Mauricio Pellegrino admits next five games ‘fundamental’ to Southampton survival

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino has acknowledged that the next five games are “fundamental” amid the ongoing support of the club’s board following high-level meetings this week with majority owner Gao Jisheng.

Chairman Ralph Krueger and 20 per cent shareholder Katharina Liebherr visited Gao and his daughter Nelly in China and together watched Sunday’s 2-0 defeat against Liverpool that has pushed the club back into the Premier League’s relegation zone.

There is still a feeling, though, that there has been an improvement in performances since January ahead of a looming sequence of games against teams in and around them in the Premier League. Southampton face West Bromwich Albion for a place in the FA Cup quarter-final on Saturday before matches against Burnley, Stoke City, Newcastle United and West Ham United that are regarded as an opportunity to pull clear of danger and could be pivotal to Pellegrino’s future.

Pellegrino’s position has been under internal scrutiny and, while the 3-2 away win against West Brom was crucial in easing the immediate pressure, the wider league context of just two wins since the end of October is alarming.

Lemina ready for West Brom trip

Show/hide article…

MARIO Lemina is fit and ready to play against West Bromwich Albion in the FA Cup fifth-round after suffering from dizziness in last weekend’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool.

The Gabon international was withdrawn from the Premier League loss just before the hour mark after complaining of feeling dizzy.

Saints have assessed the combative midfielder this week and he’s been cleared to play at The Hawthorns on Saturday.

“Mario is okay,” manager Mauricio Pellegrino said. “He felt a little bit dizzy during the game, but it is not a problem.”

Shane Long, meanwhile, is a doubt after picking up a leg injury. Saints will decide whether the striker is fit enough for the Baggies trip on Friday.

“The only one we will decide tomorrow is Shane Long. He’s the only player that is a doubt,” Pellegrino added.

“He’s had some problem in his leg.”

Pellegrino: Saints ‘need’ Gabbiadini

Show/hide article…

MAURICIO Pellegrino insists Manolo Gabbiadini is a player Saints “need” but has urged the Italian to be better “prepared”.

Gabbiadini has netted three times this season, but has not reached the heights of last term, when he burst onto the scene with six goals in four games.

The 26-year-old, who signed from Napoli in a £14.6m switch last January, has started four games in 22 in all competitions since firing a brace against Newcastle in October.

“The thing for the player is you have to be really well prepared,” Pellegrino said.

“Our reaction on the pitch is about preparation before the game. It’s about what you did in your past, how you prepare every single week.

“The attitude is a preview of the preparation to move to the action and this is the most important at this level.

“Manolo has to be prepared. He played against Spurs at home and he didn’t have many chances but, for me, he’s a really important player for the club. We need him.

“He’s working fine. He’s working hard but sometimes I have made decisions for the best of the team.”

Gabbiadini could get another chance to shine tomorrow at West Bromwich Albion in the FA Cup fifth-round, with Pellegrino considering his options in attack.

“It’s one possibility, but I repeat that I am thinking it’s an option in attack, Manolo is one of these,” he said.

Pellegrino also revealed that he’d been impressed with how new £19.2m striker Guido Carrillo, who signed from Monaco last month, has been settling in at St Mary’s.

While the 26-year-old is yet to score in 217 minutes of football, Pellegrino has valued the Argentine’s contribution.

He said: “Obviously the goal and the chance for the striker are the most important things to complete the job of a striker.

“But you realise quickly when someone wants to help the team, we’re looking for this, and he’s done that in the last two games.

“I think obviously the striker needs help from everyone to create and convert chances.

“And we also need everyone to defend. It’s the same equation.”

Pellegrino: We’ll do everything we can

Show/hide article…

Saints head to The Hawthorns for a fifth-round clash, with a place in the quarter-finals of this season’s competition at stake.

That would put Pellegrino’s men one win away from a trip to Wembley, in the semi-finals, and the manager wants his players to take full advantage of their promising start in the FA Cup.

