Virgil van Dijk has regained confidence at Southampton, says Maya Yoshida

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk has regained confidence at Southampton, says Maya Yoshida

Maya Yoshida says Southampton team-mate Virgil van Dijk has regained confidence since returning to the first team.

Van Dijk was missing from the team earlier in the season due to a combination of injury and a desire to force through a move away from St Mary’s, with the Netherlands international handing in a transfer request in August.

Yoshida also says Southampton’s poor recent form - in which they have won two points from an available 15 in the Premier League - has come as a surprise to Mauricio Pellegrino’s side.

Mathias Jorgensen: ‘Amazing Huddersfield fans can have a drink on me’

Show/hide article…

Defender Mathias Jorgensen has offered to buy every Huddersfield Town fan who travels away to Southampton on Saturday a Christmas drink as thanks for their “amazing” support this season.

The gesture could cost the Denmark international more than £8,000.

The Terriers have a 472-mile round trip to Southampton as they look to build on last weekend’s 4-1 victory at Watford.

Jorgensen, 27, who is known as Zanka, wrote on Twitter: “I hope you like the gift. Zanka Claus is coming to Town!”

In a video message, he added: “Your support this year has been truly amazing, so I thought I would think up something special for those of you travelling to Southampton this weekend.”

The club said away fans will be presented with a voucher when they enter St Mary’s Stadium for the Southampton game, and can redeem for a drink at Huddersfield’s next home match on Boxing Day against Stoke.

They have been given an allocation of 2,596 for the match at St Mary’s, which is a 472-mile round trip for fans.

Huddersfield charge around £3.20 for a pint of beer - and if they sell out at Southampton and all of the fans take up the free drink offer, it would cost Jorgensen £8,300.

The club are playing in the top flight this season for the first time since 1971-72 after winning the Championship play-off final in May and are in 11th place.

Which January transfers will happen in the Premier League? We check the odds…

Supporters will be hoping their team makes a big, season-changing signing this January - but who could be on the move in the Premier League during the transfer window?

Clubs will be free to sign players throughout the month until Deadline Day on January 31.

Here, we look at which Premier League transfers are most likely to happen this January according to Sky Bet’s odds…

After a summer of transfer speculation, it all begins again for Alexis Sanchez this January with even less time running on the Chilean’s contract at Arsenal. He was odds-on to move for much of the previous transfer window as Arsenal resisted Manchester City’s advances, but will they say no again in what is seemingly their final chance to cash in before he could become a free agent this summer? City are 11/10 to secure his services, with PSG 10/1 to gatecrash the potential deal.

Most likely destination: Joins Man City (11/10 with Sky Bet)

If Arsenal are to lose their prized asset then they are expected to be on the hunt for a replacement and Riyad Mahrez is considered their most likely target. With six goals in his last 13 games, the Algerian has shown the sort of form which helped Leicester defy all odds to win the title, and he is currently just 6/5 to leave the King Power Stadium. Chelsea (9/1) and Tottenham (10/1) are also considered potential suitors, but it is the Gunners who are thought to be in pole position.

Most likely destination: Joins Arsenal (5/2 with Sky Bet)

It has been another frustrating campaign for Daniel Sturridge and it now seems not only fitness is preventing him from making Liverpool’s line-up but competition for places, too. The England forward has made just two Premier League starts to 10 substitute appearances this season. With Dominic Solanke seemingly nudging ahead in the pecking order for both club and country, Sturridge is only marginally odds-on to remain at Anfield, with Newcastle his most likely suitors.

Most likely destination: Newcastle (6/4 with Sky Bet)

It has been a somewhat similar situation this season for Danny Rose, who has struggled to regain his starting berth since returning from a long-term knee problem. After irking Tottenham with pre-season suggestions of discontent, the left-back was reportedly “furious” to have been left out of the squad for the north London derby, with Ben Davies preferred for key clashes more often than not this season. Manchester United have lacked such fierce competition on the left side of their backline and are odds-on to secure his services, with little competition in the market.

Most likely destination: Man Utd (8/11 with Sky Bet)

If Spurs do sell another full-back to a Manchester club then, like with the acquisition of Serge Aurier to cover Kyle Walker’s departure in the summer, they will be expected to move for another replacement. Luke Shaw would seem to be a suitable makeweight in a potential deal to see Rose move to Old Trafford, especially given his positive relationship with Mauricio Pochettino from their time together at Southampton. However, Spurs have also been backed to sign Fulham youngster Ryan Sessegnon, with that deal given a 5/2 chance.

Most likely destination: Tottenham (5/4 with Sky Bet)

After successive serious knee problems, Danny Ings’ injury woes seem to be behind him, but a first start of the season still eludes the striker. With three substitute roles representing his campaign to date, various clubs have been linked with securing his services. West Brom are favourites as Alan Pardew looks to boost his new side’s attacking threat, while Southampton and Newcastle are also single-figure odds.

Most likely destination: West Brom (5/2 with Sky Bet)

Manchester City have been close to perfect this season but if there was to be one concern about their squad then it would be defensive depth. With Vincent Kompany struggling to stay fit for sustained periods, John Stones’ injury has left Pep Guardiola relying on Nicolas Otamendi and Equiliam Mangala, sufficient so far for the Premier League but potentially problematic as they seek success on four fronts. Jonny Evans was linked with the club in the summer and is once again thought to be their top target, while Arsenal’s backing into 4/1 for the former Manchester United player suggests they may be pressed to make their move.

Most likely destination: Man City (3/1 with Sky Bet)

Sam Allardyce has offered little insight into Ross Barkley’s future and the odds currently paint a similarly blurry picture. The attacking midfielder is marginally odds-on to leave Goodison Park at 10/11 but there is little between Chelsea (5/2) and Tottenham (3/1) in betting on his next club. His chances of playing for England this summer are even longer at 5/1 to make the World Cup squad.

Most likely destination: Chelsea (5/2 with Sky Bet)

Arsenal seemingly have the chance to add a powerful midfielder to their ranks with former Stoke and Blackburn midfielder Steven N’Zonzi expected to leave Sevilla. The 29-year-old has not played for the Andalusian club since being withdrawn at half-time during their stunning 3-3 comeback against Liverpool last month, and is 2/1 to still be at the club come the close of the January window. The Gunners reportedly lead the race to secure his services, while Allardyce, who initially brought the Frenchman to the Premier League, is 4/1 to land him for Everton.

Most likely destination: Arsenal (evens with Sky Bet)

The Liverpool midfielder’s contract is due to expire in the summer. The 24-year-old can sign a pre-contract with a European club from January, providing his agent with plenty of bargaining chips to take to the Anfield hierarchy. Juventus are the 9/4 favourites to secure his services if the Reds decide to cash in now, but he is odds-on to remain on Merseyside until the end of the season at least.

Most likely destination: Juventus (9/4 with Sky Bet)

One move which could prompt Liverpool to raise funds is the purchase of Virgil van Dijk. Having sold a string of their stars to the Reds over recent years, Southampton maintained a stubborn stance over their star defender in January, asking the Premier League to probe Liverpool’s pursuit of the player. However, the Saints look set to face another tough task with Manchester City also thought to be interested at 11/4 to land the Dutchman, who would also be eligible for Champions League registration.

Most likely destination: Liverpool (5/2 with Sky Bet)
