Match Preview: Burnley vs Saints

Show/hide article…

THE MATCH

Burnley vs Southampton

Saturday 24th February, 3pm GMT

Turf Moor

Premier League

THE OFFICIALS:

Referee: Bobby Madley

Assistants: Marc Perry, Mick McDonough

Fourth official: Mike Jones

For Southampton, it’s a chance to climb out of the relegation zone after dropping back into the bottom three a fortnight ago.

A win would certainly see them climb out, while a point might be good enough to lift them up at least one spot.

With a potentially huge home game against 19th-placed Stoke due up a week later, three points out of the trip to Turf Moor would be a major boost for Saints.

For Burnley, while they might be seventh in the Premier League, they will also feel the need for a positive result, given it is now 11 matches across all competitions since they recorded a victory.

TEAM NEWS

Burnley: The Clarets could welcome back Dean Marney and Chris Wood from knee injuries, as well as Phil Bardsley, who is back in training after a hamstring problem. James Tarkowski remains a major doubt with a groin injury, though, while Scott Arfield is also set to miss out.

Southampton: Saints are optimistic that Sofiane Boufal will be available once again, after missing last weekend’s FA Cup win at West Brom with a slight injury. Shane Long and Steven Davis, who were both absent last week too, are unlikely to be back, while Maya Yoshida is facing a couple of weeks on the sidelines, alongside long-term absentee Charlie Austin.

FORM GUIDE

TOP PERFORMERS

News that top scorer Chris Wood could return from injury this week will brighten Burnley’s outlook. Elsewhere, midfielder Johann Gudmundsson has been the team’s most creative force, leading the side in assists. Gudmundsson also netted in the Clarets’ previous home game, securing a 1-1 draw with leaders Manchester City.

Dušan Tadić’s goal in the FA Cup win at West Brom last weekend moved him up to joint second in the Saints scoring charts, alongside James Ward-Prowse. Both players are also tied at the head of the assist totals at Southampton.

DID YOU KNOW?

– Burnley have collected fewer points in their last ten Premier League games than any other side.

– Saints haven’t lost any of their last eight Premier League games in which they’ve started the day in the relegation zone (W4 D4).

Fellow loanee Sheyi Ojo could come back into the squad if Targett is absent, while boss Slavisa Jokanovic has no other injury worries.

Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves starts a two-game ban after picking up his 10th yellow card of the season in the midweek draw against Norwich.

Morocco’s Romain Saiss is likely to come in for the Championship leaders.

Burnley v Southampton

Chris Wood and Dean Marney are both likely to return to the Burnley squad after overcoming knee injuries.

Phil Bardsley has recovered from a hamstring problem and James Tarkowski could be involved after a groin injury, but Scott Arfield is set to miss out.

Sofiane Boufal could be available for Southampton despite carrying a knock.

Maya Yoshida faces at least a month on the sidelines with a knee problem, while Shane Long, Steven Davis and Charlie Austin remain out.

Alistair Mann: "Despite residing in the bottom three, Southampton can boast more recent positives than Burnley.

"Since losing to Crystal Palace in the opening week of 2018, they’ve lost just once more in eight matches, with an encouraging FA Cup run helping to improve previously flagging confidence.

"They’d still happily swap places with the Clarets, whose Premier League status has been all but assured by a brilliant start to the campaign which left them as high as fourth in early December.

“A catalogue of injuries has since hampered their pleasant dreams of European football, but pressure-free, keen to end their 10-game winless run and with several key players now returning, they will certainly test the Saints’ newfound resolve.”

Burnley manager Sean Dyche: "We’re definitely not the real deal, we’re a squad that are learning and improving, and with that you sometimes get these challenges that come your way of a tough run, bad run - whichever words you choose.

"In regard of the team the literal challenge is the next game, but in the bigger picture it is to be better than last season.

“I think we have been by our performances; now it’s about turning our performances into points on the board.”

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino: "Every single victory helps us to believe in our way and our model. This, for me, is the best drug for this team.

"I believe in the character and attitude of my team, and that is the most important thing right now.

“(After Burnley) we have a lot of away games and have to be really stronger than before.”

It is a bit left field for me to say Burnley are going to score twice, because they have only managed it four times in 27 league games this season, but that is what I am going with.

Premier League clubs tracking Ostersunds’ Saman Ghoddos - sources

Show/hide article…

A host of Premier League clubs are tracking Ostersunds striker Saman Ghoddos following his impressive Europa League displays against Arsenal, sources have told ESPN FC.

West Ham United, Leicester City, Southampton, West Bromwich Albion and Brighton & Hove Albion had scouts watch Ghoddos, who helped set up both goals in Ostersunds’ stunning 2-1 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday night.

Ghoddos caught the eye in the first leg meeting in Sweden last week and won praise from Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger in that game.

“Technically and tactically, I was impressed by him,” Wenger said in his news conference ahead of the second leg.

The 24-year-old scored four goals and had four assists in Ostersunds’ Europa League campaign, where they progressed through the qualifying rounds to the group stages before the round-of-32 meeting with Arsenal.

Ghoddos’ agent, Ferhat Cifici, was in London to watch the game against Arsenal and confirmed there was interest in the player, but he refused to reveal the clubs chasing him.

Clubs from all over Europe have been alerted to Ghoddos’ form with Celta Vigo and Hoffenheim also expressing interest.

Ostersunds are aware of the growing interest in Ghoddos and they are bracing themselves for offers when the transfer window reopens in the summer.

Fleming: “We look a match for anyone”

Show/hide article…

As well as emphasising the importance placed on performance and attitude, Under-18s coach Craig Fleming cannot deny the buzz around his young side, after a string of nine league games unbeaten propelled them into second in the table – level on points with Arsenal.

And with team selection stretched after injury problems and Under-23s call-ups, Fleming has been especially pleased with the less experienced members of his squad, who have all stepped up to the mark; epitomised by 16-year-old Sean Brennan’s match-winning goal in the 1-0 victory over Aston Villa last Saturday.

With this week’s scheduled game at Swansea postponed, it gave Fleming a chance to reflect on the season to date, with the Under-18s coach impressed by his young side’s recent efforts.

“I’ve said it all along, it is the performances that we’re after, but if good performances are winning us games then that is also a positive,” Fleming reflected.

"We’re pleased to be getting results, of course. We look a match for any side in the country in our current form.

"Myself and Butts (assistant coach Danny Butterfirld) have learned from mistakes that we made in our playing days, and we try to make these young lads aware of the dangers before they happen. They’re a good bunch, they listen and understand.

"This group have improved massively. If I look at where these lads were when they walked in the building to where they are now, it is unrecognisable for some – such a different level.

"We’ve got lads who are training regularly with the 23s and first-team, Michael [Obafemi] has made his first-team debut, some have earned professional contracts, so largely it has been a really positive year.

"The boys are starting to get a chance with the 23s now. Credit to Michael who scored his first goal at that level this week. Jake [Vokins] as well looked solid against Newcastle.

“It means we’re scarce in terms of experienced players for the 18s, but, equally, the older lads are getting their chance and it paves the way for the first years to showcase their talent.”
