FA Cup betting, tips and odds as favourites Man City eye last eight

Show/hide article…

It’s FA Cup weekend with eight ties spread over four days and we’ve got a game-by-game betting guide as the remaining teams eye a place in the quarter-finals.

Manchester City are favourites to lift the trophy at 2/1 - and now just 14/1 to deliver the Champions league, Premier League and League Cup to keep it company in the cabinet.

Fresh from a convincing midweek win in Basle, they make a short trip to Wigan while the next stop for Tottenham, who drew with Serie A giants Juventus in Italy on Tuesday, head for Spotland’s less -than-perfect pitch to take on Rochdale. The glamour games just keep on coming…

Leicester have already beaten Sheffield United this season – 4-1 in the League Cup – when Chris Wilder made a host of changes to the side he usually send out as they fight for a top-six finish in the Championship. They’re three points and two places away right now so expect more tinkering from Wilder. Foxes boss Puel could make a change of his own by reintroducing Riyad Mahrez to the starting XI now he’s no longer AWOL, the Man City ‘story is behind him’ and he’s ‘training with a smile’. Sky Bet have boosted the Algerian in the score-win double to 7/2.

Injuries, suspension and the fact he has three on-loan Chelsea defenders, who won’t face their parent club, means Nigel Adkins could be without as many as 11 first-teamers when he takes his Hull side to Stamford Bridge. So we won’t be tempted by the 18/1 on offer for the Tigers to spring a shock - several firms have Chelsea at 2/9. Forget the tired old one-game-at-a-time cliche, the Blues will have an eye on next week’s Champions league clash with Barcelona and with Antonio Conte saying Alvaro Morata needs minutes to get him ready for the big one, if he starts, have a look at the 3/1 he scores two or more or Paddy Power’s 13/1 (unlucky for Hull), he scores a hat-trick.

Smiling Swansea boss Carlos Carvalhal has tasted defeat just once in 11 games while steering his side out of the relegation zone after being booted out of Sheffield Wednesday on Christmas Eve. His replacement at Hillsborough, Jos Luhukay, has also lost just once (in nine games) ahead of this cup clash. They’re well matched as despite the managers’ impressive records, Wednesday have won just one of their last six league games at home while the Swans, in their last half dozen on the road, have beaten only Watford. This has the feel of a proper cup tie and we’ll be on the top-flight team to edge it. Swansea are 13/10 to win and 11/4 to win by one goal.

Coventry have been kind to us with their cup run, coming in at a decent price against Stoke in round three and as a 10/1 correct score winner when they beat MK Dons 1-0 three weeks ago. Those results sat nicely in a run of eight games where they conceded just five goals but after following up the MK Dons win with a 3-1 victory over Cambridge United, they’ve lost three on the bounce and shipped six goals. Brighton on the other hand are unbeaten in four and no better than 2/5 with the Sky Blues 10/1. Brighton boss Chris Hughton will make changes with a relegation battle ahead and is set to start record signing Jurgen Locadia is set to start. He’s 4/1 for the opener on his debut.

It’s only a fortnight since Southampton ended a long winless run in the Premier League by beating West Brom by the odd goal in five at The Hawthorns. The Baggies shipped three goals to Man City the game before that and three to Chelsea in the one straight after and it’s 13/2 (Coral) they let in three or more again.

It’s been a while since Huddersfield went into a game with a spring in their step but the 7/1 shots might just fancy their chances of upsetting the odds against Man United. They’ve already beaten them in Yorkshire earlier in the season, they hammered form-team Bournemouth last weekend while the Red Devils’ last two away games have ended in disappointment for Jose Mourinho – at Tottenham and Newcastle. Rajiv van La Parra, who wants to play for a ‘bigger team’ has scored in his last two games and he’s 7/1 at any time.

They needed a replay to see off Newport but Tottenham haven’t lost to a team from the third tier or lower since Tiffany was at No 1 in the UK singles chart with I Think We’re Alone Now but we won’t be running just as fast as we can to get in front of the telly for Sunday’s only Cup clash. It’s got mismatch written all over it with the League One basement boys 22/1 to see off Mauricio Pochettino’s men. Slightly longer odds but more appealing is a 6-0 win for the visitors. You can back that score at 33/1 with a few bookies or 5-0 is 14/1.

It’s a repeat of the 2013 final, and the quarter-final the following year, and another Wigan win on Monday night is 20/1. No thanks. They’re flying high in League One but, in recent weeks, have been much better on the road than in front of their own fans. City are no better than 2/11 but are 8/13 to be winning at half-time and full-time or 13/10 to win minus two goals on the handicap. Ilkay Gundogan scored a couple in Switzerland in midweek and he’s 10/3 with Bet365 at any time. Wigan’s top scorer and former Man United youngster Nick Powell is 9/2.

West Brom vs Southampton, FA Cup team news, odds and stats

Show/hide article…

Ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup action, Sportsmail will be providing you with all you need to know about every key fixture, with team news, provisional squads, betting odds and Opta stats. Here is all the information you need for West Brom’s home clash with Southampton.

