Inside Track: Manchester United

Show/hide articleā€¦

Joint top of the Premier League with 16 goals scored in five games. Have you been surprised by how well United have started the new season?

I havenā€™t overly been surprised as Jose Mourinhoā€™s first season was a slow burner but ended up with the EFL Cup (sorry to remind you of that) and the Europa League. The foundations had been built and two positions identified as being needed to be filled. Filling them is one thing but hitting the ground running with them was another and that was probably the biggest worry. But the squad spirit appears to be really sound and upbeat and that has been a major plus.

What difference have the summer signings made, and who have been the standout performers so far?

Losing influential figures like Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimović put a lot on the shoulders of Romelu Lukaku but duck to water comes to mind. The Belgian has embraced the pressure with six goals. You cannot ask for much more. Heā€™s given United a big, powerful and potent spearhead. Nemanja Matić has been impressive as a steadying, anchor man. He has given the Reds a calm stability to enable the defence to feel more secure and the attack the freedom to break at speed.

What impact do you see the loss of Paul Pogba having on the team?

Pogba was beginning to have a major say on how United played and was looking the part, but Mourinho has last seasonā€™s Fansā€™ Player of the Year and man of the match in the Europa League final against Ajax, and someone who interested Barcelona in the summer, Ander Herrera, to come in. It wonā€™t weaken the team.

How important were last seasonā€™s EFL Cup and Europa League triumphs in laying the foundations for Jose Mourinho?

Vital. Any manager at any club needs a silverware base to breed confidence and ensure the backing of the support. To establish that winning mentality quickly meant everyone bought into the Mourinho way. A serial winner and he proved it. Obviously the targets this season will be upgraded.

Whatā€™s he changed about the style of play from what you saw under Louis Van Gaal?

Van Gaalā€™s style was disappointingly uneasy on the eye and not the Manchester United way. It became more and more boring, to be honest. Mourinho has shown you can become hard to beat but still be entertaining.

Have you noticed a change in Mourinhoā€™s demeanour this season?

Outwardly at press conferences he was maybe a bit dour and sometimes irritable last season. But now he has established himself as a success in winning trophies at United he has become a bit more relaxed.

How would you rate Unitedā€™s title chances, and how many clubs are realistic contenders?

Iā€™m back to the days when I would automatically say youā€™d have to be a very good side to finish above United and win the league. I havenā€™t been able to view it that way for the last four seasons but can confidently do it now. Great starts can unravel but I donā€™t think it will and the rivals will be the usual suspects with Manchester City, Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool and maybe Arsenal as those fighting it out.

Liverpool summer transfer strategy slammed by Sky Sports pundit Shay Given

Show/hide articleā€¦

Thatā€™s according to former Premier League star Shay Given who has slammed the Redsā€™ transfer strategy.

But a move failed to materialise amid tapping up accusations.

Given insists the German chief should have been considering alternative options.

He told Sky Sports: ā€œYou would have liked to have thought a club the size of Liverpool would have had a Plan B.

ā€œObviously Van Dijk, on the last day, it became clear it wasnā€™t going to happen.

ā€œYou think a club of that size, when they canā€™t get him thereā€™s a Plan B.

Which is the most competitive derby in England and Scotland?

Show/hide articleā€¦

Which is the most competitive derby in England and Scotland?

Ahead of the Sheffield, Glasgow and London derbies live on Sky Sports this weekend, weā€™ve worked out which derbies are the most competitive in England and Scotlandā€¦

A Sky Sports panel selected 20 derby clashes across the two countriesā€™ leagues, of which we have calculated which have the closest all-time head-to-head league records.

According to our sums, the Black Country derby between West Brom and Wolves is the most competitive all-time derby from the list, with West Brom edging their rivals by a slender two-game margin - winning 54 and losing 52.

Blackburn are two tiers below Premier League rivals Burnley - but the League One side snatch the head-to-head victory by a narrow win/ loss ratio of 38-36.

The Tyne-Wear derby is the next most competitive fixture, with Newcastle claiming marginal head-to-head bragging rights over Sunderland.

