Premier League clubs ranked by goals conceded: Middlesbrough aren’t rubbish!

Show/hide article…

Here’s something for Boro fans to cheer about and it’s that their club are better than some of the more established Premier League sides. In terms of the defence anyway.

It has been a miserable season for the club and they look like going down along with Sunderland. If only their strikers were able to score goals then it could have been avoided. Even a change of manager hasn’t changed much.

Here, talkSPORT looks at the ‘goals against’ column in the Premier League table to see how each club has fared.

The Inside Track: Manchester City

Show/hide article…

What have you made of Manchester City’s season so far?

I think City’s season has been a relative disappointment, really. I think when Pep Guardiola came in there was an expectation that City would be challenging for the title. That’s not to say they aren’t at the moment, but Pep has even admitted himself that it is gone.

He’s said in a couple of press conferences that he has met the owners already and they are happy but there will be this review at the end of the season. So the number one goal for Manchester City now has to be Champions League qualification.

What about the FA Cup?

There will be the question when Manchester City play Arsenal in the semi-final to see the emphasis that is put on that compared to going for Champions League football and making sure Man City finish there again this season.

If I am right in saying, I don’t think Pep Guardiola has managed at a club and not won a trophy in his first season, so for him winning the FA Cup is a big thing. So a successful season, from now, for would be an FA Cup win and fourth or higher in the Premier League.

What sort of team can we expect Guardiola to put out?

He’s the only manager that hasn’t named an unchanged side this season. Most clubs have a stable goalkeeper but Manchester City haven’t even got have that! So that makes predicting it really hard.

The only thing I can say is that there will be absolutely no question of Agüero starting. The link-up play that Sané, Sterling and Agüero have is absolutely incredible. I would say they make up the most dangerous strike force I have seen in the Premier League for Manchester City.

What have you made of Southampton’s season from the outside?

I have always been a bit confused by Southampton this season, if I am honest. They have the ability to really turn it on; reaching a league cup final is no easy feat. To do that, in the manner that they did, to go to Anfield and grab that late winner through Shane Long, was incredible.

But then again you see them in other games and they are a bit of a disappointment. One thing I will say is that Southampton have always managed to find the right manager. I wouldn’t necessarily say that Claude Puel has stamped his Southampton authority yet, but that may come in time and he will also have the record that he took Southampton to the brink of their first trophy win in some time.

A score prediction for Saturday?

I think it’s one of the hardest ones to call because both teams have been so inconsistent this season. The Manchester City fan in me wants to say 2-1 to City, but the realistic football fan would probably go with a 2-2 draw. Both teams play attacking and nice football which I think can leave them open at times, so an exciting 2-2 draw. But I think if one team can win it, I do think it’s Manchester City.

Goals galore! Which Premier League side has been involved in the most matches where each side has scored?

Show/hide article…

There are always plenty of goals in Premier League matches and, more often than not, you can rely on both teams scoring.

It’s become such a common occurrence that many football fans every weekend will bet on games to have this outcome.

But, which clubs in England’s top-flight are more likely to be involved in games where both sides hit the back of the net?

Opposition View: Guardiola on Saints

Show/hide article…

Saints earned a 1-1 draw against the Citizens in the reverse fixture at the Etihad back in October, and Guardiola admitted to being impressed with what he saw that day.

“Southampton are having an exceptional season,” said the Man City boss during his pre-match press conference.

“They have a good manager and players in all positions. They have very good midfielders, the strikers are so fast, the wingers can play inside, all of them good quality.

“I was impressed when they came here in what was a busy time for us. It will be a really good test.”

Guardiola will have to make do without Ilkay Gundogan (knee) and Gabriel Jesus (foot) for Saturday’s tie, whilst defender Bacary Sagna is also likely to miss out due to an adductor injury.

Though the Spanish manager did reveal that captain Vincent Kompany was fully fit again after overcoming a minor reaction following the defeat to Chelsea.

