Auctioned shirts raise over £5k for Scope

Show/hide article…

Thanks to the generous support of Southampton fans and Virgin Media, auctioned shirts from the Manchester United game raised £5,585.85 for Scope.

Virgin Media donated their match shirt sponsorship to the disability charity, before the 27 worn and unworn shirts were then auctioned by Saints Foundation on behalf of Virgin Media, with 100% of the profits being donated to Scope.

The largest price for an individual item was Manolo Gabbiadini’s match-worn shirt, which went for an impressive total of £515.

Virgin Media also put on further fundraising on the day of the game and subsequently raised £1,091.67 from bucket collections and donated £25k from the half-time penalty shoot-out competition.

All of the money raised will help Scope continue to support disabled people and their families, as well promoting equality and raising awareness of key issues.

Liverpool transfer news: Eight Virgil van Dijk alternatives – according to statistics

Show/hide article…

Liverpool’s start to their summer transfer business hasn’t quite gone to business as they failed to land long-term Virgil van Dijk.

The Reds have stood down from their interest following high-level discussions with Southampton, and must now do their dealings elsewhere as Jurgen Klopp attempts to strengthen his defence.

Dutch star Van Dijk is a fairly unique player, dominant aerially but also very capable stopping opponents with his feet and playing the ball forward with ease.

But who else is capable of matching someone like the Saints star? Taking a look at his statistics on WhoScored, we look at eight players who could fit the bill for Liverpool.

Well done Southampton for taking a stand against Liverpool on Van Dijk

Show/hide article…

It’s Hot or Not time again as Sportsmail’s IAN LADYMAN reveals what’s been making him feel warm and what’s been leaving him cold.

Can’t help feeling Virgil van Dijk may still end up at Liverpool but at least Southampton have taken a stance against the practice of tapping up players that is now so widespread nobody really tries to hide it any more. On that note, there is at least one other prominent club that knows Liverpool have recently been ‘all over’ their player but are not minded to do anything about it.

The former England midfielder is still going strong at Fulham at the age of 36 but his publicly-stated desire to move into management at some stage has not gone unnoticed. Premier League clubs including his old friends at Tottenham are watching closely with a view to offering him a place on the first rung of the coaching ladder.

Hard not to like a bloke who can bowl at 90mph off a five-pace run-up, gives it a biff when he bats and usually has a smile on his face. Not sure about some of that dancing in the outfield – you will only look daft when you drop one - but we might just have a surprise star of the Champions Trophy in our team. Keeping him fit for the Ashes this winter is vital.

Hard to object to the Spaniard’s complaints about the Manchester weather given that the heating was on here during election night. But the fact that Manchester City player admitted in an interview that he can barely speak any English was more damning. How can players expect to settle in a foreign town if they haven’t the confidence even to say good morning to the postman?

If the Chelsea manager really did tell Diego Costa by text message that he was no longer wanted, it’s hard to believe the volatile Spaniard didn’t reply in kind. But perhaps the best comeback would simply have been: ‘Who is this? I don’ t have this number in my phone…’

Superb effort by Real Madrid to retain the Champions League and hard to begrudge the presence of their families on the big night. But making the defeated Juventus players wait for half an hour to collect their loser’s medals while they posed for pictures with wives and children was just wrong. I blame UEFA. I usually do.

Liverpool’s past shows that chasing players like Virgil van Dijk is unwise

Show/hide article…

The mess Liverpool made of their bid for Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk dominates the headlines, focusing largely upon their arrogance and incompetence.

Rightly so. It’s amazing how often clubs try to keep the people who actually own a player out of the loop. Liverpool certainly learned a hard lesson this week. A lesson they perhaps should have learned after nearly losing Luis Suarez to Arsenal in 2013 with their smug, insulting £40,000,001 bid.

The Reds have, publicly at least, ended all interest in signing the Dutch defender, so it now feels less of a concern that some fans heard the original £60m asking price and gasped in astonishment.

Some have accused Southampton of merely feigning outrage in order to raise their price to a staggering £75m, but their anger was genuine. That figure, just as much as any threatened Premier League transfer ban, might be why Liverpool capitulated so swiftly.

The Reds’ defensive woes are a long, sorry tale. After a decade of strong defensive performances under Gerard Houllier and Rafa Benitez, Liverpool have since conceded far too many goals for any side hoping to compete in the league.

In the so-called “Noughties” 10 seasons ended with a 32.5 average number of goals conceded. In the 2010s they’ve already let in 352 with two full seasons still left in the decade.

Football might have moved on a little in England from the days when stifling tacticians like Houllier, Benitez and Jose Mourinho at Chelsea focused on a solid back line. Even so, it was becoming clear Liverpool had to do something if they were ever to compete meaningfully for the title again.

Signing superior personnel like Van Dijk was certainly needed, but it distracted more than a little from the real job at hand, with defence largely dependent upon rigid discipline and focus as well as fierce primary protection from midfield.

In these areas Liverpool are lacking and fans who regarded the Van Dijk fee as astronomical and even unnecessary weren’t about to celebrate even more waste on one individual, with his actual impact still questionable.

With some fans there is no convincing them of how past Liverpool managers built good teams with ingenuity, hard work and organisation. Aspects of the Van Dijk reactions almost had a macho, chest-beating hysteria to them. They think talk of the past regarding Liverpool’s smart transfer moves goes back to the days of black and white television. Benitez managed the Reds at the beginning of this decade while still managing to find decent defenders at reasonable prices.

