Liverpool owner reacts to fan’s plea to sign Virgil van Dijk in January

Show/hide article…

A Liverpool fan got his message across to owner John W Henry over the club’s pursuit of Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.

But the supporter’s plea was seemingly ignored.

The American Anfield chief was watching his Boston Red Sox baseball team at Fenway Park.

But sat just a few rows behind him was a staunch Liverpool supporter who took the chance to air his opinions on who the club should target when the transfer window re-opens for business in January.

And the fan was clear on who Henry needs to sign.

“Van Dijk in January,” he shouted at Henry, who eventually stood up and faced the fan.

“Van Dijk in January,” the fan repeated, before telling Henry: “It’s the right thing to do. He wants to play for us.”

Liverpool were desperate to sign the defender in the summer transfer window but failed to land the Dutchman, despite being prepared to pay £70million.

Chelsea were also interested in the 26-year-old but Saints refused to sell.

Van Dijk told his club in July that he wanted to leave and was forced to train alone - only returning earlier this month.

He made his playing return with the Under 23 side on Monday night in a 4-0 defeat by Aston Villa.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp meanwhile believes his side’s problems won’t be solved solely by signing Van Dijk.

The German watched his side lose 5-0 to Manchester City and then throw away the lead against Sevilla in midweek.

But asked whether his defence should be held accountable for the goals given away, Klopp said: "Let me see the goals first.

"The first goal starts in a situation in the midfield when we can shoot the ball easily away. Emre was a little bit late, that’s the first moment. I realised something would happen because until then it was a nil situation.

"We didn’t, and at the end I think it was through the legs of Dejan. I don’t know exactly. Yes that’s not perfectly defended but I have to see it again.

"It’s of course concentration, it’s nothing else in this situation. So we started the game good, kind of dominant, played football, had immediately good moments and they score from pretty much their first offensive situation.

“That’s a mixture of being unlucky and being a little bit ‘through the wind’ as we say in Germany.”

Liverpool made Van Dijk mistake, I think Sanchez would have joined Reds over Spurs - Molby

Show/hide article…

The Reds made bringing in a new centre-back a priority this summer with Southampton ace Virgil Van Dijk their No.1 target.

But Saints refused to do business after accusing Liverpool of tapping the 26-year-old Holland international up and he stayed put.

Molby believes Jurgen Klopp made a mistake not being more flexible when it became apparent getting a deal over the line for Van Dijk would be impossible.

Writing for the Liverpool Echo, Molby said: "The club went strong for Virgil van Dijk and was prepared to pay a world record fee for a defender.

Van Dijk could return to Southampton squad

Show/hide article…

Defender Virgil van Dijk could return to Southampton’s squad for the first time in eight months when they travel to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The Holland international, who will be given a late fitness test, missed the final 16 Premier League matches of last season following a ligament injury suffered in January and has not been selected so far this campaign after handing in a transfer request during the summer.

Denmark international midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is Saints’ only absentee ahead of the trip to Selhurst Park as he has returned to his homeland due to the birth of his daughter.

Failing to sign Van Dijk will cost Arsenal, not Chelsea

Show/hide article…

Both Chelsea and Arsenal wanted to sign Virgil van Dijk this summer, but it is Arsene Wenger that will regret missing out the most.

That is the view of former England and Liverpool star Jamie Carragher, who believes Arsenal are going into the derby against Chelsea on Sunday with their title hopes already in doubt.

Some may dismiss such a notion, given the campaign is barely a month old, but Carragher argues the Gunners have not solved a problem that has undermined their challenge for years.

As he explained to Standard Sport: “Arsenal haven’t improved at the back since last season. If you want to be successful, you have to have a strong defensive unit. But that’s what has let Arsenal down.

“Arsenal conceded 44 goals last season and that is far too many. You must aim to concede less than a goal a game, then that gives you a chance to challenge for the title.

“Just look at the last three champions: Chelsea last season (33 goals against), Leicester (36) and Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea in 2015 (32).

“This is why I was very surprised Arsenal didn’t bring another centre-back in, especially as they are going to play three at the back a lot more.

“Arsenal and Chelsea wanted to sign Van Dijk and the £60-£70million fee talked about was an awful lot and shows there is a dearth of centre-backs. If you want a player of that quality, you have to pay it. If you don’t, maybe you don’t achieve the targets you have set for the club.

“Southampton didn’t sell Van Dijk, but Chelsea still went and brought in Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen [back from loan] and added to what they had.”

It is a measure of how influential Antonio Conte has been since switching to a 3-4-3 (some see it as a 3-4-2-1) formation during a 3-0 defeat by Arsenal a year ago that Wenger, albeit seven months later, ended up following suit.

