Southampton sign Caceres to strengthen defence

Show/hide article…

Southampton have announced the signing of Martin Caceres on a free transfer.

The 29-year-old defender moves to St Mary’s on a deal until June after leaving Juventus at the end of 2015/16.

Caceres, who will wear the number 12 shirt, has 68 caps for Uruguay and has also played at Barcelona and Sevilla. He strengthens a Southampton defence recently hit by an ankle injury to Virgil van Dijk .

"In a tough situation for us, losing Virgil to injury, he [Caceres] will bring experience, talent and character,” Les Reed, the Southampton executive director of football, told southamptonfc.com. “He has played in the biggest of games, and will provide depth to our squad.”

See: Caceres - This was the best option for me

After the EFL Cup final on 26 February, Southampton are next in Premier League action on 4 March, when they travel to Watford.

Caceres joins after Manolo Gabbiadini and Mouez Hassen were signed by Southampton in the January transfer window.

Southampton sign former Barcelona and Juventus defender Martin Caceres

Show/hide article…

Southampton have completed the signing of former Barcelona defender Martin Caceres on a short-term deal.

The Uruguay international was a free agent, released by Italian giants Juventus in the summer, and has put pen to paper on a contract until the end of the season.

Caceres, who turns 30 in April, told the club’s official website: 'I am very happy to have signed for what is an important club in English football. I am looking forward to getting started with my new teammates.

‘Of all of the options that I had, I think that the best option for me was to come to Southampton. I am extremely happy to have joined this club.’

The centre back, with 68 international caps to his name, won La Liga and the Champions League with Barcelona but actually only made 23 appearances for the club between 2008 and 2011.

Spells with Sevilla and Juventus followed, both loan and permanent, and Caceres won five Serie A titles during his time in Turin.

Having been disrupted by injuries during different times in his career - he missed the final three months of last season and has not played since February 2016 - Caceres could, intriguingly, make his debut in Southampton’s League Cup final against Manchester United on Sunday at Wembley.

The Saints were keen for defensive reinforcements after Jose Fonte left for West Ham and Virgil van Dijk was ruled out perhaps until the end of the season.

Southampton sign former Juventus defender Martin Caceres on short-term deal

Show/hide article…

Southampton have signed former Juventus defender Martin Caceres on a deal until the end of the season.

The Saints have been desperately searching for defensive cover after the departure of Jose Fonte and long-term injury suffered by Virgil van Dijk.

Caceres joins having been a free agent since the end of last season, where he was released by Serie A champions Juve.

He has passed two long days of medical assessment to secure the deal with Southampton, for whom he will look to make his debut in the EFL Cup final against Manchester United.

Speaking about his move, Caceres said: “I am very happy to have signed for what is an important club in English football. I am looking forward to getting started with my new teammates.

“Of all of the options that I had, I think that the best option for me was to come to Southampton. I am extremely happy to have joined this club.”

Uruguayan international Caceres, 29, has formerly represented both Barcelona and Sevilla in La Liga - and was even a Champions League winner with the former.

Saints executive director of football Les Reed said: “Recruiting players in January is an extremely difficult task, and this year was a particularly challenging market for centre-backs.

“We set out to recruit a high-calibre player in that position during the January window so I am delighted that, following extensive work and persistence, we have now been able to sign Martin Caceres on a short-term contract.

“Martin is a great talent, who has played at the very top level and won many trophies and medals. He is a very experienced international player for Uruguay and has enjoyed notable success with both Juventus and Barcelona.

"In a tough situation for us, losing Virgil to injury, he will bring experience, talent and character. He has played in the biggest of games, and will provide depth to our squad.

"Two days of extensive medicals and tough fitness tests have further demonstrated his desire and positive personality. I know Martin can’t wait to start playing again. We welcome him to St Mary’s, and his family into our family.”

Caceres will take the No.12 shirt at St Mary’s until the end of the season.

Southampton sign Caceres as Crystal Palace miss out

Show/hide article…

Crystal Palace have missed out on another transfer target as Southampton confirm the signing of Martin Caceres until the end of the season.

