Brighton vs Southampton: Team news, kick-off time, odds and stats

Show/hide article…

Ahead of this weekend’s Premier League action, Sportsmail will be providing you with all you need to know about every fixture, with team news, provisional squads, betting odds and Opta stats. Here is all the information you need for Brighton’s home clash with Southampton.

Brighton could welcome Beram Kayal and Sam Baldock into their matchday squad for the first time this season when they take on Southampton on Sunday afternoon.

Midfielder Kayal has been out of action since breaking his leg in a pre-season friendly in August and striker Baldock underwent calf surgery in the summer, but both are now in contention to feature at the Amex Stadium.

Seagulls manager Chris Hughton has no fresh injury concerns, with Steve Sidwell the only absentee as he continues his recovery from a back problem.

Southampton will be without club record signing Mario Lemina for their Premier League game at Brighton.

The former Juventus midfielder is waiting to learn the full extent of an ankle injury sustained in training this week and that could mean a rare start for Sofiane Boufal.

Boss Mauricio Pellegrino has no other new injury or suspension worries. Full-back Jeremy Pied is still in rehab following a groin injury.

Brighton have won just two of their last 13 games against Southampton in all competitions (W2 D4 L7). Their last top-flight victory over Saints came in December 1981.

Southampton have been victorious in five of their last seven competitive away trips to Brighton & Hove Albion (D1 L1).

Southampton have won more Premier League away matches in 2017 (5) than they have at home (4).

Saints have failed to score in nine of their last 15 Premier League matches, netting 10 goals overall in this period.

Brighton have already won as many Premier League games this calendar year (3) as 2016-17 relegated sides Middlesbrough (1 in 19 games) and Sunderland (2 in 19 games) combined.

Only Crystal Palace (1.9 per cent) have converted a lower proportion of their total shots in the Premier League than Southampton (5.8 per cent) this season. Southampton were also the worst side in the 2016-17 Premier League for shot conversion rate (7.5 per cent).

Shane Long hasn’t scored in any of his last 19 Premier League appearances for Southampton, despite playing 941 minutes and attempting 25 shots in this spell.

Pascal Gross has been involved in six of Brighton’s nine Premier League goals this season (two goals, four assists).

Gross has already equalled his tally of assists (4) in both the 2016-17 and 2015-16 Bundesliga seasons whilst at Ingolstadt.

Nathan Redmond has attempted the most shots (24) without scoring a goal in the Premier League so far this season.

Brighton boss Chris Hughton warns side against complacency

Show/hide article…

Chris Hughton has warned Brighton they cannot afford to be cocksure following last week’s victory at West Ham as he looked ahead to their fixture with Southampton.

The newly-promoted Seagulls delivered a stunning blow to Slaven Bilic’s beleaguered side by walking away from the London Stadium with a 3-0 win, their first Premier League away triumph.

The result left Bilic facing the prospect of the sack but the pressure on him was alleviated after the Hammers battled back from a 2-0 deficit to beat London rivals Tottenham 3-2 in the Carabao Cup.

Hughton, therefore, is refusing to take anything for granted in the top flight and has urged his men not to let their performance levels drop ahead of a showdown with south coast rivals Southampton on Sunday afternoon.

The Brighton manager told the club’s official website: 'There’s always that danger (of over-confidence), but it’s my responsibility, and the responsibility of the people around me, to make sure we’re level-headed going into every game.

'What we’ve learned so far in this division is that if your level of performance is like it was at West Ham last Friday, you have every chance of winning a game.

'But if they had scored early in the game, then it could have been completely different. I know the teams were completely changed, but we saw in West Ham’s midweek game [against Tottenham], it looked over and, of course, it wasn’t.

‘It’s my responsibility to make sure we’re grounded and going into every game knowing that we have to work very hard to get a result.’

Hughton has a near fully fit squad to choose from, with Steve Sidwell the only absentee as the midfielder continues his recovery from a back injury.

Fellow midfielder Beram Kayal and forward Sam Baldock could be included in the matchday squad for the first time this season after their recoveries from a broken leg and calf surgery respectively.

Both players have turned out for the under-23 side but Hughton is wary of rushing the pair back into action.

He said: 'Both of them have played in the last two under-23 games, but they wouldn’t have had the training and build-up that the others have had.

‘They looked good in the games and have worked very hard on their rehab programmes.’

Striker Tomer Hemed is in contention to return to the starting line-up after completing a three-game suspension for violent conduct, and Hughton added: ‘It’s a big boost, he was in very good form before the ban, so it’s great to have him back.’