The Frenchman’s decision brought some positive results, none more so than the 2-1 win over the Blues in the FA Cup Final to prevent them from securing the Double. Yet Arsenal’s fragility remains, as was shown in League defeats by Stoke and, particularly, the 4-0 thrashing at Liverpool last month.

“It’s not just about individual players,” Carragher said. “It’s about the mentality of the managers, how they see football, how they see the game.

“There is no doubt with Conte, being Italian, he is very strong on the defensive side. It looks as if, for Wenger, the attacking side is the most important.

“The fact Arsenal didn’t really strengthen at the back apart from Sead Kolasinac, who is more of a left-back, shows where Wenger’s priorities are.

“It’s not just the defenders - it’s the cover in midfield. Arsenal don’t have a great holding midfield player who can protect that back three.

“You look at Arsenal’s midfield and I can’t get out of my head how they performed at Anfield. There was a lack of discipline.

“Aaron Ramsey is a fantastic talent, but he is a very attacking player to have as one of the two protecting your defence - and that is the risk Wenger appears willing to take.

“In contrast, Conte has N’Golo Kante, a player Arsenal wanted last year but who joined Chelsea for a bargain £32m. He was one of Conte’s first signings, which shows how important he felt a player like that is to his system, whereas Wenger hesitated.”

Arsenal at least go to Stamford Bridge knowing they followed up their FA Cup triumph over Conte’s men with a victory over them, albeit on penalties, in the Community Shield just six weeks ago.

Yet Carragher says those successes only give them a small crumb of comfort. He added: “The two wins will give the Arsenal players belief that they can beat Chelsea, but I don’t think it will have a psychological effect on Chelsea.

“They will be kicking themselves that they missed out on the Double. The Community Shield is just a friendly match.

“They just didn’t perform in the FA Cup Final but they won’t think Arsenal have a huge hold over them. Chelsea will be desperate to put that result to bed in this next big game against them. Chelsea will know that in this derby they can really kill Arsenal’s title aspirations.

“If you lose three games early on in the season, it gives you very little chance of challenging for the title - and Arsenal have already been beaten twice this season.

“In the last few seasons, Chelsea and Leicester only lost three in winning the League in 2015 and 2016 respectively. And while Chelsea had five defeats last season, they actually clinched it with more points because they won 30 games.

“That shows how important it is for Arsenal not to lose the game on Sunday. Their tactics have to change but I don’t think Wenger will.

“Hopefully, he will do something different because we are all sick of saying the same things. But I can only see one winner if Arsenal set up in the same way.”

Jamie Carragher will be a special guest at the prestigious Legends of Football charity event which returns on October 2 to the Grosvenor House Hotel, London - when Steven Gerrard will receive the 2017 Legend of Football Award. For tickets and packages go to lofootball.co.uk

Crystal Palace vs Southampton: Team news

Show/hide article…

Ahead of this weekend’s Premier League action, Sportsmail will be providing you with all you need to know about every fixture, with team news, provisional squads, betting odds and Opta stats. Here is all the information you need for Crystal Palace’s home clash with Southampton on Saturday.

Crystal Palace have won just two of their 16 Premier League matches against Southampton, (D4 L10), although both victories have come in the last four meetings (both at Selhurst Park).

Southampton have lost their last two Premier League trips to Selhurst Park to face the Eagles, this after avoiding defeat in their first six there (W3 D3).

Saints have won three of their last four meetings with Crystal Palace in all competitions, losing the other. Indeed, there hasn’t been a draw between the sides in any of the last 16 clashes (6 wins for Palace, 10 wins for Southampton).

Roy Hodgson (70 years old) will be only the third manager to take charge of a Premier League game in his 70’s after Sir Alex Ferguson and Bobby Robson. He is the first-ever PL manager to be appointed in his 70’s, however.

Should Crystal Palace lose and fail to score in this game, they’ll be the first top-flight side in history to open a season with five defeats and no goals.

Crystal Palace’s xG (expected goals) figure in the Premier League this season is 4.73 – suggesting that an average team would have scored five goals from the chances they’ve had. This xG tally is higher than Chelsea’s (4.08), who have scored eight goals.

The Premier League record for longest time taken by a team to score a goal in a season is 438 minutes, held by Newcastle United in 2005-06. If Crystal Palace don’t score before the 78th minute in this match, they’ll break this record.

Southampton have failed to score in nine of their last 12 Premier League matches, including three of their four games so far in 2017-18.

No Southampton player has scored more goals for the club in the Premier League since the start of 2016-17 than Charlie Austin (7 – level with Nathan Redmond), despite the striker only playing 989 minutes in this period (a goal every 141 mins on average).

Christian Benteke has scored five goals in his last five Premier League appearances against Southampton, including three in two for Crystal Palace.
