Carrillo can fill Charlie’s boots

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino believes Guido Carrillo can fill the boots of injured striker Charlie Austin and help steer Saints towards Premier League safety.

Austin, still the club’s top scorer this season, is out for three months with a hamstring injury, and Saints have lacked a physical presence in attack since he was sidelined.

Carrillo, who will join for £19.2m from Monaco, is a tall and imposing forward, who Pellegrino has worked with during his time at Estudiantes.

Pellegrino believes the 26-year-old can be the answer to Saints’ problems.

He said: “I think that the main thing he has been working in Monaco more than two years in the top team, playing Champions League, high level.

“He’s a profile of player who can replace in this moment the profile of Charlie. A big body, can hold the ball, good in the air and can be good to help us to be stronger.

“Obviously it’s a plus that I knew him when he was really young. He was 19, at the beginning of his career.

“The plus is that he’s been working with a top team in Monaco and hopefully good news for us in the next two days.”

Carrillo has something of a mixed goal scoring record, and when asked whether he can settle into life in the Premier League and become a regular on the scoresheet, he replied: “You never know. It’s really difficult to sign players at this level, the top level.

“When you move one player to the other everything changes, the teammates, the culture, the methodology of the manager.

“Sometimes for some of them it’s better, sometimes the same, sometimes it’s worse.

“For this reason it’s not about big player with qualities, it’s about how we think the player can adapt.

“In one year’s time maybe we can analyse, but now it’s difficult.”

Saints are also working on further signings, with Spartak Moscow winger Quincy Promes still a potential £30m signing.

“I don’t know. We are waiting for some answers,” said Pellegrino of the potential Promes deal.

“Still we have another five or six days to keep working and pushing and after we see.

“He’s an important player but there are a lot of players I would like to bring.

“He’s one of the players we were following many times ago and it’s one possibility.”

Having raked in £75m from the sale of Virgil van Dijk, Saints have been under pressure to enter the transfer market.

Pellegrino is unsure whether the capture of Carrillo will prove to be business done for Saints, or if it will open the floodgates.

“It depends,” he admitted. “At the beginning we were thinking about three players, and after two.

“In players we think the profile we don’t have here and can improve the qualities in the squad.

“If we cannot maybe it’s one. Maybe it’s four. We don’t know.

“The quality is more important than the quantity.”

Pellegrino to go strong against Watford

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino will field the strongest side available to him for tomorrow’s FA Cup fourth round tie against Watford, believing that momentum is more important than resting players ahead of a crucial top flight double header.

Saints take on the Hornets at St Mary’s in the last 16 before facing relegation rivals Brighton on Wednesday night, and then second bottom West Brom three days later.

There could be a temptation for Pellegrino to rest players, but given Saints’ improved recent performances he wants to keep the bandwagon rolling.

Pellegrino said: “I think if we do some changes it’s because they are not physically 100 per cent.

“Obviously we have another three games in seven days but I will try to put our best on the pitch.

“For us it’s really important for us to keep going and we’re physically prepared to play these three games. If something happens then ok but for now we keep going and thinking about the first one.

“In some positions we have more possibilities than others but now the best thing in the squad now with Maya (Yoshida) coming back and just Charlie (Austin) outside – Sam (McQueen) will be back soon training with us.

“The rest of the team I think are ready.”

Shane Long is available again after sitting out the Tottenham game with the flu, though Ryan Bertrand is among those now suffering symptoms, while Maya Yoshida has recovered from a hamstring injury.

Pellegrino’s trust in Carrillo

Show/hide article…

The 26-year-old completed his move to St Mary’s from French club AS Monaco on Thursday night, linking up once again with his fellow Argentine, who he worked under at Estudiantes.

“I knew him when he was really young, 19-years-old,” said Pellegrino. "It was the beginning of his career then.

"He moved to Monaco and he has been competing in a really good team, in the Champions League, with really good competition, and obviously he has improved a lot, but especially I’m pleased because I trust in him as a person and a human being and a character.

