Southampton vs Hull team news: Squads revealed, injuries and more

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel is expected to make changes to the team that on Tuesday lost 4-2 at Chelsea as he continues with his favoured rotation policy when they host Hull.

He has been boosted by the return to fitness of Sam McQueen, though the left-back is not expected to make an instant return to the Frenchman’s starting XI. Matt Targett and Charlie Austin also returned to training this week, but will not be ready for Saturday’s fixture.

Hull manager Marco Silva is boosted by the return of Oumar Niasse against Southampton after the striker had his suspension rescinded.

Niasse was shown a straight red card in the win over Watford, but it has been subsequently overturned following an appeal from the club, and the striker is likely to retain his place in the side.

Defender Omar Elabdellaoui remains absent with a back problem and may not play again this season, while Ryan Mason, Moses Odubajo and Will Keane remain absent with long-term injuries.

Saints vs Stigma event launched

Show/hide article…

The event is being held to raise awareness of mental health and to encourage people to join the city-wide movement against stigma.

One in four people will experience a mental health problem this year, yet many suffer in silence. This can result in an individual not seeking help before reaching crisis point.

That’s why Saints Foundation and the city are uniting, using football to raise the topic locally and encourage people to speak up about mental health issues and speak out against stigma.

Teams representing the city’s young people, adults and senior residents will compete alongside special guest teams from Arsenal, Brighton, Norwich and Belgian club Gent, as well as a Southampton Labour Party vs Conservative Party match.

Greg Baker, Head of Saints Foundation and Community Partnerships, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with the City Council on this event, which forms part of our ‘Saints Together’ week.

"We hope that it will help break down the stigma and associated issues surrounding mental health, an issue that underpins many of the projects that Saints Foundation deliver.

"These three days will bring together people of all ages and backgrounds with whom the Foundation work, and help to support positive mental health in the city.”

There are a host of activities taking place for spectators to get involved with while they watch the action:

Saints Street Football Exhibition

Javier Mascherano, Diego Forlan and other famous first goals

Show/hide article…

Nearly seven years after leaving Liverpool for Barcelona, Javier Mascherano has finally scored his first goal for the Camp Nou club.

Leading 5-1 against Osasuna, Barca won a penalty when Luis Suarez was fouled inside the area. Mascherano was handed the chance to break his duck, and he did so with aplomb.

The Argentina star took the spot kick in the most emphatic way possible, thundering a finish into the back of the net. It was his first goal, in his 319th match for the Catalan side.

To honour Mascherano, talkSPORT take a look at other famous first goals which came after droughts in front of the net. You can find out about them all by clicking the right arrow, above…

Tony Pulis praises study for highlighting Premier League’s overachievers

Show/hide article…

Tony Pulis has praised a Sky Sports study which compared the total transfer cost of Premier League squads with their current points haul.

The West Brom boss has taken his side to an impressive eighth place this season, and the study revealed their 44 points earned this term has cost just £1.47m in transfer fees per point. That works out as the best value per point in the Premier League.

In contrast, Manchester United’s points haul has come at a cost of almost £8m per point in transfer spending, a league high.

Indeed, United’s £93.25m outlay on Paul Pogba last summer exceeds the value of squads at Hull (£56.1m), Burnley (£56.4m), Middlesbrough (£57.7m, West Brom (£64.5m), Bournemouth (£66.5m), Swansea (£71.8m), Watford (£73.7m) and Sunderland (£82.1m).

Pulis says the Sky Sports study is a good indication of which managers are overachieving with the resources at their disposal.

“There’s never a sense of understanding in what you’ve got, the material you’ve got to work with,” he said. "That’s never taken into account.

"If you lose games, no one ever looks at the situation and analyses it to that depth. So it’s nice that the table has come out and shown there are lots of managers out there who might not win as many games as the top clubs but if you actually put it into perspective they’re not doing a bad job.

“That’s not just myself, but people at the smaller clubs who over achieve year after year after year. And there’s a lot of top managers - and the list shows that as well - who underachieve year after year after year, but still win more games than we do.”

Discussing the contrast between West Brom’s points-per-pound record and United’s, Pulis said: "Our aim every year is different.

"They have to win titles and trophies, we have to stay in the Premier League and hopefully get a good cup run. The top six or seven clubs are getting further and further away from the rest of us. If there’s not enormous amounts of money to invest then that will continue to happen.

“You will get the odd year, the odd occasion where it’s tipped up the other side but the majority of the time the people who have the money to spend will get the best players.”
