Saints sign-up for the Checkatrade Trophy

Show/hide article…

SAINTS have signed up to compete in next season’s Checkatrade Trophy – after what they felt was a highly beneficial first sortie for the club’s under-23s in the competition last campaign.

The Checkatrade, which Saints won as a League One club during its days as the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in 2010, opened its doors to Category One status academies for the first time last season.

Saints were very pleased with the experience for their young players, as Martin Hunter’s side took valuable lessons from playing League One and Two teams on a competitive stage.

After beating Crawley and Colchester United - and drawing with Charlton Athletic, the club’s under-23s reached the knockout stages, before losing out to Reading’s academy on penalties.

And after seeing Josh Sims and Sam McQueen break into the first team, after impressing in the Checkatrade Trophy, Saints decided to accept an invitation to next term’s tournament.

Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Newcastle United and Fulham have joined Saints in the competition as newcomers for the 2017/18 season.

EFL Chief Executive Shaun Harvey said: "I was delighted when EFL Clubs collectively backed the competition following a full and comprehensive review of last season’s pilot format and we can see from the increasing interest from Category One Academies that the Checkatrade Trophy has genuine appeal.

“The competition provides a unique challenge to young players and seasoned professionals alike. I strongly believe players from League One and League Two clubs will look forward to taking on some of the country’s brightest prospects, who will themselves learn a lot from participating in a first team competition.”

Eastleigh sign former Brentford and Wycombe star

Show/hide article…

FORMER Brentford and Wycombe Wanderers wideman Sam Wood has become Eastleigh’s second signing of the week.

Following the arrival of former Premier League winger Mark Yeates, Richard Hill has added yet another new face as the Spitfires eye promotion from the National League next season.

Wood arrives having been released from League Two outfit Wycombe after Chairboys manager Gareth Ainsworth chose not to extend his contract.

The 30-year-old, who signs a two year contract, can play on the wing or as full-back and brings vast experience to the Silverlake Stadium ranks.

The Sidcup-born man started out at Cray Wanderers, who he helped to promotion to the Isthmian League, making nearly 100 appearances before heading to Bromley in 2005.

He won the Supporters’ Player of the Year award in 2006 and the Club Player of the Year in 2007, playing 159 games and scoring 21 goals.

Wood’s performances there attracted interested from league clubs, with Brentford winning the race to his signature, having also had admirers in Gillingham, Charlton and Wolves.

At the Bees he was often a regular but also spent a season on loan at Rotherham United, where he made 26 appearances.

After four years at Brentford, Wood left for Wycombe in 2012, where he scored a stunning 35-yard volley on his debut, which was later named goal of the season.

Playing at either left midfield or left-back, Wood’s display earned him the Fans’ Player of the Season in 2012/13.

He signed a contract extension in 2014, but Ainsworth reluctantly released him this summer.

“Woody’s been here for five years and seen it all in his time with us, from that day we survived relegation at Torquay, to the Wembley play-off final, and the cup adventures in the past couple of years,” Ainsworth said.

“He runs his socks off every time he crosses the white line and is one of those players that fans love to watch.”

Chelsea plan to avoid Liverpool mistake in bid to sign Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Chelsea are determined to remain on good terms with Southampton

Antonio Conte fancies snapping up Van Dijk as a replacement for the departing John Terry.

But they face resistance from Southampton, who are determined to keep the Holland international.

Saints chiefs have informed new manager Mauricio Pellegrino they do not plan to cash in.

However, they could be forced to do a deal if Van Dijk requests a move away from St Mary’s.

Chelsea hope to be in the perfect position to land Van Dijk if Southampton indicate they will sell.