Striker Shane Long will face a late fitness test before Southampton’s FA Cup fifth-round clash at West Brom on Saturday.

Long picked up a leg problem in training and is a doubt to feature at the Hawthorns.

Mario Lemina has recovered from dizzy spells and will be available for selection.

The last three times these sides have met in the FA Cup the tie has gone to a replay, with Southampton progressing on the last two occasions.

Southampton have won their last three meetings with West Brom in all competitions, including a 3-2 win at the Hawthorns earlier this month.

The last time a Premier League team won away against another Premier League team twice in the same calendar month was Man City at Swansea in September 2016.

The Saints haven’t reached the FA Cup quarter-finals since the 2004-05 campaign, losing each of their last four fifth-round ties.

West Brom have lost their last three games in a row, conceding exactly three goals in each game, this after winning three of the previous four (D1).

Jay Rodriguez has scored seven goals in his last 10 FA Cup appearances.

Tottenham’s Harry Kane once took a bouncing Cristiano Ronaldo penalty

Show/hide article…

Harry Kane once volleyed a penalty à la Cristiano Ronaldo but it did not end well for the Tottenham striker.

Ronaldo caused a stir on Wednesday night when he scored from a bouncing spot-kick during Real Madrid’s 3-1 Champions League victory over PSG.

The Real icon slammed his left foot into the ground so forcefully that the ball bounced up off the spot and into the air before he fired past the goalkeeper.

Had the referee noticed the ball was moving when Ronaldo hit it, the goal would have been disallowed and the penalty retaken. But he didn’t and it wasn’t.

Ronaldo’s penalty technique — which former Manchester United team-mate Rio Ferdinand suggested was deliberate — was very unusual, but we have seen something similar before.

Kane hit a bouncing ball after Spurs were awarded a penalty in their Premier League game at Southampton last season.

Unfortunately, Kane’s effort ballooned high over the crossbar, suggesting he had probably not intended to make the ball jump prior to kicking it.

Kane’s embarrassment was offset by the fact Tottenham cruised to a 4-1 win.

‘If there’s any NFL teams looking for a kicker in the future, have a look at my game,’ Kane, who scored from open play in the match, joked on Twitter later that day.

Fulham face ‘massive’ test for Premier League promotion, says Targett

Show/hide article…

Fulham play six of the top eight teams in the Championship in the space of three weeks — and Matt Targett believes this run will show if they can mount a serious push for automatic promotion.

Slavisa Jokanovic’s side are fifth after going unbeaten in nine Championship matches and host second-placed Aston Villa on Saturday.

Fulham, who won five League games in a row before drawing at Bolton last weekend, travel to Bristol City next Wednesday before a home game against runaway leaders Wolves. They then play three more of their promotion rivals: Derby away, Sheffield United at home and Preston away.

Confidence is high at Craven Cottage and Targett says Fulham are ready to make a statement to the rest of the division as they bid to return to the top flight after a four-year absence.

“The next six games are massive against teams around us,” said the on-loan Southampton defender. “I guess the run will decide where we end up. If we do well in that then I think we are going to be right up there. If we take a lot of points from these games it will send a massive statement out to the rest of the League that we are serious and we want to get back to the Premier League. It will be tough but it is exciting. Everyone here wants to give everything to get the club back into the Premier League.”

Villa have won their last seven League games, thanks in part to the excellent form of Robert Snodgrass, with the on-loan West Ham winger scoring four goals in that run. Captain John Terry returned last month after breaking a metatarsal in November and will be playing in west London for the first time since leaving Chelsea last summer.

The game is the clash of the two form teams in the Championship and Targett says Fulham are looking forward to the challenge. He said: “On paper Villa have got a Premier League squad, so it will be a tough game. But we are in great form and are at home and we need to make that advantage count.”

Butterfield proud of U18s’ progression

Show/hide article…

A 2-0 home victory over Norwich last week extended such run, with first-year pairing Kornelius Hansen and Enzo Robise finding the net, in the absence of Butterfield’s more regular forward line.

A host of injuries and Under-23s call-ups will once again restrict squad selection as Saints travel to Aston Villa tomorrow, but Butterfield is confident his teenage cohort can still produce.

“We’ve not come up against Villa yet this season, but they’ll be a similar threat to most sides in this league,” the former Saints defender said.

"We can only control what we do. It is another chance for the boys to maintain this momentum and form, and we’re looking for another positive performance.

"This group are organised, and they all understand each other’s roles. There is a certain togetherness and confidence which is a consequence of good results.

"Hard work is a given, but they’re also open to improving. No one is the complete package at this age, but all of these young lads take their development seriously.

"We really emphasise the quality and application in training, so that when you’re called upon, you are ready. Credit to the first years, they’ve had to be patient but opportunities are now arising.

“Me and Craig [Fleming] are both proud of what these young players are achieving!”
