Boufal to miss Black Cats trip

Show/hide article…

Boufal was taken off during the second half of last Saturday’s 3-1 defeat, and he will not be able to make the trip to the Stadium of Light for the team’s latest Premier League clash.

Puel also says it is too early to tell whether the Morocco international will be fit to feature in the EFL Cup final later this month.

However, the Saints boss has no other new injury worries ahead of this Saturday’s game.

He said: "Sofiane is not available for this game and we will see for the final, for his recovery and his work. I don’t know for the moment. But against Sunderland he is not available.

“We have long-term injuries, but no other new injuries. We are lacking Sofiane Boufal, who is an important player for us, and that is it.”

Saints have to show their work was worthwhile

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has been loving his job for the past week with a rare chance to work with his players on the training ground.

Saints have already played 38 competitive first team fixtures this season, meaning pretty much every week has included a midweek fixture, as well as extensive travelling.

It has left Puel with hardly any time to try and implement new ideas with his squad, and he has been desperate to try and spend more time with his players in a bid to try and stabilise Saints’ form.

He has had the luxury of week without a game to prepare for tomorrow’s trip to Sunderland, while he has a staggering 15 days to then get ready for the EFL Cup final against Manchester United.

It is so much time that Puel could be forgiven for wondering what he should be doing.

“It is too much now,” laughed the Saints boss.

“It is a pleasure to play every three days but it’s different competitions and all the good possibilities for all the players to play and have game time and to improve with young players also is a good thing.

“Sometimes one week to recover or work is very important.

“I think it was a good thing to recover, not just in the physical but also in the mental, in the thought.

“It is very important sometimes to stay calm, to recover with their families and come back with strength, with good character and good spirit. This is very important sometimes.”

The break came at a good time with Saints’ defeat to West Ham leaving them with six losses in seven Premier League games.

It gave Saints a chance to reflect and to focus on the future.

“Of course disappointed and I think angry also with the last result,” said Puel of the mood.

“We know it is not sufficient and it is important now to correct this and to give a good reaction and a good answer and to prepare after the important game.

“The best is to prepare this game and to take a good result away at Sunderland of course.

“I think all the players, the squad, with a good concnetration, a good focus.

“It is always difficult with this loss to have good confidence of the players and to score the last gesture, the good pass, but I saw all this week good work on the training session.

“For the first time it was a week just to prepare this game and it is the first time for a lot of weeks, a lot of months.

“For the staff this is a privilege because it is rare since the beginning of the season.

“It was good to recover at the start of the week and then good concentration.”

Sunderland might be bottom of the table but come into the match on the back of a stunning 4-0 win away at Crystal Palace and Puel admitted: “All the games are dangerous, all the teams with potential, with good players.

“This team come back in a good level, physical and in confidence with their last result, and also the same on the pitch with strong pressing, physical, good runs and quality also. Always it is Defoe for example.

“It is a team that comes back with a good level and it’s a difficult game for us but I prefer to stay concentrate and focussed about my team.

“The work was interesting this week and now it’s important to see this on the pitch with a strong character and I am sure we will make a strong game with Sunderland with confidence but we also have a lot of qualities.”

Koeman: You can’t compare Everton with Southampton

Show/hide article…

Everton manager Ronald Koeman has not ruled out a strong finish to the season launching the club into Champions League contention.

A week ago the Dutchman had targeted Manchester United, one place and one point above them, as their immediate priority but with fourth-placed Arsenal now only seven points away he believes they could yet spring a major surprise.

Last season Koeman got Saints into the Europa League with a late charge which saw them take 23 points from their final 10 matches to leap into sixth.

It will take something even more special to catapult Everton into the top four - where they have finished just once in the Premier League era - especially with the six other sides already battling it out among themselves.

But last weekend’s 6-3 win over Bournemouth has raised confidence levels further and after taking 17 points from a possible 21 they certainly have the momentum.

“You have changed your opinion now,” Koeman said when asked whether Champions League qualification was a possibility.

"You were always speaking about top six and now you’re saying we need to talk about the first four.

"Everything is possible because everybody knows the Premier League is so tough, and it’s not about the opponent you play.

"I did not change my mind (on this season’s aim), it’s step by step. If we don’t win this Saturday, we’ll talk about maybe the first eight. We need to be realistic.

"The next target now is the team above us which we need to catch.

"You can’t compare Everton with Southampton. Yes, normally, my teams are always in a good state until the end of the season.

"That’s what we try to plan: you have more possibilities to win the game if the team is really fit.

“With Southampton, we won seven of the last eight - if we keep that at Everton then, yes, maybe something special will be possible this season.”

Koeman’s last stat is not quite accurate. Saints won seven of their last nine league games in 2015/16 - drawing at Everton and losing at Leicester as well.

Who else is alongside Gabbiadini in Saints’ top flight debut goalscorers list?

