Man United sweat on Ashley Young after he appears to elbow Dusan Tadic

Show/hide article…

Manchester United will learn on Sunday whether Ashley Young will be punished for appearing to elbow Dusan Tadic in their draw with Southampton.

Mid-way through the second half, Young had an altercation with Tadic which may now land him in hot water, with the FA investigating the incident.

As Southampton took a corner, Young was seen to make contact with the Saints forward in what appeared to be a deliberate elbow to the midriff.

Neither the referee or his assistants picked up on the incident at the time, which means the United full-back could land himself a retrospective ban.

The England international has made the wing-back position his own this season, keeping the likes of Luke Shaw out of the side before moving over to the right-hand side to cover for the injured Antonio Valencia.

He has impressed with both his goal contribution and his aptitude in defence and has become one of Jose Mourinho’s most trusted players this term.

With United suffering something of an injury crisis up front, the last thing Mourinho needs is to lose a regular fixture in his back-line.

Ashley Young charged with violent conduct by FA for elbowing Dusan Tadic in Manchester United draw

Show/hide article…

Ashley Young has been charged with violent conduct by the Football Association for elbowing Dusan Tadic during Manchester United’s 0-0 draw with Southampton.

The off-the-ball incident, which went unnoticed by referee Craig Pawson, took place in the second half of Saturday’s Premier League clash as United defended a Southampton corner.

The FA took retrospective action after reviewing the incident by video, as it did with Burnley’s James Tarkowski for elbowing Brighton’s Glenn Murray earlier this month.

Young now has until 5pm today to respond to the charge.

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino said after the game: “I haven’t seen the replay but it is difficult for the referee to see in one second what happened in all different places - but I have to respect the decision.”

Jose Mourinho did not mention the incident in his post-match press conference but did claim Pawson’s decision-making “punished” his side as they stumbled to a third draw in as many league games.

Several United players felt as though they should have been awarded a penalty when the ball struck Maya Yoshida’s hand in the first half but Pawson waved away all protests.

Speaking afterwards, Mourinho insisted it was a “very clear” penalty.

“I watched on the touchline and it looked for me for very clear but 50 metres distance so I give the referee the benefit of the doubt,” he said.

“I know my players so when I see people like Mata almost in hysterics I know, no doubt and then at half-time I watch it. It is a penalty like Rashford against Leicester, Herrera against City.”

Yoshida pleased with reaction

Show/hide article…

The defender hailed the performance of Premier League debutant Alex McCarthy, who had a sizeable hand in Saints’ first clean sheet since October, while also acknowledging the importance of team cohesion as a whole.

But while the point gleaned may serve as a momentary confidence boost, Yoshida is aware that the Crystal Palace clash is just around the corner, with the focus now firmly on greeting the St Mary’s faithful with a first victory of 2018 on Tuesday evening.

“United are always difficult to play against, especially after the way we lost against Spurs,” the Japanese international was quick to assert. "We expected a good reaction and we showed a good spirit.

"We’ve earned a clean sheet, which hasn’t happened in a long time. Maybe we win the game if we take our chances, but we deserved at least a point. I’m happy with that.

"Everyone had to fight, from the top to the goalkeeper. A Premier League debut for Southampton for Alex and he delivered a great performance.

“I try to play simple, not only for the defenders, but to help out our midfield - keeping the ball moving quickly and to play one or two touch. The press was good, but now we move on to Crystal Palace because we have little time to prepare.”

Ashley Young: FA charge Manchester United defender with violent conduct following an incident in draw with Southampton

Show/hide article…

Manchester United’s Ashley Young has been charged with violent conduct after he appeared to elbow Dusan Tadic during the Premier League match against Southampton.

The Football Association decided to take action after footage emerged of Young landing a blow on Tadic’s stomach area during Saturday’s goalless draw at Old Trafford.

An FA statement read: “Young’s charge follows an incident during Saturday’s game against Southampton which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video. He has until 5pm today (31/12/17) to respond.”

Kyle Naughton, the Swansea defender, has been charged with the same offence by the FA following the Swans’ 2-1 win over Watford on Saturday.

The full-back allegedly stamped on striker Stefano Okaka at Vicarage Road on Saturday, though the incident, like Young’s, was missed by the match officials.

McCarthy not yet new number one

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino praised the performance of Alex McCarthy but refused to close the door on a quick first team return for Fraser Forster.

Pellegrino made the surprise decision to leave out Forster after 76 consecutive starts in the Saints goal and replace him with McCarthy for the game against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

As it turned out McCarthy, making his first top flight start since March 2016, kept a clean sheet and Pellegrino explained: “It is the same that when I change some players because I want to give the opportunity to others.