“After the game against Chelsea he had a little problem in his legs,” continued Guardiola.

“And we didn’t want to take the risk, but of course the good news is that he was able to play 90 minutes in a tough game and at a high level.

“Sagna and Jesus are much better but aren’t ready yet. Everyone else is OK for Southampton.”

We believe in our quality, says Tadić

Show/hide article…

Saints go in search of a third straight victory after successes against Crystal Palace and, most recently, West Bromwich Albion.

And the diminutive playmaker says there is no reason why they can’t do just that against Pep Guardiola’s men.

“It’s a very important game for us. We’re in a good moment and they have a very good team, a good coach and how they play is very good,” Tadić said.

“But we believe in our skills, our qualities and we hope everything will be fine.

“When you win games and you get points, we get extra confidence and we’re happy we’re in a good moment but that’s it and we will see what happens.”

Puel: We’ve got nothing to lose

Show/hide article…

Saints are out to record a third straight win and make it three without defeat against the Citizens – something they have only done on two previous occasions, in January 1996 and May 2003.

“Our last two results gives confidence to the squad. We will see in this game, it’s an important game against a creative opponent,” Puel said

“We do not have something to lose. We can just try to play good football and go up against them.

“We know about all their qualities and talent. It’s important to think about our play and our game, because we have confidence and a good relationship between our players.”

Stat Pack: Saints vs Manchester City

Show/hide article…

Southampton have picked up just one win from their last seven games against the Blues in the Premier League (D2 L4), although that did come in this fixture last season (4-2).

The Citizens last failed to score in a game against Southampton back in October 2004, having netted in all 11 meetings in all competitions since.

Saints are unbeaten in their last two Premier League meetings with City (W1 D1), while they have only twice previously gone three without defeat against them in the competition (January 1996 and May 2003).

Against teams he has faced at least twice in the Premier League, only against Everton (312) does Sergio Aguero have a worse mins/goal ratio than he does against Southampton (264).

Sergio Agüero has scored in 11 successive Premier League appearances in the month of April (14 goals). He’s scored in all three Premier League games in April 2017 so far and is currently on a run of scoring in four successive league appearances overall.

Should Manchester City win this match, they’ll equal their total number of Premier League wins in 2015-16 under Manuel Pellegrini (19).

Dušan Tadić has had a hand in five goals in his last six Premier League appearances (one goal, four assists).

David Silva has assisted the most goals (63) and created the most goalscoring chances (598) in the Premier League since he arrived at Manchester City in July 2010.

Fraser Forster has kept a clean sheet in 30 of his 78 Premier League appearances (38.5%).

Since he made his debut in August 2014, of the 18 goalkeepers to have played 50 Premier League games since then, only Petr Cech (41.2%) and Joe Hart (40.8%) have a higher ratio than this.

Following Andrea Ranocchia’s goal for Hull City on MD32, Manchester City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo has conceded from each of the last seven shots on target he’s faced in the Premier League. Since December 31st 2016, Bravo has conceded from nine of the 10 shots on target he’s faced.

Southampton vs Manchester City team news: Squads revealed, injuries and more

Show/hide article…

The returns of Manolo Gabbiadini and Steven Davis mean Southampton have a near fully-fit squad for Saturday’s Premier League visit of Manchester City .

Manager Claude Puel is yet to decide whether either will start, but their presence in his squad leaves Charlie Austin - close to returning from an injured shoulder - and Virgil van Dijk, who has an injured foot, as his only major absentees.

Beyond those two, only Matt Targett and Alex McCarthy are unavailable due to to hamstring injuries.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is still to decide whether Claudio Bravo or Willy Caballero will play in goal in Saturday’s Premier League clash at Southampton.

Striker Gabriel Jesus (foot) and right-back Bacary Sagna (groin) remain on the sidelines but could be back before the end of the month.

Captain and defender Vincent Kompany is in contention after not being risked against Hull last weekend, but midfielder Ilkay Gundogan (knee) is a long-term absentee.