Show/hide article…

MANOLO Gabbiadini last week became the 14th Saints player to score on his league debut for the club in a top flight fixture.

Here, the Daily Echo looks back at the others in that list.

The man who scored Saints’ most famous goal netted became the first to score for the club on his top flight debut.

Stokes took just 14 minutes of his debut against Burnley in April 1969 to open the scoring from a Mick Judd cross.

Stokes scored from another header 11 minutes later as Saints romped to a 5-1 Dell success.

Introduced as an 86th minute substitute at home to Manchester City, the striker promptly scored with his first touch to complete a 4-1 Dell victory.

The Scottish striker scored after just 23 minutes of his top flight debut in March 1986 against Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Kept his place for the next game against Liverpool, but was substituted in the second half and never played for the first team again.

The Northern Ireland international striker became the only player in Saints’ post-war history to score a hat-trick on his debut. Signed from Bournemouth for £400,000 after impressing in the 1986 World Cup finals, Clarke bagged a treble in a 5-1 opening day hammering of Queens Park Rangers at The Dell.

Signed from Grimsby for £150,000 in November 1986, Hobson completed Saints’ 3-1 home win over Watford. He swept in a rebound after keeper Tony Coton could only parry a shot fom Hobson’s former Grimsby colleague, Glenn Cockerill.

The £430,000 signing from Italian club Bari took just 36 minutes to net on his debut against West Ham on the opening day of the 1988/89 season.

The £350,000 signing from Benfica netted on his debut at Tottenham in March 2000. It was not a memorable game, though, when El Khalej part of a Saints rearguard that conceded seven goals.

After making a £3.25m switch to Saints from Sunderland in the summer of 2003, the one-time Dell trainee hammered a 25-yard goal in an opening day 2-2 draw at Leicester. Two goals down inside the first 10 minutes, Phillips’ 76th minute thunderbolt provided Saints with fresh inspiration and James Beattie levelled shortly after.

The Frenchman was introduced as a late sub against Blackburn at St Mary’s in October 2003, and curled home Saints’ second goal in a 2-0 victory.

Harry Redknapp’s January transfer window loan signing from Wolves struck on his debut, after being introduced as a half-time sub, but Saints still went down 2-1 at Birmingham City in early February 2005.

Just three minutes after coming on for his debut, following a £750,000 summer move from Glasgow Rangers, the Northern Ireland international midfielder netted at Manchester City. Saints led 2-1 but lost 3-2 to the reigning champions.

Introduced as a second half sub at Old Trafford, Saints’ new £4m signing headed his side’s 87tj minute winner from a James Ward-Prowse corner in January 2016.

Celebrated his Saints debut, following an £11m summer move from Norwich, with the leveller in a 1-1 opening day draw with Watford.

The £14m deadline day signing hammered a left-footed shot off the crossbar and in from a tight angle to give Saints an early lead against West Ham last weekend.

Wayne Rooney wage and other highest paid Premier League players revealed

Show/hide article…

Man United striker Wayne Rooney is the highest paid player at the club, according to figures compiled by The Times.

It’s impressive work and probably means he doesn’t spend time poking around the reduced section when shopping, although he should because there’re plenty of bargains to be had.

To see the other top earners at Premier League clubs scroll through the gallery above – the Chelsea player might surprise you.

Premier League top earners: Who is your club’s highest paid player?

Show/hide article…

With relegation to the Championship looming large for three top flight clubs, the wages of your star men can be concerning for those in charge.

With that in mind, it may come as a surprise to hear that three Premier League clubs towards the bottom of the table are paying upwards of £100,000-a-week to their top player.

Here, Sportsmail takes a look at who’s paid what at each of the 20 Premier League clubs…

The highest-paid player in the Premier League is Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney - his £300,000-a-week wage being collected as he warms the Old Trafford bench.

The club’s all-time top goalscorer is, of course, a loyal servant and the captain, but that has not stopped Jose Mourinho relegating Rooney to the bench this season.

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic favoured in a lone striker role, Rooney has had to make do with a bit-part role, coming off the bench for nine of his last 12 appearances.

According to the Times’ figures, one of the most surprising revelations is the wage of Crystal Palace’s Christian Benteke, who is being paid an eye-watering £120,000-a-week to help the club stay in the Premier League.

Admittedly, relegation was not expected at the start of the season but Benteke’s nine-goal haul in the league this term has not been enough to take Palace any higher than 19th in the table.

If they are to avoid the drop, he will be pivotal… but his wages are surely not viable in the second tier of English football.

Middlesbrough and Leicester are also guilty of paying large wages to their star men, as Alvaro Negredo and Jamie Vardy take home £100,000-a-week respectively.

That makes them joint-eighth in the weekly wages ranking, but their actual Premier League rankings of 15th and 16th are considerably more concerning.

