Burnley v Southampton

Show/hide article…

Burnley’s Scott Arfield and Johann Berg Gudmundsson are unlikely to play because of hamstring injuries suffered in the FA Cup last weekend.

But George Boyd and Jon Flanagan are set to return after minor problems, with Ashley Barnes also fit again.

Southampton’s Steven Davis faces a fitness test after coming off with a knock against Liverpool in midweek.

Saints have no other injury worries but Jose Fonte is still absent after making a transfer request.

Steve Wilson: "Only Spurs and Chelsea have won more Premier League home games this season than Burnley, which should be both a source of pride to everyone at Turf Moor and a reason to fret for Southampton.

"Sean Dyche’s side have been magnificent in front of their own fans - which is just as well given that they have earned only one point away from home.

"Southampton’s mood should be considerably improved by the dominant win over Liverpool in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final - the only shame was the lack of goals, a recurring trait for a team averaging fewer than one per game in league football.

“One of Saints’ former Burnley strikers, Jay Rodriguez, will hope to put that right; the other, Charlie Austin, will miss out through injury.”

Burnley manager Sean Dyche: "The depth and the competition within the squad is good. There’s a healthy respect, and a healthy challenge within the group.

“We pick 11 but I make it clear to the lads who aren’t in that we still respect everything they are doing, and I think that was on show with a decent performance last week from some individuals up at Sunderland.”

Southampton manager Claude Puel: "I hope we can play this game with the same levels, the same attitude and concentration [as we had in the midweek win over Liverpool].

"We can see a good game, a strong game together in defence, and now it’s important to keep this regularity.

“All the good things against Liverpool, it’s now important to stay with a good focus about our game against Burnley.”

Burnley are a top-five team based on their results at Turf Moor so, weighing all of that up, this might seem like a home banker.

But you cannot expect the Clarets to win every home game they play, which is why I throw in a draw for them every now and again.

Cédric: We are all feeling positive

Show/hide article…

The right-back, who helped Saints to a 1-0 victory in the first leg at St Mary’s on Wednesday night, says focus must now solely be on the trip to Burnley this weekend.

Saints have three games, two in the Premier League and one in the Emirates FA Cup, before they head to Anfield for the decisive second leg on Wednesday 25th January.

“It was a great performance against Liverpool and it was very important for the team, because we were not in the best moment,” said Cédric.

“We needed a win, definitely, and it was a great job from everyone. This team deserved it, so I am happy that we had a great game.

“I think we are in the right way now. We just need to keep it going, keep working all together. It’s all about the mentality that we have for every game.

“If we think always like this, and have a very strong mind like before Liverpool, we can have some very good results before the next game.”

Having struggled since Christmas, the victory will have done wonders for confidence, says the Portuguese international.

“We needed a win. When you win against a strong team like Liverpool you get the confidence back,” added Cédric.

“Now it’s much easier to prepare for all of the games, because everyone is much more positive.”

Jan Molby reveals player he thinks Liverpool should sign

Show/hide article…

The Kop legend has called on Jurgen Klopp to sign the Southampton star who he thinks “every club in the world would want”. Molby told the Liverpool Echo: “He has it all. He’s a good reader of the game, he can defend when he has to, he’s good in the air, he’s a real asset in both penalty areas but I also like his passing ability, not just the fact he’s comfortable with the ball but the things that he sees and he’s capable of executing those passes. “There’s a real shortage of centre-halves generally throughout the game and by that I mean people who have a little bit of everything.

“He has a lot of everything and he has to be of interest to any top club in Europe. “Very rarely do you get a player like him who is so suited to all six top clubs in England. “If you look at how they play they could all do with a Virgil van Dijk and they will all be interested. “And he will leave. I’m not sure he will leave in January, I think he’ll leave in the summer.

“And Liverpool should very much show an interest. “For all that’s we’re happy with what we’ve got, he’s an improvement and he’d be an improvement for all top six clubs. “Southampton didn’t pay a huge amount for him, and credit to Ronald Koeman for that, but he’s improved since and I think he has the temperament and the ability to improve as he steps up.”

Burnley v Southampton: Team news, kick-off time, and probable line-ups

Show/hide article…

Ahead of the weekend Premier League action, Sportsmail will be providing you with all you need to know about every fixture, with team news, provisional squads, betting odds and Opta stats. Here is all the information you need for Southampton’s trip to Turf Moor to play Burnley.

Scott Arfield and Johann Berg Gudmundsson are unlikely to feature for Burnley against Southampton.

The wide men suffered hamstring injuries in the FA Cup draw with Sunderland last weekend so George Boyd is set to be recalled and boss Sean Dyche could consider utilising Jeff Hendrick or Michael Kightly on the other flank.

Goalkeeper Tom Heaton and defender Ben Mee are likely to return but Joey Barton, who played 90 minutes in his second debut last weekend, may have to revert to the bench.