“Now Alex has to show his capacity and quality on the pitch.

“The goalkeeper is a special position and you have to support but most of my players have had his opportunity in the Premier League and nobody can complain about that, just one or two players didn’t play but most of them had the opportunity to play.”

He added: “I think he (McCarthy) was correct, he was good, he was calm, and always showing personality in a difficult game.

“Especially at the end and some moments in the first half it was really difficult but in general the defensive job of the team was really good.”

However, Pellegrino stopped short of saying that McCarthy is his new number one.

“In football nothing is fixed. This is the question,” he said.

“Everything is changing all the time. The reality today will change tomorrow and we have to know this.

“I try to use the moment of the player and the players I feel are better I will give the opportunity and after they have to give this possibility on the pitch and show how they are and their capacity.”

Manchester United’s Ashley Young charged with violent conduct by FA after Southampton draw

Show/hide article…

Ashley Young has been charged with violent conduct by the FA after appearing to elbow Dusan Tadic during Manchester United’s 0-0 draw with Southampton.

The incident was not seen by match officials but was later caught on video and Young has until 5pm on Sunday to respond to the charge.

Jose Mourinho’s side were left frustrated by the Saints as United failed to score at home for the first time in 20 games in all competitions, but the hosts could have been reduced to 10 men had referee Craig Pawson spotted Young’s altercation with Tadic.

Southampton to battle Everton for Theo Walcott as Arsenal accept departure is inevitable

Show/hide article…

Southampton have made their old boy Theo Walcott a priority in the next two transfer windows, although it is expected that Everton will also compete for the signing of the former England international – either on a permanent deal or a loan.

Walcott will be on the bench for Arsenal’s game today against West Bromwich Albion but there is a general acceptance that his time at the club, where he is the longest serving player, is coming to an end and a departure is inevitable either in the January window or next summer.

Southampton want their former player who left as a 16-year-old prodigy in 2006, and there is a confidence that Walcott also would favour a return to St Mary’s where he remains a popular figure.

After this season, the player has one year left on a £120,000-a-week Arsenal contract and, while Southampton would not be able to pay him those kind of wages, there is a hope that an accommodation could be reached. The highest earner at St Mary’s was previously Virgil van Dijk on £65,000-a-week before his transfer to Liverpool which will go through on Monday.

Southampton see real untapped potential in Walcott and are confident that they could reignite his career. He is still relatively young – he is not 29 until March – and has looked after himself well. His goals to minutes on the pitch ratio bears comparison with any of his Arsenal team-mates and his experience and status in the game would be useful in Southampton’s squad that has a young English base.

Man Utd star Ashley Young charged with violent conduct after Southampton draw

Show/hide article…

The Red Devils’ makeshift left-back has been an ever-present in Jose Mourinho’s side this season.

He was impressive once again yesterday but was lucky not to see red after appearing to elbow Saints midfielder Dusan Tadic.

The 32-year-old England international swung his arm at his opponent during a corner-kick in the second half of United’s 0-0 draw at Old Trafford.

Referee Craig Pawson missed the incident but Young was caught on video, and the FA have decided to take action.

Latest on Walcott’s Arsenal future as four Prem clubs eye January move

Show/hide article…

Arsene Wenger may be willing to let Theo Walcott leave Arsenal in January.

Southampton, Everton and West Ham have all enquired about the forward, who is keen to get more first team games.

Gunners boss Wenger is aware Walcott is frustrated at a lack of opportunities at the Emirates and might consider a loan option.

Southampton are keen to bolster their options by taking the England international back to St Mary’s, where he started as a 16-year-old.

Everton are also looking to bring more pace to the squad, while West Ham and Watford are watching developments.

Walcott, 28, has 18 months left on a £140,000-a-week deal and may consider his options again in the summer but a loan move would at least give him a chance to play in a World Cup year.

Arsenal have a lot of strikers in the squad — Danny Welbeck has also struggled to get starts, even with Olivier Giroud out injured — but Wenger will not want to leave himself short with so many games coming up, and that may be the main obstacle in the way of Walcott leaving.

The Gunners are unlikely to do much business in January, and expect Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil to stay until the end of the season.

They have not given up on re-signing Ozil and are still in talks, despite interest from Manchester United and Barcelona.

Manchester City want Sanchez on a free transfer and while Paris Saint-Germain should not be discounted, the Chile star is likely to wait until the end of the season — when the financial package for him will be greater.

Arsenal do want a centre-half, with West Brom’s Jonny Evans and Abdou Diallo of Mainz on their radar, but will be able to wait on potential Sanchez and Ozil replacements until the summer.