In addition to winning promotion to the Premier League while Sunderland suffered relegation to the Championship, the Magpies have won 51 derbies since 1898, compared with Sunderlandā€™s 47 wins.

In Wales, Swansea and Cardiff have a competitive history - but the Swans have a 21-19 all-time win advantage.

In the East Midlands, Nottingham Forest and Derby County has, historically, also been a close affair with Forest narrowly edging head-to-heads 36-32 for wins from 90 meetings.

The 309th Old Firm league derby will play out live on Sky Sports at Ibrox this Saturday and, historically, itā€™s the sixth most competitive derby on our list.

Rangers have won more top-flight titles than any other team in the world with 54 triumphs and have defeated their Glasgow neighbours on 119 occasions in the league since 1890.

Despite that historic dominance, Celtic have won 103 head-to-heads and have hogged the Premiership trophy for the last six successive seasons - since Rangers won their most recent crown in 2010/11.

Sheffield United gained automatic promotion to the Championship last season after winning the League One title and will face rivals Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough for the first time since 2012 on Sunday, live on Sky Sports.

Despite spending the last six seasons in Englandā€™s third tier, United fans have the bragging rights for league derby wins with a 42-36 victory - while another 36 meeting have ended in a draw.

Including non-competitive and cup games, the two clubs have both won 48 derbies - meaning one side could claim an all-time advantage for that record with three points this weekend.

West Ham host Tottenham live on Sky Sports this Saturday, but the London rivals are now twice the distance apart at their new stadiums than when both clubs occupied White Hart Lane and Upton Park, respectively - currently separated by 12 miles as the crow flies.

However, Spurs have a greater margin of separation in terms of results, winning 53 derbies compared with West Hamā€™s 44 victories.

Chelsea are the derby kings for dominance over a local rival, with a 41-7 derby win record against neighbours Fulham, while Southampton also reign supreme over south-coast rivals Portsmouth with a 14-8 lead.

In Scotland, Hearts have a 119-69 win/ loss ratio against Hibernian from 272 league meetings, with 84 ending in a draw, while Dundee United also have historic dominance over rivals Dundee.

The Manchester clubs are both considered among the favourites to win the Premier League this term - but United boast a considerable 61-44 winning margin over City since 1894, while Bristol City have a 34-24 win/ loss ratio over Bristol Rovers.

Can Celtic and Sheffield Wednesday convert their recent league dominance and reduce head-to-head deficits against rivals Rangers and Sheffield United this weekend? And can Tottenham extend their impressive record against the Hammers?

Watch Rangers v Celtic live on Sky Sports Football or West Ham v Tottenham live on Sky Sports Premier League from 11.30am on Saturday and Sheffield Wednesday v Sheffield United live on Sky Sports Football from 12.30pm on Sunday

Man United squad confirmed as team arrive at hotel ahead of Burton Albion game

Show/hide articleā€¦

Manchester United have arrived at the teamā€™s hotel ahead of tonightā€™s Carabao Cup tie with Burton Albion at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils won the cup at Wembley last year by defeating Southampton thanks to Zlatan Ibrahimovicā€™s winner.

Mourinho has highlighted the importance of that triumph to provide the foundation for his tenure at Old Trafford and met his squad at The Lowry Hotel.

The Portuguese will likely ring the changes and Luke Shaw could receive an opportunity to start.

ā€œLuke Shaw is not injured anymore so it is a question of form,ā€ said Mourinho when pushed on Shawā€™s involvement.

ā€œItā€™s a question of option but he is not injured, heā€™s recovered from his injury.ā€

Widespread changes appear unlikely though, with Mourinho insisting that is not his intention despite the inferior opposition.

ā€œNo,ā€ Mourinho immediately replied when asked whether wholesale changes could be made. "I gave two days off only to four players, apart from that everybody is selected.

ā€œDo you want to know which four? David De Gea, Antonio Valencia, Matic and Bailly.ā€

With United joint-top of the league after five games, Burton represents a chance to freshen things up before resuming their title bid against Southampton this weekend.

