board are only going to resurface as we get closer to the summer.

Hull have picked up a little bit, not before time. I didn’t quite see them being in the position they found themselves in.

They’ll sit in and defend and the good news for them in that Chelsea need to give Hazard a rest ahead of such an important run of fixtures. Alvaro Morata and Willian will come in and they should have enough to record a comfortable win.

Chelsea 3-0 and Willian to score first (18/1 with Sky Bet)

I think Riyad Mahrez will start on Friday and it is a nice opportunity for him to start to get the crowd behind him. I don’t think they’ll turn on him unless he looks lazy.

Leicester are in a situation where they’re not going to make Europe and certainly not go down, so why not go for it? They’ve won a couple of League Cup titles and the Premier League, so why not have a real go for this competition?

Charlie predicts: 3-1 and Mahrez to score first (45/1 with Sky Bet)

We always have to take on board the situations the sides are trapped in and Swansea’s position is clearly one which makes this match less important.

However, Carvahal will want to prove a point and say: ‘I actually did really well for two seasons and you turned on me after one bad derby result’.

A replay won’t suit either of these but I think that will be what they end up with after a feisty affair.

Charlie predicts: 1-1 and Lucas Joao to score first (22/1 with Sky Bet)

With Coventry in the shake-up for the play-offs and Brighton still in the relegation mix, neither of these sides really need this game right now.

Brighton are at home and they’ve got a bit of momentum, which is so important at this time of the year, so I’d like to think they’ll look to build on that by going with a strong side.

Charlie predicts: 3-0 and Jose Izquierdo to score first (35/1 with Sky Bet)

Who wants this game less? Which line-up will they play? The win West Brom got at Exeter, when Jay Rodriguez and Salomon Rondon scored, put them on a nice little run which made you think they could get out of the relegation mix.

I think West Brom will be marginally more positive as they’re at home and I’m going for Rodriguez to score against his old club in a tetchy affair.

Charlie predicts: 1-0 and Rodriguez to score first (25/1 with Sky Bet)

After last Sunday you’ve got to think Huddersfield must fancy a repeat of their victory back in October. Jose Mourinho won’t want his side embarrassed twice but they’ve a Champions League tie in Seville midweek to think about.

Manchester United are going through this dilemma as to how they fit in Alexis Sanchez. They want to give him the free role but that means Paul Pogba can’t have that freedom.

Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard have gone a bit cold after doing so well, so I can see another dangerous game for United.

Charlie predicts: 2-2 and Sanchez to score first (55/1 with Sky Bet)

I thought we were going have a good old gritty cup tie and then Rochdale decided to put down a new pitch.

Mauricio Pochettino will make a good few changes because that show of mental strength in Juventus will have been a really draining experience.

Fernando Llorente and Moussa Sissoko will come in as Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen in particular need a rest. Heung-min Son should start and with the new pitch, I think Spurs will get the job done.

I think this will be another game for Toby Alderweireld to be eased back in again. I don’t think there is anything more to his absence than managing his recovery because Pochettino is a very honest and open man.

Charlie predicts: 0-2 and Son to score first (13/1 with Sky Bet)

Wigan will have the great memories to motivate them here from their FA Cup win.

However, I think this will be another canter for Pep Guardiola’s men, with Leroy Sane back in the mix, perhaps resting Sergio Aguero.

With no midweek game it should be a pretty strong City side so I can only see a third successive defeat for Wigan and City to move another step closer to the quadruple.

Charlie predicts: 0-3 and Sane to score first (18/1 with Sky Bet)