Southampton will check on the fitness of midfielder Steven Davis ahead of the Premier League trip to Burnley.

Davis went off during the closing stages of the midweek EFL Cup victory over Liverpool at St Mary’s, so will be assessed, but captain Jose Fonte will continue to be left out of the squad after handing in a transfer request, while midfielder Sofiane Boufal has returned from African Nations Cup duty because of a knee injury.

Forward Charlie Austin (shoulder), defender Matt Targett (hamstring), goalkeeper Alex McCarthy (hamstring) and full-back Jeremy Pied (knee) all continue their recovery.

Burnley have lost two of their previous three Premier League games against Southampton, but did win the other at Turf Moor in December 2014 thanks to a goal from Ashley Barnes.

Southampton haven’t won any of their last three league visits to Burnley, last beating them there in the Championship in October 2007.

The Clarets last failed to score at home in the league against Southampton in March 1971, a run of nine games.

Charlie Austin scored two of Southampton’s three goals against Burnley in October, but will miss this game due to injury.

Southampton have lost the most points when leading in the Premier League this season (14) but Burnley are the only side yet to gain a point when trailing.

Saints have lost three consecutive Premier League games for the first time since December 2014 when managed by Ronald Koeman (run of four defeats).

Burnley have won 22 of their 23 points in the Premier League this season at Turf Moor (96%).

In fact, this is a higher percentage of points won at home than any other team in the Premier League or Football League, ahead of Rotherham (Championship) – 92%.

Andre Gray (five goals) is the second lowest scoring player, after Fredi Bobic (four goals), to have scored a hat-trick in the Premier League.

Despite their defeat to Manchester City last time out, this remains Burnley’s best ever start to a Premier League season after 20 games (23 points).

Davis to be assessed ahead of Burnley

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel says a late assessment will be made on the fitness of Steven Davis ahead of the trip to Burnley in the Premier League.

Davis was replaced by James Ward-Prowse in the 82nd minute of the EFL Cup victory over Liverpool on Wednesday with a knock.

Dutch midfielder Jordy Clasie was also withdrawn but Puel has confirmed that he will be fit for the weekend.

Puel said: “There is no problem with Jordy. He was just a little tired because it was a strong game for him and for the team.

“But we have no injury, apart from Charlie Austin, Alex McCarthy, Jake Hesketh, Matt Targett and Sofiane Boufal.

“We will see tomorrow with Steven Davis but after that everyone is ok.”

Puel also confirmed that José Fonte will continue to sit out, while his future waits to be resolved.

Premier League Predictions: Man United thrash Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal win

Danny Mills says players no longer “bear a resemblance” to supporters

Arsenal stars try their hand at darts

The last three clashes between these two sides have ended in 1-1 draws but that trend doesn’t look set to continue this weekend.

Tottenham have won their last five top-flight games, including their stunning 2-0 victory over league leaders Chelsea last time out.

While West Brom are going well, Spurs’ vibrant and free-flowing football will prove too hot for the Baggies to handle.

Spurs are yet to be beaten at White Hart Lane this term and with Dele Alli in irresistible form, Mauricio Pochettino’s men should enjoy another successful afternoon tomorrow.

Southampton are in desperate need of a win at Turf Moor tomorrow but head into their clash with Burnley off the back of three-straight defeats.

The Saints also expelled an awful lot of energy in their EFL Cup semi-final win over Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Their midweek excursions will mean their poor league form will continue this weekend.

While terrible on the road, Burnley have made their home a fortress this season and will claim another priceless three points against Southampton.

Gray can punish Saints to offer FPL value

Show/hide article…

A visit from Southampton gives Burnley’s Andre Gray (£6.2m) the chance to maintain a string of impressive home performances.

The forward has served up four goals, an assist and five bonus points over his previous three appearances at Turf Moor, yet is owned by a mere 4.7% of Fantasy Premier League managers.

With one goal and one assist in the opening 14 rounds of fixtures, Gray’s recent renaissance has earned him over 37,000 transfers this Gameweek.

Assessed against his early-season displays, the underlying statistics signal a clear progression over the last six Gameweeks, as the table above shows.

A total of 33 FPL points during that period brings an average of 5.5, a considerable step up from his 2.75 points average before.

Compared with other FPL forwards from Gameweek 15 onwards, Gray’s four goals is on a par with Everton’s Romelu Lukaku (£9.5m) and bettered only by the five of Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic (£11.6m).

The striker is also ranked third for shots on target (seven), behind Ibrahimovic and Lukaku, with 11 and eight respectively.

Having started five successive Premier League matches, a confident Gray could be set to profit against a Southampton defence who have conceded ten goals in the last four Gameweeks.

The upcoming schedule suggests there is further reason for optimism for Sean Dyche’s side.

According to the Fixture Difficulty Rankings, matches against Leicester City, Watford and Hull City score no more than two, handing Gray the prospect of continued returns to offer FPL managers a new cut-price option in attack.