Premier League grades: Ray Wilkins gives his verdict

Show/hide articleā€¦

Did your Premier League team live up to expectations this weekend?

Weā€™ve asked Sky Sports Now guest Ray Wilkins to give each side a grade, based purely on their weekend performance.

So, how did your team fare? Did they get a stunning A*, an awful F, or something in between? Read on to find outā€¦

It was a wonderful performance from City. I was saying only last week that I thought the trip to Watford might be a tricky game for them. Watford have started the season well and have big, physical players, while City are diminutive, quick and fierce on the counter-attack. But they didnā€™t have any problems and to score six goals in any game now is a remarkable achievement. And they couldā€™ve scored more which is frightening. Going forward they look like an extremely potent force which will be difficult to stop. However, they do still have that soft underbelly at the back. Richarlison should have really put Watford ahead early on but once you donā€™t score that, City will always come at you and will hurt you.

It wasnā€™t Manchester Unitedā€™s best performance but last season these were the games they werenā€™t winning. I still donā€™t think United are playing to their maximum at the moment but the results are still coming which is promising. The loss of Paul Pogba is a big blow for them but nevertheless, they still managed to score four without him against Everton. The goals came at the death again but a game of football is played over 90 minutes and you have to keep cracking away. United get an A for another four goals.

To win three games on the spin in the Premier League is no mean feat. The game at Swansea last week was probably one of the worst games Iā€™ve seen for a long time but nevertheless, they got the three points through Jamaal Lascellesā€™ header and he scored exactly the same header against Stoke. He wonā€™t get that freedom again next time he plays but the wins have got St Jamesā€™ Park rocking again. The atmosphere, I believe, was incredible at Newcastle on Saturday and once that place is rocking it will raise the level of the players. It was a fantastic win for Rafael Benitez and his side, and they had the chances to make it even more comprehensive.

It was a much-needed win for Eddie Howe and his side, especially at home. The first win is always important because it sets the momentum going and gives you the belief that you can go on to do something. Also, coming from a goal behind was very good for them because normally when you are on a bad run and you go a goal behind, you start to think here we go again. But they came through that with Jermain Defoe grabbing the winner. The goal was beautifully made by Jordon Ibe and the finish is Defoe all over. If you give him that opportunity then the ball is going to end up in the back of the net.

Where did that performance come from? Their work ethic was different class and they were extremely well organised. Granit Xhaka was sitting in that midfield area, allowing Aaron Ramsey to go and do what he does best. You also had the workhorses on the flanks and Sead Kolasinac looks a bit of a beast to me. He looks an excellent player and getting him on a free transfer is a real bonus. They created a number of really good chances and shouldā€™ve scored. I was really impressed with them.

Burnley managed only seven points away from home from the last campaign and it was their home form that kept them up. But after brilliant performances at Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool they are already nearly at that total with five points and itā€™s a remarkable effort from Sean Dyche and his men. They are doing a wonderful job and defensively they work their socks off for each other. I have to give them an A because for any team to go to Anfield and pick up a point against an extremely offensive team, itā€™s a brilliant achievement.

Itā€™s was a great result for Southampton at Crystal Palace. To get any victory away from home in the Premier League is a terrific feat and it will be a victory that starts to build a little bit of confidence for Mauricio Pellegrino and his side.

Swansea wanted a bore draw and thatā€™s what they got. They packed their defence and made it so tough for Tottenham to break them down. Anyone playing Spurs at the moment away from home has to be defensively sound and Paul Clement has obviously worked with his players all week, getting them very well drilled at the back. And the hard work paid off so good luck to them.

Facing any Tony Pulis side at home is a danger. West Ham would have gone there thinking they would have to be on their mettle for set plays, and to come away with a draw they certainly were. Itā€™s a great point for West Ham because for me, The Hawthorns is developing into one of the hardest places to go in the Premier League.

West Brom havenā€™t quite hit their stride yet this season. They would have been eyeing up all three points at home to West Ham, but itā€™s not quite clicking for them yet.

