RSD: Should we eat dog?

This has been all over the news for the past couple of days.

Is dog just another meat that we’d be hypocritical to turn our nose up at, or is the dog a specific case?

Should we eat dog?

Should we get on our high horse because others do?

An annual dog meat festival in south-west China has begun, amid uproar on the part of animal rights activists.

About 10,000 dogs will be slaughtered for their meat at the Lychee and Dog Meat Festival in Yulin in Guangxi province on Sunday and Monday to mark the summer solstice, state media said.

One retired school teacher from Tianjin hit the headlines when she purchased dozens of dogs to save them.

Residents and vendors in Yulin say the animals are killed in a humane way.

Activists say the killing is cruel and an online campaign to ban the festival has been signed by more than 3.8 million people so far and the campaign has attracted considerable support this year from celebrities both domestic and foreign.

Celebrities including British comedian Ricky Gervais have spoken out on Twitterwith the hashtag #StopYuLin2015. Chinese pop star Chen Kun and actor Yang Mi have said they are joining the campaign on micro blogging site Weibo.

And Chinese actor Fan Bingbing and others posted a video online against the festival.

![null|624x351](upload://7Ulq5Dyg3WYJXL2TxGR4DtwtUOs.jpeg)The festival began a few years ago according to state media.

The tradition of eating dog meat dates back four or five hundred years in China, South Korea and other countries, as it is believed to ward off the heat of the summer months, according to state news agency Xinhua.

However, this festival began in recent years, Xinhua said.

City officials have distanced themselves from the gathering. “Some residents of Yulin have the habit of coming together to eat lychees and dog meat during the summer solstice,” the city’s news office wrote on Weibo.

“The ‘summer solstice lychee and dog meat festival’ is a commercial term, the city has never [officially] organised a ‘dog meat festival’,” it added.

As in recent years, some animal lovers resorted to buying some of the dogs in order to rescue them.

Yang Xiaoyun, retired school teacher, paid about 7,000 yuan ($1,100; £710) to save 100 dogs on Saturday.

The BBC’s Celia Hatton in Beijing says this kind of dispute puts the government in a really difficult position. The glorified consumption of dog meat generates a lot of negative foreign media reports, embarrassing the authorities. Also, the dog meat industry has been accused of many underhand tactics, including the illegal capture of family pets to use as food.

But at the same time, the government is wary of the increasingly sophisticated animal rights movement, she adds. Animal rights activists in China have formed a cohesive network on social media that extends to many foreign animal welfare groups. China’s leaders do not want to encourage such a movement amid a wider crackdown on civil disturbance of any kind.

Should we stop eating beef because the Hindus find it offensive? Just saying

And what about the cats?

Nothing said in this post constitutes my acceptance of the practice highlighted by the lowly Butler.

If people wish to eat dogs, let them eat dogs. The only animals that should not be eaten are endangered species and humans, the rest are fair game. They just need to be farmed properly and with as much consideration as you can given that eventually you’ll shove a bolt through its head or slit it’s throat.

Yeah! My policy for meats is that I only eat animals that would eat me, if they could, so therefore it is quid pro quo + fair for all parties. Consequently, I don’t ever eat beef, lamb or chicken, but i do eat dogs, lions & rats.

NO FECKING WAY!

A bit harsh going from Man’s Best Friend to Dish Of The Day methinks.

Best friend? Get a grip.

Was having a similar discussion the other day with some friends. A couple of them have become vegetarians recently. I have considered not eating some animals recently, pork, perhaps beef and lamb. They said I should eat all or none and if I eat any, I should accept eating dog as well.

The way I see it, dog have personalities, complex emotions and loyalty, therefore should not be eaten. Whereas chickens are just dumb fucks that work on instinct just clucking around eating grain. Chickens don’t know what’s happening from one moment to the next and can get in my bargain bucket.

I’m not sure I would go as far as decribing a dog as having “complex emotions”. And besides, any animal if living as a pet can show loyalty and pigs are as bright as dogs (probably, I’ve not tested them but that’s what people say).

Dogs do have complex emotions. Any dog owner will back me up on this.

I’m with Tokes.

Dogs are smarter than most of those other animals, and more useful than most too. Not something I’d consider putting on my plate under normal circumstances.

Disagree, dogs only seem smarter cos they’re kiss-ass & suck-up & do what they’re told. Cats are equally know what you want from them, but cats do not give a fuck, cos cats is more bro.

How much personality does an animal have to have before it gets an a la carte reprieve?

lol fuck you! bears is smarter than even i.e. the average bear!

It would have to have enough personality to get away with licking its own balls and then licking the owners face.

Can you clarify what you mean by complex emotions then please?

I wouldn’t eat cat either. Dogs guard your house. Cat wouldn’t give a clean fuck. Not looking after your bros is not very bro, bro.

TBF Fatso, Toke’s dogs do have complex emotions that touch on the rights and wrongs of inter-species sex, and whether they should feel guilt for enjoying what their owner does to them.

I once heard that due to centuries of selective breeding the dog is the only animal that will follow a human’s gaze. Without command or instruction, they will instinctively follow their owners line of sight to see i.e. who their owner is dogging/thinking of dogging.

If that’s true, it does suggest that there is something special between man and a potential pot poodle / domesticated canine.

Personally I don’t think we should eat dog, but where it has been done for centuries (I don’t know if this is the case in China as I’ve heard conflicting reports), then it is difficult to lecture about not eating one animal when we’re happy to eat others.
