The van Gaal Situation

Now whether you think he’s a great manager or not and I’m sure that most people would love him to stay just for the Comedy value, is any else slightly disturbed by the handling of the van Gaal situation by United?

I mean this is the man’s life and livelihood and they are, basically, taking a punt (if rumours are to be believed) on Mourinho being able to turn them around!

Maybe the top people should be looking at the purchases that they have made since Ferguson left??

Daniel Taylor has got a piece in the Guardian today which reckons the players were close to mutiny.

He’s just been “sacked” BTW,

Thanks for the article Pap, I think the second paragraph echoes my disquiet :-

For all Louis van Gaal’s faults, it was certainly a low stunt for that kind of information to be leaked while his suit was still damp from the spray of champagne. Van Gaal’s diminished popularity can probably be judged by the beery chants of “José Mourinho” on Wembley Way, as well as various stops along the Metropolitan line, throughout Saturday night, but no manager deserves that kind of treatment. Two have now been in this position since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement three years ago and Van Gaal, like David Moyes, found out through the people he called “my friends in the media”. Except, of course, he didn’t say it with any friendliness in his voice.

My mate reckons that Ferguson told An Ex-Player who Told Him, that if Van Gaal left this summer his replacement would be Pochettino nailed on, and the only thing tba was the amound of compensation Spurs would get cos of poch’s New Contract.

doesn’t sound v.likely now cos all the papers is Mourinho, but would be v.funny srs

This for me sums up what is wrong with football today. No matter what the players think, they are paid to do what the manager wants them to do. If Van Gaal really is that kind of poor man manager then why didnt the people who employed him find that out before they gave him the job? Whatever you think of the guy, he has been treated very shabbily by a club we are lead to believe is the biggest in the world. Total lack of class. Once you give in to player power you have lost it.

You’ve just described a problem with management in general. Who assesses the management?

In this situation, you’d say Fergie, but his stock was lower because of the Moyes situation.

LvG was given over a quarter of a billion to spend on players and he had them producing the worst football in decades. I’m sure he’s getting a decent payoff.

Am I alone in not feeling that sorry for LvG?

As pap says, he’s been given an obscene amount of money. The man has continually talked of LvG’s talents (his referencing of himself in the 3rd person winds me up tbh), made grand promises about what he will achieve and got no where near it.

He was given 2 seasons, which considering the football produced is incredible. I can’t imagine many other clubs would have been so patient with him.

The leaks haven’t come from United. They came from Spain, it is clearly the work of Jose.

I’m not really sure what they are meant to do. They’d be foolish to not think about succession plans. Who will take over, after the current incumbent leaves. I can’t imagine there’s many top flight clubs that don’t have an eye on this. It is thoughy by many that Pellegrini was pretty much told when he took the City job that he’ll hav 3 years - then Pep would take over.

The biggest clubs are huge machines now. They have to constantly be looking to the future. The managerial role has changed, I don’t think anyone can really deny that. You won’t get many more SAF’s that run the club, the obvious exception being Wenger - but that is only due to him being there for 20 years. A lot of people smirked when Signore Cortese spoke of Poch being just a Head of Department, and replacable, but I would argue that is pretty much the case for 99% of clubs now.

The way I see it, Utd have tried their hardest to make it work with LvG. But they have also tried to think about their future. I reckon if they had qualified for CL & won the cup, they’d probably have let him see out his contract. The biggest problems have come from Jose, who has been desperate to engineer this move for himself. He’s coveted that job since he left Chelsea first time round, and went back the Stamford Bridge reluctantly, having not got the job when Moyes did.

I actually think they have learned from the Moyes debacle, which really was a shambles.

Yes.

There is very little respect left in football, with everything going through the media. I think it is completely wrong that you find out that you are loosing your job through the media and the club do not have the dignity to speak face to face with the person they are about to sack.

The whole thing needs to go back to being a little bit human!

Also very surprised that Reuters have not stepped in a bit earlier to force Man U to make an announcement to the stock market.

Well in a normal company, Football is not normal, the manager would assess his immediate responcibilities with the next manager up the line assessing what the lower ranked one has done. until it gets to corporate level where they ditch the whole lot in the bin telling the employees we have had a hard year and times are tough no bonus or wage increases this year.

Then pay out dividends of the highest magnitude to the corporates who actually achieve nothing fo the company.

Thats my take on it anyway.

Yes he will get a big payout and I am sure he will find another high profile job. What bothers me is that he clearly has his own methods which have worked at many other clubs and you would hope that the United head hunters would have known how he operates. If the very highly paid players at Manchester United cant handle being managed robustly is it his fault? He is paid to get results and he has got them in the past using, I assume, the same methods. Is Jose the right man for United? They like attractive fast paced football, not his trademark. I can see another high profile meltdown on the cards!

There has been no evidence that United have known what the fuck they’ve been doing in the past couple of seasons. None. At the start of last season, every man and his dog could tell you exactly what they needed. Defenders, and plenty of them. So what do United do? Go and buy a shitload of attackers, one at a club record fee, who LvG won’t play because he’s too much of a free spirit.

Even under Moyes, they ended up paying more for Fellaini than they would have done had they simply activated a minimum release clause a couple of weeks earlier. United have been a dysfunctional bag of shite at the board level ever since David Gill did the offs, the same year as Fergie.

I just find it weird that Sky Sports are talking about Jose LVG and JM even though, there has still not been an official announcement! Crazy!

I do not think he will deliver the title. Top 4 at a push!

i think he’s done a pretty good job considering he’s had to play a whole season with Chris Smalling as 1st choice CB.

I can honestly say hand on heart, that he was taking Man U in the right direction (for Man U dabs that is) and would have mounted a challenge for the title next season.

I feel that Jose was losing the plot this last season and wad honestly having a bit of a breakdown. If things are not going well first few months, the pressure at Man U compared to Chelsea will be unreal. He has a lot of die hard Mancs to win over. I think he will be gone this time next year, if he is every revealed as Man U new boss!

I can honestly say hand on heart that I cannot stand LVG. Will be interested to see what he achieves in his next big role.

I wonder what’s cheaper.

  1. Mou’s demands, along with all the shite that comes along with it.
  2. Per Bearsy’s prior suggestion, just paying Poch out of his contract at Spurs.

On 2), do you reckon Poch might have some kind of big club release clause anyway? Would be hilarious if so and he uses it to go to United. The fucking shame of it!

Yeah, and with your inate knowledge of football this is supposed to be a good thing??

Funny how United fans are glossing over the fact that Mourinho had a worse season than Van Gaal.

The not-very-special one’s stock is at an all time low.