I really fancied Leicester to win this game, especially with their prowess on the counter-attack. However, they came up against a side very similar to themselves. Huddersfield worked extremely hard on Saturday and they got their reward with a point. Tom Ince is starting to come into his own which is a real positive for David Wagner. They have a really strong work ethic and are starting to build a strong home record. Iā€™ve been really impressed so far.

Leicester might have wanted more than a point on Saturday, especially after the chance Jamie Vardy missed. Heā€™s not going to get an easier chance than that all season. He got his feet in a tangle and doesnā€™t even make contact. Any contact whatsoever and itā€™s a goal so Craig Shakespeare and his side will come away very disappointed they didnā€™t get more out of the game.

Brighton were in the game for long periods of time and defended very well, but a couple of lapses in concentration cost them dear. Chris Hughtonā€™s side are finding out quite quickly the difference between the Premier League and the Championship. In the Championship you might get away with a slight lapse of concentration, however, in the Premier League you can forget about it.

Saturdayā€™s game is the story of Liverpoolā€™s season so far. They are creating bundles and bundles of chances, as you would expect with the attacking players they have, but they just canā€™t keep a clean sheet. Itā€™s a problem thatā€™s causing them no end of problems. The same happened against Sevilla in the week and they did it again on Saturday. People will look to the 35 chances they had on goal but it doesnā€™t matter if you have 135, the ball has to find the back of the net. They are just not converting the chances they are creating at the moment and thatā€™s got to be a concern for Klopp, especially with the way his defence is performing.

Stoke have better players than their current position in the league states. It could have been different for Mark Hughesā€™ side on Saturday because they missed a couple of brilliant chances right at the death to get themselves back in it. To be perfectly honest, I didnā€™t fancy them to lose at St Jamesā€™ Park so itā€™s a C.

It was a difficult game for Tottenham. Even with the quality that Mauricio Pochettino has at his disposal, Spurs struggled to break down the packed defence of Swansea. Itā€™s the first time in a long time Spurs have failed to score at home and theyā€™ll be extremely disappointed with that.

Chelsea started well and if Pedro takes his early chance, then I believe they go on to win the game comfortably. However, it didnā€™t quite happen for them and Arsenal dominated the rest of the game. I expected Chelsea to beat Arsenal but it wasnā€™t the best performance Iā€™ve seen from Antonio Conteā€™s side.

We were probably expecting a reaction from Crystal Palace. The reaction you are looking for is one of sheer effort, grit and determination. Forget the playing side of it for a second, you want to see players putting in a real shift for the new manager and I thought Palace did that. However, itā€™s pretty evident watching them play they are a side really lacking in confidence. The reintroduction of Wilfried Zaha will help them immensely and I think weā€™ll see Roy Hodgson change the way they play. Theyā€™ll start getting the ball forward much quicker and get more crosses in from the wide areas. The next three games in the league are a nightmare for Palace. Hodgson couldnā€™t have picked three worse games if he tried so itā€™s going to be difficult.

Iā€™m not going to mention the financial aspect when talking about Everton because I donā€™t think itā€™s fair. When a star player leaves you have to reinforce the squad and thatā€™s what Ronald Koeman has tried to do. Itā€™s been a difficult start for them though. When you watch a team that is really struggling you look at their work ethic first and foremost. It looks like Everton are getting very despondent very quickly. If they go a goal behind itā€™s as if the game is done and dusted. That canā€™t happen and itā€™s something they need to address. If you go a goal behind, you have to pick yourselves up, dust yourselves off and have a go at getting back into the game. Koeman needs his big players to stand up and be counted because the senior players are the ones that make the club. Don Howe once said to me a football club is only as good as its senior pros and from that day Iā€™ve remembered those words, and heā€™s spot on.

Watford have started the season well and the City games is one they must put behind them and forget about. The gameā€™s gone and they have got to remember itā€™s not City they have to finish above in the league this season to have a successful season. However, a 6-0 defeat is never good so it has to be a D.