“He will be an important player if everything around him falls into place. Like every single player, everyone needs the context, but I think he can help us to be stronger.”

Pellegrino also believes Carrillo could be an ideal fit given the absence of Charlie Austin, who is expected to be out for some time yet.

“We were working really hard and pushing really hard to try to bring in somebody who in this moment can replace Charlie, or this profile of player that we don’t have right now,” said the Saints boss.

"We expect that maybe Charlie will be out in the next couple of months. We hope that maybe he can come back earlier, but it will be a long period of time in two months with a lot of games in front of us that we have to compete in.

“Guido is someone else who can give a plus with this profile, because he is a big body, he can hold the ball, he is good in the air and I think he can help us.”

Southampton v Watford preview: Javi Gracia takes Hornets reins

Show/hide article…

Javi Gracia takes charge of his first match in English football as Watford travel to Southampton in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday.

Gracia replaced Marco Silva last weekend, becoming the 10th manager to work for the Pozzo family since they took over in 2012. The 47-year-old Spaniard, who has signed an 18-month contract, had been out of work since leaving Russian club Rubin Kazan last June.

He takes over a club that have picked up just one point from their last four Premier League games.

Meanwhile, Southampton, who picked up a morale-boosting 1-1 draw with Tottenham last weekend, are looking to reach the fifth round for the first time in four seasons.

These two clubs have already met twice in Premier League this season. Watford won 2-0 at St Mary’s in September while the Hornets then came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Vicarage Road in January.

Mauricio Pellegrino will field the strongest side available to him as he looks to build on the momentum gained with the draw against Spurs.

Shane Long is available again after recovering from flu, though Ryan Bertrand is among those now suffering symptoms, while Maya Yoshida has recovered from a hamstring injury and is back in the squad.

Troy Deeney looks certain to miss Saturday’s FA Cup fourth-round tie.

Watford’s captain has been sidelined by illness, and has yet to train since Gracia was appointed on Sunday. Heurelho Gomes and Molla Wague are also out, while Tom Cleverley faces a late fitness test.

This will be first FA Cup meeting between these two sides in the FA Cup since their semi-final match in April 2003, Southampton running out 2-1 winners at Villa Park.

The Saints have lost each of their last five FA Cup games at St Mary’s against Premier League opposition, with Southampton also in the top-flight for the last four encounters.

Watford have won six of their last eight FA Cup games (L2), with those two losses coming away to Millwall last season and the semi-final against Crystal Palace in April 2016.

Southampton have been eliminated from four of their last five FA Cup fourth round ties, progressing only against Yeovil Town in 2014.

Abdoulaye Doucoure has scored in each of their last three meetings between Watford and Southampton - two of which have come in the 90th minute or later.

Alternative bargain transfer window targets for Premier League clubs

Show/hide article…

We’ve found eight alternative transfer targets for Premier League clubs to consider before the window closes.

We have scoured the globe to locate cheaper, statistically similar, alternatives to the big-name, big-money rumour-mill transfers, using the Sky Sports Power Rankings and valuations from transfermarkt.co.uk.

The Power Rankings methodology reflects a player’s performance by awarding points to players for 32 different stats.

For this bargain hunt, we used players’ average points tally per 90 minutes in all competitions, including internationals, and adapted the methodology to exclude points obtained from match results.

Borussia Dortmund reportedly rejected a £50m offer from Arsenal for Aubameyang on Wednesday - but the Gunners look likely to meet the £60m asking price.

The Gabon international has scored 13 goals in 15 appearances for the Bundesliga club this term, having signed from St. Etienne for an undisclosed fee in 2013, thought to be in the region of £12m.

In all competitions, Sevilla forward Wissam Ben Yedder narrowly outscores Aubameyang in the Power Rankings per 90 minutes - despite having a slightly lower strike rate of a goal every 112 minutes, compared with 97.

But Ben Yedder makes ground with a broader contribution on the pitch, recording superior numbers for chances created, tackles, duels and interceptions.