Hull, who have hauled themselves out of the bottom three under Marco Silva despite an awful run of form going into 2017, have done so despite only paying a top wage of £35,000-a-week.

Abel Hernandez is the man who takes that, and if the Tigers are to avoid relegation it will be ever more impressive given their meagre wage structure.

Burnley are another side who have done well to keep the wages down, despite breaking their club-record transfer fee in January.

They signed Robbie Brady and have been paying him £35,000-a-week, which is worth every penny given their position in the table. They are 12th and likely to be staying in the top flight beyond the summer.

As you would expect, it is the Champions League-chasing clubs who are shelling out the most for their star names.

Behind Manchester United in first, Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool make up the rest of the top four in the rankings - paying the most money to Sergio Aguero, Cesc Fabregas and Philippe Coutinho.

Fleming excited for next batch of young talent

Show/hide article…

The Saints youngsters travel to Fulham in league action as usual on Saturday, but manager Fleming admits that the group of players and focus will alter slightly from here on in.

“It’s a changing of the guard now, really,” he explained.

“The younger boys will come in and play the vast majority, as well as looking to blood a few of the Under-16s in preparation for next year. That’ll be the theme until the end of the season.

“But I imagine Fulham will be quite similar to what we faced at the start of the season. They are a decent and physical side, so it will be a tough game for our boys.”

Away from club football, a large number of Fleming’s men have also received international recognition throughout this campaign.

Jake Vokins, Christoph Klarer and Thomas O’Connor are all out on international duty this month – an achievement that Fleming believes highlights the group’s development.

“It’s been a very good year on that front,” he continued.

“We’ve had a lot of lads that have been away from the international scene and have forced their way back in, as well as lads getting fresh call-ups.

“So it’s been fantastic for the boys. Ultimately that’s what we want at the club: players that are getting recognised and can push on to come through the ranks.”

Puel: Sunderland our only priority

Show/hide article…

Saints visit the Black Cats for a Premier League clash, in what is their final fixture before they head to Wembley Stadium later in the month.

While the upcoming final will represent a huge moment for the club, Puel’s focus is only on securing three points this weekend and starting to climb back up the table.

"The final is a long way away,” he said. “We have time to prepare for this game.

“The priority is this game against Sunderland, and just this. After this, we will have 15 days to prepare for the final, and that is a long time.

“The priority now is Sunderland and focusing on this team. They are in confidence at the moment, but the most important is to have good concentration and also to have many chances to score.”

With Saints having lost six of their past seven Premier League games, Puel added: "Of course, it’s important to win this game. A good result at the end is very important.

“We have had many losses and it’s important to have a good reaction and a good answer. We have trained very well this week. I know we are going to make a good game, with a good attitude and good play.”

Saints minds “subconsciously” on Wembley says Bertrand

Show/hide article…

RYAN Bertrand believes “subconsciously” Saints are focusing more on the League Cup final than the Premier League.

Saints are aiming to lift their first major silverware in 41 years against Manchester United in the final at Wembley on February 26, writes Peter Howard.

Despite losing six of their last seven Premier League games, Bertrand revealed the squad are still highly excited about the chance of winning a trophy.

“Subconsciously everyone is focusing on that (the League Cup) a little bit more than the main league,” he said. “The excitement has never dropped really. We’re more than looking forward to it.”

However, the 27-year-old admitted it would be “lovely” to head to Wembley off the back of a top-flight victory at Sunderland tomorrow.

“Wins change training grounds. They become a much happier place,” he said.

“It would lovely to build in to the final with a win under our belts with full confidence looking forward.”

The left-back doesn’t believe that the result of the Black Cats game will have any bearing on the mood in the Saints camp ahead of the final.

“It’s a massive game because it’s in the Premier League and we want to win, not necessarily because we want the team spirit to be up before the final,” he said.

“Going into this final it’s going to be the biggest game the club have had in a long time and the boys will be more than up for it.

“There will be no need to add to any confidence or whatever.”

David Moyes’ side, despite being bottom of the Premier League, are buoyant after a 4-0 victory at Crystal Palace last time out.

Bertrand expects Sunderland to be full of confidence and ready to “fight for their lives”.

“You think they’ve had a good result while they’re fighting for their lives,” he said. “It will be a big game at home for them.

“They will be full of confidence… as confident as you can be in their predicament.

“We just need to go there and focus on us and getting it right.

“We have to be prepared for them. They will come out fighting for their lives.

“We need the points at the moment too.”

Bertrand has also hailed the arrival of £14.5m striker Manolo Gabbiadini.

The England international hopes that the January transfer deadline day signing from Napoli will build on his sizzling debut goal in the 3-1 defeat to West Ham last weekend.

“It’s been massive to bring that quality into the squad,” he said. “It lifts everyone’s game. It shows the direction the club want to go in and hopefully he can come in and continue.

“A few more finishes like that would be nice.”