Sam Allardyce confirmed his interest in the former Juventus centre-back at the end of January, but Claude Puel has won the race for his signature as a replacement for Jose Fonte.

Virgil van Dijk’s long-term ankle injury compounded the January exit of the Southampton captain but the signing of Caceres provides some much-needed experience.

The 29-year-old, who has been without a club since leaving the Italian champions, reportedly also turned down interest from AC Milan and insists a move to the English south coast was the right choice.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Caceres said: "I am very happy to have signed for what is an important club in English football. I am looking forward to getting started with my new team-mates.

“Of all of the options that I had, I think that the best option for me was to come to Southampton. I am extremely happy to have joined this club.”

Caceres is unlikely to be able to slot straight into the team given he has not played since last February after undergoing surgery on a torn right Achilles tendon.

The former Barcelona and Sevilla defender could therefore miss out on the EFL Cup final against Manchester United on February 26.

Cáceres: I will give my all for this club

Show/hide article…

The experienced defender arrives at Saints on a deal until the end of the season, and says he’s extremely grateful to the club for the opportunity to experience the Premier League.

Cáceres hopes he can make a valuable contribution between now and the end of the season, as Saints look for a successful end to their Premier League campaign and a win at Wembley in the EFL Cup final.

“It was a difficult decision to come from a league like the Italian one from Juventus, but I wanted to play football here in England,” he said.

“Southampton opened the door to me playing English football and I’m very grateful for that. I will give my all for the club in the shirt.

“I want to be able to bring something to my new teammates and help push as hard as we can until the end of the season.

“We’ve got a final at the end of next week and obviously I want to help my teammates try to win a trophy and finish as high as we possibly can in the Premier League table.

“For me, I think it’s the best league in the world. Now I have the possibility to play here and I’m going to enjoy it to the maximum.”

Cáceres visited Staplewood Campus last week, and says his first impressions of Southampton have been extremely positive.

“The training ground is wonderful and my first impression of the club is very good indeed,” the 29 year-old added.

“I spent some time at the training ground last week doing some technical work, and above all my first impression of the club is very good.”

Saints sign Caceres

Show/hide article…

SAINTS have confirmed the signing of free agent Martin Caceres on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

The former Juventus and Barcelona man joins up with Claude Puel’s squad in time for their pre-Wembley training camp to Spain, which they leave for tomorrow as they prepare for the League Cup final.

The experienced defender, who has had numerous injury problems during his career, went through “two days of extensive medicals and tough fitness tests” to prove he was fit enough to play for Saints, according to executive director of football Les Reed.

Caceres’ move to St Mary’s was initially delayed because of the sudden death of his brother last weekend, which saw him travel home to Uruguay to be with his family.

But he now makes the move to the south coast on a short-term deal, and will wear the number 12 shirt for the remainder of the campaign.

The Uruguayan international, who has 68 caps to his name, joins Saints after leaving Serie A giants Juventus at the end of the 2015/16 campaign.

He has also played for Spanish clubs Barcelona and Sevilla during his career, winning La Liga and the Champions League during his time at the Camp Nou.

With Juventus, the defender won Serie A on five occasions, as well as winning the Coppa Italia twice and finishing runners-up in the Champions League in 2015.

Caceres said: “I am very happy to have signed for what is an important club in English football. I am looking forward to getting started with my new teammates.

“Of all of the options that I had, I think that the best option for me was to come to Southampton. I am extremely happy to have joined this club.”

Southampton transfer news: Saints secure signing of former Juventus defender Martin Caceres

Show/hide article…

Southampton have bolstered their defence with the signing of former Juventus centre-back Martin Caceres until the end of the season.

The Uruguay international has been without a club since leaving Italian champions Juve at the end of last term and joins a Saints side who were lacking cover at the back.

Virgil van Dijk’s long-term ankle injury compounded the January exit of captain Jose Fonte but the signing of Caceres provides some much-needed experience for boss Claude Puel.

The 29-year-old reportedly turned down interest from AC Milan and Crystal Palace and insists a move to the English south coast was the right choice.

The former Barcelona and Sevilla defender could therefore miss out on the EFL Cup final against Manchester United on February 26.