Arsenal and Manchester City have been linked with seasoned West Brom defender Jonny Evans, with the former reportedly in talks over a £25m move.

Christopher Schindler has shone during Huddersfield’s inaugural Premier League campaign and outscored Evans in the Power Rankings to date.

Schindler surpasses his counterpart for tackles, interceptions, clearances and duels won, while both players average around 30 passes and 50 touches per game.

Manchester United have been linked with Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann for over a year and, having signed Diego Costa from Chelsea, Atleti may well cash in.

The Spain international has scored six goals and created five assists from 17 La Liga appearances, despite making a slow start to the campaign.

At just 20 years old, Bayer Leverkusen youngster Leon Bailey has outperformed Griezmann in the Power Rankings per 90 minutes this term, scoring seven goals and creating five assists from 16 Bundesliga appearances.

Other options: Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Josip Ilicic and former Manchester United star Memphis Depay

Liverpool have been linked with Stoke stopper Jack Butland, having replaced regular 'keeper Simon Mignolet with Loris Karius in recent weeks after making familiar errors.

Butland has conceded a league-high 43 goals during a difficult campaign at Stoke - but at just 24 years old, the England international has proven Premier League calibre with five seasons in England’s top flight under his belt.

At 25, Alisson has become the first-choice stopper at Roma this season and only conceded 16 goals from 21 appearances in Serie A - having joined the club from Brazil side Internacional for around £7m in 2016.

Both keepers record similar numbers for saves - although the Brazil international has kept nine league clean sheets to Butland’s three - in addition to conceding fewer goals.

Arsenal and Liverpool have been linked with Leicester winger Riyad Mahrez, who was instrumental in the Foxes’ fairy-tale, title-winning campaign during 2015/16.

The Algerian has hit form this season after a disappointing 2016/17, scoring eight goals and making eight assists from 24 league games.

Florian Thauvin failed to impress during a one-year stint at Newcastle and was offloaded to former club Marseille at a loss in July last year. But the 24-year-old winger has hit form in Ligue 1, with 10 goals and eight assists from 22 league games.

Both players record similar numbers for crosses, passes, duels won and dribbles completed - but the Marseille man outperforms Mahrez in the Power Rankings.

Alexis Sanchez’s summer move to Manchester City collapsed after Monaco midfielder Thomas Lemar reportedly snubbed a move to the Emirates.

Arsenal remain linked with the France international, as do Liverpool, after Arsene Wenger finally lost Sanchez to Manchester United and Liverpool lost Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona during this window.

Ajax midfielder Hakim Ziyech has played a pivotal role at the club since his £4m switch from FC Twente in 2016 - scoring four goals and making eight assists from 19 Eredivisie games this season.

Both players fire crosses into the box frequently and complete around 40 passes per game, with Ziyech edging Lemar at aerials, duels won, shots on target, interceptions, tackles, dribbles completed and touches.

Jamie Vardy spearheaded Leicester’s title tilt two years ago and, like Mahrez, suffered a dip in form last term. But the 31-year-old has looked more like his old self this term and has reportedly attracted interest from Everton and Chelsea.

The England international’s irrepressible pace provides a lethal counter-attack outlet and he has 10 goals and one assist from 23 league appearances this season.

Porto forward Moussa Marega may be an unfamiliar name on these shores, but the Mali frontman’s blistering pace has ripped through defences in Portugal with 15 goals and three assists from just 17 league games.

Athletic Bilbao centre-back Aymeric Laporte made his La Liga debut at just 18 years old. Still only 23, the Frenchman has had an underwhelming season to date - but hit the headlines this week amid reported interest from Manchester City.

Sevilla centre-back Clement Lenglet has outscored compatriot Laporte in the Power Rankings during his first full season at the club, having joined from Nancy for £5m in the winter window last year.

Both players have recorded strikingly similar stats per 90 minutes in all competitions, averaging around 65 touches, 45 passes, five duels won, five clearances, two tackles, two headers, an interception and a block - but Lenglet edges Laporte in the rankings.
