Van Dijk prepared for frosty reception at Southampton

Show/hide article…

(Reuters) - Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is prepared for a frosty reception on his return to Southampton but has said he is only focussed on a win at his former club.

Liverpool made Dutchman Van Dijk the world’s most expensive defender by splashing out a world record 75 million pounds in the January transfer window after failing to agree terms during acrimonious dealings in the close season.

Van Dijk, who has made a mixed start to life at Anfield, returns to the south coast for the first time since his move and is fully aware of what the fans could have in store for him.

“Maybe they can boo the whole game. You can’t do anything about it,” Van Dijk said.

“Obviously it’ll be nice to see the players and the friends I have there but, for me, it is going to be about one thing only and that is to win the game.”

Van Dijk scored the winning goal on his Liverpool debut as they beat city rivals Everton 2-1 in their FA Cup third round last month but was injured for the 4-3 home win that ended leaders Manchester City’s unbeaten run in the league.

Liverpool have won once with Van Dijk in the team, losing 3-2 to West Bromwich Albion and drawing 2-2 with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, with the Dutchman conceding an injury-time penalty that allowed striker Harry Kane to equalise.

”With the football we play, the pressing, the different options with players, it is totally different here,“ Van Dijk added. ”So you need time to get used to everything but I am working on it every day together with the team.

”The most important thing is what happens at Melwood and what happens here with the people who care about the team… other people around, fans of other clubs, pundits, they can have their opinions, but it doesn’t really bother me.

“I am talking with the manager and everyone who can help me out. I want to improve and get the maximum out of myself and that is what I am going to do.”

Liverpool are third in the table with 51 points while Southampton are 15th with 26 points.

Virgil van Dijk talks Southampton boo boys ahead of return with Liverpool

Show/hide article…

Liverpool visit Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday (4.30pm).

And it will mark the first return to St Mary’s for the Dutch centre-half since leaving on January 1.

Van Dijk’s final year on the south coast was marred by injury, transfer speculation and a dip in form.

Despite earning Southampton £75m from his sale to Liverpool, fans are not expected to offer him a friendly welcome back.

But 26-year-old Van Dijk is focused on the job in hand with a point to prove, especially after the late penalty he conceded against Tottenham cost Liverpool all three points at the weekend.

Liverpool visit Southampton on Sunday for a big Premier League clash, and we bring you some of the key facts and numbers ahead of the game…

• Southampton are unbeaten in their previous six Premier League matches played on a Sunday.

• They have also kept clean sheets in each of their last two home matches against the Reds.

• However, Liverpool also haven’t conceded in any of their last three Premier League games against Southampton, winning one and drawing two.

• Saints ended their 12-game winless run with victory at West Bromwich Albion last week, and are looking to secure back-to-back wins in the Premier League for the first time since April 2017.

• Defender Jack Stephens is looking to score in his fourth consecutive game for the team, having netted against Watford, Brighton and West Brom.

• Jürgen Klopp is set to face Southampton for the ninth time as Liverpool manager – more than any other opponent since he joined the club.

Southampton vs Liverpool | Teams, streams, predictions and odds

Show/hide article…

Liverpool head to Southampton on Sunday knowing anything less than a win could see them slip out of the Premier League top four.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were within moments of closing the gap on second-placed Manchester United to three points last weekend, but Harry Kane’s last-minute penalty earned Tottenham a 2-2 draw at Anfield to frustrate the Reds yet again.

The draw means that just two points separate Liverpool from falling out of the top four, and Sunday’s trip to the south coast could be a key game given Tottenham and Arsenal - fifth and sixth respectively - face off on Saturday.

However, Mauricio Pellegrini’s Saints are in need of points at the opposite end of the table, and have a point to prove having effectively become Liverpool’s feeder club on transfers in recent years - with £75million Virgil van Dijk the latest player to tread the well-worn path from St Mary’s to Anfield.

Southampton host Liverpool with kick-off scheduled for 4:30pm at St Mary’s on Sunday, February 11.

The match is available via Now TV, with a day pass on offer for £6.99.

The game will be televised on Sky Sports’ Premier League and Main Event channels, with coverage from 4:15pm. Sky Sports subscribers can stream the match online via SkyGo and the SkyGo app.

You can follow the action from 1pm with Standard Sport’s live blog.

Klopp faces a balancing act as Liverpool face the first leg of their Champions League last-16 match away at Porto just three days after taking on Southampton.

As such, it would be no surprise to see the Anfield coach rest a few key names against the Saints, despite the importance of staying on track for a top-four finish.

Adam Lallana will not receive an FA ban after being sent off for Liverpool’s Under-23s against Tottenham.

Joe Gomes (knee) and Ragnar Klavan (thigh) are doubts for the visitors, while Nathaniel Clyne remains out with a back injury.

Southampton’s only injury concern is Charlie Austin, who will miss out with a hamstring problem.

Every Premier League squad’s average age ranked from youngest to oldest

Show/hide article…

West Ham fans have been left scratching their head at their club’s transfer policy yet again.

The Hammers have moved to bring former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra on a free transfer.

While Evra, a five-time Premier League winner, would certainly bring a wealth of experience to the squad there are doubts about his ability to adapt to the English top-flight once again at 36.

It’s not just West Ham who have been criticised for not caring more about their youth policy, with Gary Nevill branding Pep Guardiola a ‘joke’ for naming just six substitutes against Burnley rather than promote a youth team player.

Now that the former France international has joined the Hammers, the average age down at the London Stadium has certainly increased.

But just how do they rank amongst the rest of the Premier League?

With the help of Transfermarkt.co.uk, talkSPORT has ranked the average age of every current squad in the Premier League starting with the youngest.