One possibility which has not been discounted is the return of forward Lucas Perez, who is on loan at Deportivo La Coruna.

Wenger still likes him and has not closed the door on him as an Arsenal player.

#SaintsFC: Top tweets of 2017

Show/hide article…

As 2017 draws to a close, we look back on our top retweets of the year…

  1. Boufal and Academy tekkers: 2,775 RT, 8,564 Likes

This Saints family affair just sneaks into our top five ahead of Manolo Gabbiadini’s officials-defying brace in the EFL Cup final.

You learn to always keep the cameras rolling when Sofiane Boufal is around at Staplewood and the Moroccan’s keepie-up challenge with the Academy proved exactly why.

The sublime control on both sides of the hedge, the nervy moments in the middle and the team celebrations at the end… it’s no wonder this clip was an instant viral success.

  1. Saint Mario: 2,980 RT, 6,051 Likes

There’s nothing like a good unveiling to set the pulses racing and the notifications into overdrive.

Saints broke their transfer record to secure the signing of Mario Lemina in the summer and suitably breached the top five tweets of the year with the announcement.

The former Juventus midfielder has since gone on to become an early fan favourite – already with a terrace classic to his name - following a series of eye-catching performances. A mix of the Gabon international’s best moments to the tune of “Man’s Not Hot” wasn’t far off making our top 10.

  1. Saints sportsmanship: 3,087 RT, 8,004 Likes

It could not be a top tweet countdown without the EFL Cup final but regrettably, our entry at three was the full-time tweet that no-one in red and white wanted to see.

While many considered Saints worthy winners at Wembley, it was Manchester United who lifted the trophy and our recognition of the Red Devils’ success was well received from all corners.

The congratulatory message to United garnered 3,087 retweets, 8,004 likes and hundreds of comments of support and words of fair-play.

  1. Saints are red, Pompey are blue: 8,335 RT, 11,293 Likes

Who would have imagined that a poem would be one of Saints’ most popular tweets of 2017?

Just under 10 months later, the image of Pierre-Emile Højbjerg cupping his ear is still appearing in Saints fans’ timelines and with good reason. In second, coming in at 8,335 RT and 11,293 likes, “#SaintsFC are Red, Pompey are Blue…”

  1. Taylor Announced: 30,012 RT, 55,380 Likes

Seen by over 2,000,000 eyes, the unveiling of Stuart Taylor’s new contract was Saints’ media event of 2017 and by some distance. From the nonsensical plot, the jaw-dropping drama and the show-stopping finale, it caused something of a stir on the internet.

The tweet – which even spawned a sequel from AS Roma – was retweeted more than 30,000 times, making it not only a very well-deserving winner here but also one of the most shared football tweets of the year. #TaylorAnnounced.

Southampton plot loan move for Arsenal wantaway Theo Walcott

Show/hide article…

Southampton are pushing to re-sign Theo Walcott on an initial loan deal from Arsenal.

Walcott is understood to be open to a move away from the Emirates Stadium having fallen out of favour with boss Arsene Wenger.

The 28-year-old has only featured 13 times in all competitions this season and has found Premier League appearances hard to come by.

Walcott, who joined Arsenal as a 16-year-old in 2006 after impressing in his debut season at Southampton, has a number of options but it is his former club who are leading the race.

The Saints are eager to bolster their attacking ranks and are ready to re-invest the £75million fee they received for defender Virgil van Dijk in January.

Manager Mauricio Pellegrino has identified Walcott as someone who could help his side in the final third and is confident of securing a deal for the wantaway star.

Arsenal however, are bracing themselves for a fresh bid from Manchester City for Alexis Sanchez which could influence their decision on whether or not they let Walcott go.

Everton have also enquired about his availability for loan while Watford, Bournemouth, West Ham, Newcastle United and Swansea City are keeping tabs on his situation as well.

Man United star Young banned for three games after accepting FA charge

Show/hide article…

Manchester United winger Ashley Young has been suspended for three matches after accepting an FA charge of violent conduct.

Young was charged following an incident midway through the second half of Saturday’s 0-0 Premier League draw at Old Trafford.

With Southampton preparing to take a corner, Young appeared to elbow Dusan Tadic in his stomach as the ball flew over - an incident the referee and his assistant missed during the game.

A statement released on Manchester United’s website said: "Ashley Young will be suspended for Manchester United’s next three matches.

“He accepted a violent conduct charge following an off-the-ball incident during yesterday’s game against Southampton, but argued the suspension was excessive. This was rejected by a Regulatory Commission.”

Young will miss United’s forthcoming Premier League games against Everton (January 1), Stoke (January 15) and the FA Cup tie against Derby (January 5).
