Southampton coach Eric Black resigns due to back injury

Show/hide article…

Eric Black has resigned from his position as senior first-team coach at Southampton for personal reasons.

The club said the 54-year-old Scot had been suffering the effects of back injuries sustained during his playing career, and confirmed he would now take a break from the game.

The club’s vice-chairman of football Les Reed said: 'Eric Black is a fine coach and a true professional who is popular with the players and staff and always gave 100 per cent to his job.

'Fortunately, his situation is not serious and we hope he will be back in a tracksuit at some point in the future.

‘Everyone at Southampton wishes him a speedy recovery. I would also personally like to thank him for his diligent work during his time with the club.’

Black joined Saints in the summer of 2016 following the appointment of then boss Claude Puel. He was the subject of a Daily Telegraph undercover story in September of that year but was cleared by his club of any wrongdoing.

Mathias Jorgensen will buy a Christmas drink for every Huddersfield fan who makes the 472-mile round trip to Southampton.

Jorgensen, more widely known by his nickname Zanka, has made the festive gesture to thank supporters for their consistent support of the Terriers.

The 27-year-old defender took to Twitter this week to record a special message for fans, informing them he wanted to do something special to reflect his appreciation.

Filming a short clip from his car, Jorgensen said: “Your support this year has been truly amazing therefore I thought I would think up something special for those of you travelling to Southampton on Saturday, I hope you like the gift, Zanka Claus out.”

Following up his cryptic message, Jorgensen further informed fans: “Use these tokens at the Stoke game on Boxing Day. Your support has been amazing so this round is on me.”

The Denmark international joined the Terriers from Copenhagen in July and has since helped the West Yorkshire club reach 11th place in the Premier League.

Jorgensen’s generous gift could be set to cost him upwards of £8,000, as Huddersfield supporters have an allocation of 2,596 for Saturday’ fixture at St Mary’s.

Pep Guardiola plotting mega triple transfer raid: Busquets, Van Dijk and Sanchez wanted

Show/hide article…

Guardiola has targeted Alexis Sanchez, Virgil Van Dijk and Sergio Busquets as he looks to make City the dominant force in European football. Guardiola has met with Etihad bosses to discuss his plans and given them the list of targets he wants. He told them he wanted a new striker, centre back and defensive midfielder to replace Yay Toure, who will be leaving the club in June. The Spanish boss has been interested in signing Sanchez since replacing Manuel Pellegrini as boss in 2016.

“Pep Guardiola wants Van Dijk, Sanchez and Busquets at Man City” He came close to landing the Arsenal superstar in the summer, but the deal fell through at the last minute when the Gunners failed to get a replacement in. But Sanchez is now running down his contract at the Emirates with a view to joining City at the end of the season. It is understood Sanchez has made it clear to Etihad bosses he wants to join them and personal terms have already been agreed in principle. City are willing to hand the Chile ace a mega deal worth more than £60m over five seasons.

Starsport understands Guardiola is in no rush to sign Sanchez in next month’s transfer window because he doesn’t want to risk upsetting the balance of a team that is storming to the title and sweeping all before them. Guardiola has also set his sights on luring unsettled Southampton ace Van Dijk to the Etihad. The Holland international wanted to join Liverpool in the summer, but the move collapsed amid huge acrimony and embarrassment. The Reds were forced to apologise after admitting making an illegal approach and despite the fact Van Dijk handed in a transfer request, he was forced to remain with the Saints.

Man City map out transfer plans for next 18 months, with Alexis Sanchez and Virgil van Dijk on wishlist

Show/hide article…

Manchester City have already carefully mapped out their transfer plans for the next 18 months and have prioritised signing a top class defensive midfielder and centre-half as well as Arsenal striker Alexis Sanchez as they target serial success under Pep Guardiola.

City will only move for Sanchez in next month’s transfer window unless circumstances absolutely demand it and prefer instead to wait until the summer to sign the Chilean, with Guardiola worried about unsettling the attacking balance in his team and dressing room harmony in pursuit of the Premier League title.

There are thought to be particular concerns about how Argentina striker Sergio Aguero would react if Sanchez arrived in mid-season and, beyond that and the wider harmony of the group, Guardiola believes the form of his front players, especially Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane, has reduced the need for an imminent move for the Arsenal forward. City are currently 11 points clear at the top of the table.

Txiki Begiristain, City’s director of football, held a planning meeting with chief executive Ferran Soriano and chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak last Friday (Dec 15), at which they ironed out their transfer strategy for the next 18 months. City are refusing to entertain any quick four or five month fixes and are determined to ensure they guard against a repeat of a situation such as last summer, when they lost four full-backs in one go.

Pep Guardiola has finalised Manchester City’s transfer plans

Show/hide article…

Manchester City’s main transfer target this January will be a centre-half, with Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk currently the top option, although the club also want to sign a number-six and a forward - still likely Alexis Sanchez - over the next six months.

Both Pep Guardiola and director of football Txiki Begiristain met with chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak when the latter flew in at the weekend, sitting ahead of the 4-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur to talk about the next 18 months of planning.

While their ongoing interest in Sanchez was discussed, it is understood that Guardiola is now no longer so intent on signing the Chilean this season, as he is content with the chemistry and integration of his attack.

While he is mindful of the opportunity to win four trophies and the possibility to push for that by signing the Chilean, he is also wary of potentially disrupting that harmony with such a signing. City similarly feel they can afford to wait a bit longer on Sanchez and that he would still come to the Etihad when his contract is up at the end of the season, although any possible change on that could still see their stance move.

Paris Saint-Germain have an interest in the striker, too, and that could yet force their hand. City also want another number-six to complement Fernandinho, especially as Yaya Toure’s own contract runs out in the summer, and he is set to leave. The club also expect Sergio Aguero to stay.

The profile of the squad does mean that there won’t be the same high expenditure as in the summer of 2017 over the next two windows, but Guardiola does want to bring in another central defender next month, due to the problems that have arisen when one is injured.

Van Dijk is the top target, and it is understood Southampton might be willing to do business, with the City hierarchy highly mindful of the problems that arose with Liverpool’s very public interest with the Dutch centre-half in the summer.

Guardiola is also conscious of the partnership that Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones have struck up, too, although any decision will be based on what suits the club’s medium-term future rather than immediate concerns. If they cannot get Van Dijk, Real Sociedad’s Inigo Martinez and West Brom’s Jonny Evans are options.