He admittedly inherited Jamie Carragher, Steve Finnan and Sami Hyypia but where are the modern equivalents of Alvaro Arbeloa, Daniel Agger or Martin Skrtel? From a casual glance at Liverpool’s modern transfer policy it seems more is paid for less, year after year. That said, Joel Matip cost Liverpool nothing and was thought to be an improvement on what went before. Such optimism soon was washed away in the euphoria over Van Dijk – a bubble cruelly burst by Southampton’s aggrieved intransigence.

Lest anyone forgets, 20016-17 was the season when Liverpool selected the right-footed midfielder James Milner at left-back for the season and often used Lucas Leiva or Ragnar Klavan at centre-half. With one or two decent signings and better organisation, Liverpool might improve their defensive record again next season.

Was a record fee for a central defender really needed? It soon became more about losing face with other big clubs in the Premier League, with the hierarchy’s eagerness to publicly revel in their “coup” their ultimate undoing.

Dominic Solanke’s two goals for England U-20s did manage to put a smile back on supporters’ faces, since his transfer is precisely the sort of shrewd deal Liverpool were once famous for. The last striker they bought from Chelsea, Daniel Sturridge, also proved an astute buy at a time the Reds practically stole an underappreciated Philippe Coutinho from Inter Milan.

Liverpool’s new CEO Peter Moore was mocked on social media for emphasising the Coutinho deal as the sort of business he was interested in. His comments were seen as a cop-out, another in a litany of excuses for the club’s owners not to spend serious money.

Fans who’d witnessed the laborious efforts of Andy Carroll, Stewart Downing, Lazar Markovic, Mario Balotelli and Christian Benteke ought to have realised surely that whether cheap or expensive, what matters most if is if Liverpool get the right man.

This might seem to an outsider a grotesque rationalisation of Liverpool’s failure to sign Van Dijk. It isn’t. It’s getting boring pointing out how Liverpool’s dominant years – or when Houllier and Benitez almost took this club back to the top – were based on ingenuity.

The club’s administrative and PR capabilities took a severe hammering this week. Fair enough, but a continuous supporter cacophony to spend big regardless of who it is spent on isn’t helpful, either.

Premier League free transfers: John Terry’s Chelsea exit now official

Show/hide article…

Premier League clubs have confirmed their retained lists for next season - with players missing knowing they are out of contract this summer and have been released.

This year includes some big names, including John Terry, whose exit from Chelsea was made official when his name appeared on the free transfer list.

Also named is Joey Barton, who leaves Burnley after being banned from football for 18 months for gambling offences.

Arsenal flop Yaya Sanogo’s spell at the Emirates Stadium is over after the club confirmed he will be released this summer.

Sanogo made 20 competitive appearances for Arsenal, including in the 2014 FA Cup final victory over Hull City, but only scored one goal for the club.

The French forward moved to London from Auxerre in 2013, but had not scored for Arsenal since November 2014, when he struck against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

He spent long spells out with injury and away from Arsenal on loan, and earlier this week said he would be leaving the club permanently, saying his ‘adventure’ had ended.

Sanogo is not the only senior Premier League striker seeking a new club, after Everton announced they are releasing Arouna Kone.

Kone made marginally more impact at Everton than Sanogo managed at Arsenal, scoring 10 goals in 62 appearances.

Also out the exit door is Martin Caceres at Southampton, the Uruguay international and former Juventus defender, who made only one league start for the Saints.

Caceres joined Southampton in February as a free agent after a long term knee injury, but was not able to make an impact.

Among the most prolifically ruthless clubs are Crystal Palace and Manchester City, who have released several first team players each.

Willy Caballero, Gael Clichy, Jesus Navas and Bacary Sagna are among those not kept on by Pep Guardiola at City, with a new wave of younger signings such as Bernardo Silva and Ederson arriving at the club.

Palace meanwhile have let a number of established Premier League players go, including Fraizer Campbell and Joe Ledley.

Ex-Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini has also left Selhurst Park, as has Jonathan Benteke, brother of Christian.

Famous Southampton face more likely to take over at Saints than Leicester were to win the league, according to these odds

Show/hide article…

One betting company is offering better odds on Craig David taking over at St Mary’s than there were of Leicester City winning the Premier League.

Paddy Power are offering odds of 500/1 for the next Saints manager to be the Southampton-born R&B singer, despite Ladbrokes famously offering odds of 5000/1 on Leicester City becoming 2015/16 Premier League champions - which they then went on to do.

But Craig David is a long way off the favourite for taking over from current manager Claude Puel, whose future still remain in doubt - Thomas Tuchel is currently being tipped at 7/2 by Paddy Power.

The speculation over the job comes after a mixed first season for Puel on the south coast. Despite finishing 8th and reaching the EFL Cup final, Saints won just one of their final eight matches and did not score in any of their last five games at St Mary’s.

In a Daily Echo poll, 68 per cent of fans thought Puel should leave the club.

Southampton continue talks with Lander Sports Development

Show/hide article…

Talks remain ongoing between Southampton and Lander Sports Development after the Chinese consortium were cleared by the Premier League.

Concerns were raised by the League about the group’s suitability to secure a £200million takeover of the south coast club.

Southampton owner Katharina Liebherr is open to major investment and has engaged with Lander, but a potential deal was halted by the Premier League while they investigated the company.

Issues centred around Lander’s owner and chairman Gao Jisheng who has admitted to bribing Chinese officials more than a decade ago and was given immunity from prosecution for his testimony.

Premier League officials have been in dialogue with Lander lawyers since April. Representatives of Liebherr were also present in the meetings.

Liebherr believes that the club needs new investment to take them to the next level as she does not have the wealth required to turn them into a side able to compete for Champions League qualification, as is their ambitions.

It is understood she would retain a 20 percent stake in the club in any deal, that could be bought out at a later date.
