West Ham vs Southampton Match Thread

Couple of excellent saves from Adrian, especially that one we didn’t even get a corner from.

I’m sure one commentator said it equaled the record for the season so far. The accuracy definitely seems to be getting better, although that could have something to do with Long being on the bench for most of the game.

These last 4 performances have been superb

We won that easily at walking pace bodes very well for a busy season that we continue to play against teams having a bad day.

Great turnout in the pub as well hopefully 8 of us now for Milan

4 great performances on the trot, I reckon that XI we put out today would beat most teams in the league. Cedric and Hojbjerg were awesome but the star man for me again was Redmond - he was key to everything we did going forward and he looks a real bargain buy so far for 10m. If he can add goals to his overall play we’ve got a hell of a player on our hands!

Yeah I was hoping for a goal for him, but his finishing was terrible. I was also hoping for a long goal, but JWP scoring will give him confidence. Another clean sheet from our awesome defence.

Sublime first touch from Tadic for the second goal, took Adrian right out of the equasion. Loved Charlie Austin’s celebration, wagging his finger at the West Ham shower who thought that he wasn’t worth 4 mill because one of his legs “didn’t have any ligaments in it”!! Haha. Where does the pornographer who runs West Ham get his expert medical advice from, the fucking barman at his local ‘gentleman’s club’ in Soho? No ligaments in his leg, hahaha!

Watched the game at my local in West Derby, Liverpool with a mixture of Blues and Reds who all admitted that we were quality in the second half. Was pleased for JWP, took his goal clinically, will do his confidence the world of good.

I really like that self confident swagger that Charlie Austin has about him, you just know that he won’t be bullied by defenders. A mate was up last weekend from Basingstoke, big Saints fan, we went to the local bookies for him to put a bet on the gee gee’s, he put a tenner on Charlie for the golden boot in the Prem this year at 150-1, said he couldn’t resist it at that price. Tried to persuade me to do the same but i wasn’t brave enough! I wonder what the odds will be on Monday! You never know, it could happen, providing he stays fit! After all, it’s quite a handicap, playing up front in the premiership without any ligaments in your leg!

was it your best mate who was visiting?

I thought he was wagging his finger at Bertrand, not the crowd. Something like “I told you if you put it in that area, I’d score”

Quality 2nd half that, very happy man this evening.

First game of the season for me and what a good choice it was. First 40 minutes or so were boring as hell with very little between the two teams, but once we scored and the confidence got flowing, we always looked like we had another goal in us when going forward. West Ham were utterly crap and whilst concerns about relegation might well seem ‘knee-jerk’ at this stage, they really do look bang in trouble. Hopeless and easy to defend against going forward, with their own defence having more holes in it than a colendar.

As for the Olympic stadium - it’s a wonderful piece of architecture and a beautiful stadium but it’s simply not meant for football. Fans are too spread out and there’s no atmosphere whatsoever. I’m not just talking about the ground emptying with 10 minutes to go - even in the buildup and at 0-0 you could hear a pin drop in there. I’d wager it’ll be a massive handicap for West Ham throughout the seaosn - nice, big, carpet-like pitch, probably very nice facilities for the away team and the complete lack of any sort of unified, coherent, galvanising home support. Just way too nice a place for opposing teams to visit. It feels like a neutral ground, no matter how many gimmicks, bells, whistles and pre-match build-up compliation videos they have at their disposal.

Getting out of the stadium was a funny experience as well, with crowd-control stewards in hi-vis jackets around Westfield penning people in with ‘Stop’ and ‘Go’ signs. Frankly, there’s a sterile, airport-like weirdness to the whole area even without a Premier League club playing at what is a completely bizzare location, so wandering there and back felt incredibly strange and I can’t imagine many West Ham fans will take much of a liking to it throughout the next year.

Have just watched MotD2 - excellent goals, especialy the first two. JWP’s finish was decent as well. You could say that MotD provided a coverage of two halves; the highlights themselves showed a fair few West Ham attacks after our second goal (none of which led to much), interspersed with a couple of Saints attacks, one of which did indeed lead to a goal. Over to the studio, and both Kilbane and Savage were far more interested in saying how well we’d played - we also got to see a few decent attacks that hadn’t made it into the highlights. All a question of balance, no doubt.

In the end, though, who gives a fuck? That was an excellent win, we played some great football and we’d have beaten plenty of far better teams than West Ham playing llike that.

I love the heat map MOTD produced for our full backs. On the image shown, our goal is at the bottom of the screen. They’re basically playing as wingers. Pretty advanced wingers at times.

Small world, Nottarf. I’m also a West Derby resident. We should do away beers with Bazza.

I’ve been reading that Wet Spam played sampled recordings of “Come On You Irons” over the PA to generate some atmosphere :lou_surprised:

That can’t be true, can it?

Edit…I mean during the game.

Yes, TV Taters mentioned it several times (and kept saying “You shouldn’t have to do that” Great Stadium but lousy for football etc)

Right - who wants to earn some FREE money?

Just go onto KUMB and introduce yourself as an old Saints Fan. Explain the issues we had back when we moved to SMS and couldn’t win a game.

Explain the White Witch and how our fortunes turned around instantly. Then say you are the White Witch’s Agent. Charge them 5 Grand (For our (my) Milan Beer Kitty and send your Granny with a pointed stick

Just spoke to the Boss, who was at the game after being offered tickets late on Friday: “Wish I had not bothered”

“First 40 minutes were so cagey it was a bit dull, but it was very even. When you scored - great goal by the way - we just fell apart. The second half you just tore us apart and it was like we did not have anyone who knew how to defend as a team. Austin dragged our back four everywhere and thats why Redmond and Tadic had a field day. I knew VVD was great but Romeu - wow - I had no idea he was that good! Battered us completely, it really should have been much worse”.

As he is recommending me for a permanent role here (my fixed contract runs out in 2 months) I lamely offered a “sorry your afternoon was wasted.” His reply “Oh get stuffed, you loved it and rightly so”. :lou_lol:

This is true…no word of a lie…the White Witch of St Mary’s is my Sister-in-Law…Cerridwen Dragonoak Connelly is her sort of name but in truth I’ve only met her once. She did phone once to ask if I knew the whereabouts of my brother (her husband)…but I couldn’t help her…haven’t seen him for more than 15 years. Surely I sould have a badge for this Pap.

Is it too early to say that Wanyama is now competing with Chambers and Lovren for the title of the player we’ve missed the least?
