Southampton want Kevin Wimmer if they lose Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Southampton will target Kevin Wimmer if they lose Virgil van Dijk this summer.

The Saints have so far refused to sanction Van Dijk’s exit this summer, despite the Holland international’s wish to leave St Mary’s.

Nevertheless, the Van Dijk camp remain hopeful that the central defender will eventually be allowed to leave the south coast this summer - with Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City prepared to make huge bids.

Despite their hardline stance; Southampton have made contingency plans in case the defender does leave.

And Tottenham star Wimmer features prominently on the Saints’ list of candidates to replace Van Dijk.

Mauricio Pochettino is keen to keep Wimmer at White Hart Lane, but is aware of his desire to play regularly first team football.

But an offer of around £20million could be enough to persuade Tottenham to part with the Austria international.

Yoshida relishing intense training

Show/hide article…

The Saints squad is currently on its second training camp of the summer, with this week’s trip to France following the visit to Austria earlier in the month.

Yoshida and his teammates have again been working extensively, with a number of double and high-intensity sessions.

The Japan international defender explained that, while it has been tough, the players are feeling the benefits.

"It’s a really good place to be, and training is really hard,” he said of the trip to Évian-les-Bains.

"We are really enjoying every moment with the new manager. He has a good philosophy and the organisation is really good.

"Training is really hard, but that’s good for us to improve ourselves. We try new things a lot and I’m sure it’s going to be really good for us and we’re really looking forward to the new season.

“Especially with the new manager, we have to understand how he wants us to play together.”

Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool: John Aldridge opens up on potential transfer

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk has been backed to make a move to Liverpool by John Aldridge

The Reds have been linked with the Southampton defender in recent months.

But after being accused of tapping up Van Dijk by Saints, Liverpool have taken a step back in their pursuit.

Aldridge believes in the end Jurgen Klopp will get his man though.

Speaking to the Independent.ie, he explained: “Southampton know Van Dijk is unhappy, Liverpool want him so it seems Van Dijk will move.

“Jurgen Klopp knows what he wants and he wants quality, there’s no point in signing peripheral players just for appearances.

The next Dele Alli? Fantasy Football pick out this season’s future stars

Show/hide article…

The next Dele Alli? Sky Sports Fantasy Football pick out this season’s future stars

With the return of Premier League football just around the corner, there is a new generation of emerging talent waiting for their chance to shine.

Finding a player who can match the meteoric rise of Dele Alli is one of the most rewarding challenges facing Sky Sports Fantasy Football managers this summer, with value to be had from breakthrough starlets.

The likes of Marcus Rashford and Gabriel Jesus also captured the headlines last season, and have had their valuations bumped up accordingly, but who will be the Premier League’s next rising star?

Following an incredibly successful summer for England’s youth teams, Sky Sports Fantasy Football have picked out some of the wonderkids to watch this year - all available for bargain prices.

The obvious place to start the search for the next Dele is with the club which nurtured his talents - Tottenham.

Having refused to follow their rivals in investing heavily this summer, Spurs look set to give youth the chance to shine this season and Winks is next on the production line.

The 21-year-old midfielder was rapidly enhancing his prospects for a regular starting spot before suffering an ankle injury in April, ending his season prematurely.

Used predominantly as an understudy to Mousa Dembele, Winks notched a goal and an assist in his debut top-flight season.

While Winks will be keen to improve on those statistics, he managed to register the third highest pass-completion rate in the Premier League at 90.2 per cent, only bettered by Dembele and John Stones, meaning he’s primed for passing bonus points.

He’s been rebuilding his match fitness on Spurs’ pre-season tour of the USA and found the net against Roma this week, adding to the sense that he can be the club’s next young star.

Lookman was a key member of England’s historic U20 World Cup winning side. The Everton winger scored three goals and had the most successful dribbles out of any player at the tournament.

With Romelu Lukaku out of the picture and Ross Barkley expected to follow, Lookman should have the chance to establish a first-team place under Ronald Koeman.

The 19-year-old caught the eye with seven goals in the first half of the season with Charlton, before coming off the bench to score on his Toffees debut against Manchester City and going on to make seven additional appearances, including three starts.

Fellow young Toffees Tom Davies, Mason Holgate, Matthew Pennington and Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be looking to shine, but it is the goal-scoring winger Lookman who offers the greatest appeal for Sky Sports Fantasy Football bosses.

Abraham burst onto the scene with Bristol City last year and couldn’t have wished for a better start to his professional career.

The 19-year-old scored 13 goals in all competitions in his first 16 games of the season, earning him the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Month award for September.

Abraham returned to Chelsea from his loan-spell with an end-of-season record of 23 goals in 40 games, the joint second-highest scorer in England’s second tier.

At 6ft 4in, Abraham possesses aerial presence but also comes with devastating pace, while he managed 2.7 shots-per-game with a 45 per cent shooting accuracy.

Swansea have secured the services of the young striker for the upcoming season on a loan deal and, with Fernando Llorente sidelined for pre-season, he has the chance to replicate his goal scoring form in the Premier League.

The Leicester midfield enforcer was brought into the side as a replacement for N’Golo Kante, but only managed to play in 17 games for the champions - but the 20-year-old seized every opportunity.

Idrissa Gueye led the league in tackles last season, with 135 in just 33 appearances, an average of 4.1 per game. Ndidi managed an average of four tackles per game, the second highest in the league.

Tackling bonuses will be a certainty with Ndidi, but the Nigerian also scored two goals in the Premier League, and assisted another.

At £800,000 less than Gueye, whose points total of 161 was just one lower than Paul Pogba’s, Ndidi is available at a bargain price if he produces the aforementioned numbers over a full season.

Few players can say that they have lifted the World Cup as England captain, but Bournemouth’s Lewis Cook is among them.

Fresh off the triumphant U20 World Cup campaign, Cook is in prime position to nail down a starting spot in the heart of Eddie Howe’s midfield this season.

The former Leeds United man impressed whenever he took to the field last year, but his chances were limited due to a long-term injury.

This time around, the 20-year-old will be keen to make up for lost time, and he could prove to be a real bargain at just £7.2m.

Another accomplished England international at youth level, Kasey Palmer is a young man with a big future ahead of him.

Embarking on his second season on loan at Huddersfield, Palmer is about to play Premier League football for the first time, but there’s no reason to assume he’ll be fazed.

Having impressed in the Terriers’ promotion campaign with four goals from 16 starts, the 20-year-old has the chance to continue his progress under the guidance of David Wagner, while offering outstanding value at £7.0m.

Valued at just £7.5m in Sky Sports Fantasy Football, Liverpool’s summer signing Solanke is a relatively cheap option who could become a steal if he can get the game time his talent warrants.

The teenager has made a great first impression for the Reds, having already scored his first goal for the club against Crystal Palace in Hong Kong last week.

With a phenomenal goal-scoring record at U18 level, it appears the former Chelsea man’s step-up to first team football is inevitable.

With Daniel Sturridge’s injury record and Divock Origi’s disappointing return of seven goals from 34 appearances last season, the 19-year-old might get his chance sooner rather than later.

Who will make your team? Draft your side, create and league and invite your mates to play for free here.