Van Dijk is set-piece wizz after cracking training ground free kick

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk has continued his resurgence to Southampton first-team favour as the defender steps up his rehab with a thunderous free kick in training.

The Dutchman has been at the centre of any news coming out of St Mary’s since the summer after his transfer request and proposed Liverpool move fell through.

The 26-year-old missed the Saints’ first four games Premier League games, while he recovered from an ankle injury suffered in January, only to make a dire return to football losing 4-0 against Aston Villa for Saints’ under 23.

But the defender, who could still be targeted by Liverpool in January, looks well and truly on the road to recovery after firing a rocket free kick at Staplewood.

The defender made his return in September’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace, where he saw three minutes of game time, before remaining an unused substitute in his side’s 1-0 defeat at home to Manchester United.

But Van Dijk has featured in every minute of Southampton’s last three and has slowly reestablished himself as first-team regular after following up a 2-1 defeat by Stoke last month with last weekend’s victory over West Brom - his best performance since his return by far - and a 2-2 draw with Newcastle at St Mary’s.

Meanwhile, boss Mauricio Pellegrino is focusing on other matters as the Argentine is likely to reward Sofiane Boufal with a rare start in Sunday’s Premier League game at south-coast rivals Brighton.

Pellegrino confirmed club-record signing Mario Lemina has been ruled out due to an ankle injury and Boufal’s wonder goal against West Brom - his first of the season - last week could earn him a first start since early September.

‘This is one possibility,’ Pellegrino said. 'I’m happy with that because Sofiane I think in the last two or three games is playing well, even when he came from the bench.

‘Against Stoke and Newcastle and the other day obviously, and I’m really happy with that because I want to improve the competition in the squad.’

Saints supporters will hope that their club-record £16million signing him from Lille in August 2016 will be able to kick-start his Southampton career following his Baggies performance.

His brilliant solo effort last week, which clinched Pellegrino’s side victory against the Baggies, coupled with Lemina’s setback, could see the Morocco international race up the team sheet.

Boufal, restricted to only one Premier League start this season, let his frustrations spill over in an impassioned goal celebration in front of Pellegrino four minutes after stepping onto the pitch.

‘I have spoken to him about that,’ the Saints boss said. 'Obviously it’s something private.

'The only thing that I can say is that I’m happy with his action and reaction on the pitch - how he was playing in the last few games, not just the other day.

‘Because for me when you make a change you want to make an impact on the game and Sofiane did it.’

Pellegrino gave an insight into why he has been reluctant to trust Boufal with a starting place since replacing former manager Claude Puel in the summer.

‘Most of the players who have got ability, for me, I always explain to them that you have to choose the right moment,’ he said.

'When you go one-v-one, or when you have to play one-touch, or play simple and pass to a team-mate who is in a better position.

‘In modern football, to see before you receive the ball is crucial. This is the main target for our offensive players, not just Sofiane, all of them.’

Pellegrino, still waiting to learn the full extent of Lemina’s ankle problem, has no other new injury concerns as his side bid for back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

WATCH: Virgil Van Dijk’s stunning free-kick

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk showed off his technique with a stunning free-kick in training.

Southampton take on Brighton this Sunday, live on Sky Sports Premier League, and after seeing Van Dijk in sweet scoring form on Instagram, Chris Hughton’s side will be wary of conceding free-kicks against their south-coast rivals.

After refusing to train with the rest of the squad during pre-season in an attempt to force through a move away from St Mary’s, Van Dijk had to wait until halfway through September to make his first appearance under new boss Mauricio Pellegrino.

But he has worked his way back into Pellegrino’s team after being told he would not be allowed to leave and has started in Southampton’s last three games.

And it is clear to see why so many clubs were interested in buying the player during the summer window after seeing him fire a stunning free-kick past a helpless goalkeeper in training.

Click on the video above to see Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk score a screamer of a free-kick in training ahead of their game against Brighton, live on Sky Sports.

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino: I slammed Sofiane Boufal for his celebration

Show/hide article…

Boufal came off the bench to fire Saints to a 1-0 win over West Brom with a goal of the season contender, running 70 yards before beating Ben Foster.

The Moroccan celebrated by running up to Pellegrino on the half-way line before pumping his chest in front of the Argentine, who has been leaving him on the bench.

Pellegrino said: “I have spoken with him about that celebration.

“It is obviously something private but the only thing I can say is that I am happy with his action, his reaction on the pitch how he was playing in the last few games and not just the other day.
