How I have my butter on toast will depend on what the topping is. I like to put my butter on straight away, so it melts into the hot toast if im having sweet toppings such as jams & honey, with Marmite being the savory exception!!
If I’m having any other savory topping such as brown sauce or pickle, I’ll let the toast go cold first before I applying the butter.
I don’t think we talk about our butter preferences enough in the UK, so we need to change this!!

Always on hot toast. The key question is how much. If you listen to the Ayatollah, she will tell you that it should be applied to no greater thickness than a micron, where the word which would best describe my efforts is “slathering”
I take a bite of dry toast, and then lick the butter dish. If I’m out of butter, I chug back some vegetable oil. If I’m out of vegetable oil, I use scrapings from the grease tray at the bottom of my Oven.