“The FA Cup is an amazing competition,” he said. "We will have in 90 minutes, or 180 minutes, the possibility to move forward.

“If we win, amazing, but if we draw we will have a second leg here at home and we have to try to be really well prepared.”

Pellegrino added: "We have to translate everything on the pitch. We have to talk by action on the pitch and this is the most important thing.

“The competition is really hard, but I think we are well prepared. It’s an amazing competition, we want to move forward and we will do everything to try to win.”

Saints have beaten West Brom twice already this season, most recently under a fortnight ago, when they triumphed 3-2 in the Premier League, at The Hawthorns.

“When you know your opponent really well. I think the manager will try to adjust some situations,” he said.

“We try to keep going in the good feelings, but little by little it’s tighter because the level of knowledge is higher, so we have to be focused.”

With Southampton’s allocation of tickets having sold out, Pellegrino is buoyed by the prospect of another fantastic following at The Hawthorns, following on from the supporters’ memorable backing there earlier this month.

“Hopefully we can give them a good performance on the pitch, we can feel the energy from outside, and together we will be stronger,” he said.

Slattery at the double

Show/hide article…

With one Premier League Cup fixture remaining, Saints are in pole position, but face a difficult away trip to Blackburn to round off their group games.

Slattery’s brace takes his seasonal tally to five, a return which the the teenage midfielder is keen to improve on during the remainder of the season.

“Yeah definitely, it is always nice to get a couple of goals and to help the team with the win,” the 19-year-old said. "Obviously, the most important thing was the three points.

"I always aim to put my free-kicks it in to a dangerous area. If someone gets a touch and it goes in, or it goes straight through it is a goal either way.

"I was obviously in a position to get the hat-trick, thought I might have had a penalty shout in the second half but the ref didn’t give it. I want to score goals more regularly.

"Me and Radhi have had a few chats over the last few weeks, working on bits of my game that I need to improve - defensively and out of possession, and it is starting to kick in now.

“All the boys are feeling confident after the Watford win, and that adds to the few recent wins. We need to maintain that.”

Pellegrino prepares Saints for ‘fundamental’ run

Show/hide article…

MAURICIO Pellegrino has labelled Saints’ impending Premier League matches as “fundamental” in their scrap for survival.

However, the 46-year-old boss is not preparing to simply sacrifice Saints’ fifth round FA Cup tie at West Bromwich Albion tomorrow, despite the vital games looming large on the horizon.

Instead, Pellegrino knows a victory, and progress to the quarter-final of the competition, can only help his side’s mentality heading into the Premier League dogfight.

Saints’ “fundamental” matches include a trip to Burnley, followed by a home game against fellow relegation zone outfit Stoke and then trips to bottom-half rivals Newcastle, Swansea and West Ham.

“I think we’ve got plenty of time to think about that. We are conscious that every single week we’ve got a game one at a time to prepare,” Pellegrino said.

“We’ve been working very well for this game, hopefully we’ll have a good game.

“Yes, fundamental games, and obviously every single game will be crucial,” he added.

“But you can’t think about the big picture all the time, you’ve got to think about refocusing our job day by day.

“You’ve got to be brave in the spirit to help to approach all those moments.”

Pellegrino admits he will tinker with his side at The Hawthorns tomorrow, but is adamant he is taking the competition seriously.

Mario Lemina suffered from a bout of dizziness during Saints’ 2-0 defeat to Liverpool weekend, but is ready for the Baggies trip.

The Gabon international was withdrawn from the St Mary’s loss just before the hour mark after complaining of feeling dizzy.

Shane Long is a doubt due to a leg injury, but Pellegrino stated that the striker will be assessed today before a final decision is made.

“We want to move forward to the next round, but also it can help us to improve as a team,” Pellegrino said.

“To introduce some players that didn’t play too much in the recent games.

“It can help us to believe more in our improvements since January.

“For those aspects it will be important to play seriously, try to win the game, try to do our best, and any of both teams got nothing to lose. You have to go forward because it’s like a final. “We’ve got this possibility and it’s amazing.”
