Which country is most popular in the Premier League?

Show/hide article…

When Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang took to the field for Arsenal on Saturday night he became the latest star in the Premier League’s worldwide pool of talent.

Arsenal’s club-record signing became the second player from Gabon to line up in England’s top-flight, and scored the fourth in a 5-1 romp over Everton.

In the process he became the 290th players outside of the home nations to feature in a Premier League game this season.

He was not, though, the first Gabonese player of the 2017-18 season, with that honour falling to Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina.

The Premier League’s rich wealth of talent has been taken from 56 countries across the world, from as close as the Republic of Ireland and France to as far afield as Bermuda and Benin.

The most represented countries offer few surprises, with Spain top of the list having provided a whopping 31 players to the Premier League this season.

France trail behind on 25, with Holland on 22 and Belgium 20 - a figure that would have looked very different five years ago, let alone 10.

The Republic of Ireland make up the top five with 17 players in the top-flight, while Argentina and Germany both have 14 representatives.

Behind them are Brazil on 11, including the recently departed Philippe Coutinho.

The biggest surprise in the top 10 comes from the last two countries in it - Senegal and Austria.

Success at the 2002 World Cup led to the first influx of Senegalese players to England, spearheaded by Liverpool duo El-Hadji Diouf and Salif Diao.

Now it is the likes of Sadio Mane, Idrissa Gueye and Mame Biram Diouf who prop up the west African nation. and have led them to Russia 2018 this summer.

Congo DR is perhaps the most unlikely supplier of Premier League talent, boasting as many players in the division as Italy and European champions Portugal.

Arthur Masuaku, Benik Afobe, Elias Kachunga, Chancel Mbemba, Yannick Bolasie and Beni Baningime are flying the flag for the central African nation.

Over the years English football has enoyed a close connection with Scandinavia, and 20 years ago the league was littered with players from the very north of Eurpoe.

It is a far different picture in 2018, with Denmark its most represented country with seven - including Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen.

Sweden have only three, led by Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, while Josh King is the sole Norwegian in the Premier League - a far cry from the 1990s.

Other traditionally popular haunts have fallen on hard times. Dejan Lovren and Nikola Vlasic are the only Croats, Petr Cech the only Czech and Miguel Britos the only Uruguayan.

The USA boast just three players, DeAndre Yedlin, Danny Williams and Geoff Cameron, while Turkey did not feature on the list until Cenk Tosun joined Everton last month.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan remains the only Armenian, while even Benin and Bermuda have representation from Steve Mounie and Nahki Wells respectively.

Gardos free to negotiate Saints departure after costly stay

Show/hide article…

FORGOTTEN man Florin Gardos will have cost Saints an estimated £680,000 per appearance by the time he leaves this summer.

With just six months to go on his St Mary’s contract, Gardos is now able to negotiate a move to potential new clubs before departing on a free this summer.

The Romania international joined Saints in the summer of 2014, moving for £6m from Steaua Bucharest.

The centre-back has been hampered by persistent injuries throughout his Saints career, and the last of his 11 Premier League appearances came nearly three years ago – in a 1-0 win at West Bromwich Albion on 28 February 2015.

In total, the 29-year-old has played just 18 games in all competitions, which is nearly £333,000 per appearance during his four year stay, when his £6m fee is divided up.

When added on to his reported £30,000-a-week wages, which amount to £347,000 per each of his 18 outings in the first team, it totals at around £681,000 per match.

Gardos’ last game for the club is likely to be, unless there’s a sudden and miraculous turnaround in his fortunes, the 5-0 drubbing by Arsenal in the FA Cup fourth round last season at St Mary’s in January.

It’s fair to say Gardos hasn’t had an easy time at Saints, considering his injuries. He suffered a horror cruciate ligament injury in July 2015 in a pre-season friendly against Feyenoord and missed 42 games as a result.

Gardos returned for the club’s under-21s side, but the luckless Romanian then suffered a set-back in July 2016 and wasn’t able to make a first-team appearance until the Gunners defeat in January 2017.

He made ten appearances for Saints’ under-23s last season in a bid to regain full fitness but was never really considered an option by Claude Puel.

This season offered no new chances for Gardos and, aside from three under-23s games, hasn’t played much and is certainly nowhere near Mauricio Pellegrino’s team, with Jack Stephens, Wesley Hoedt, Maya Yoshida and Jan Bednarek all ahead of him in the pecking order.

Gardos can now sign a pre-contract agreement with a new club as he looks to move on from Saints.

Right-back Jeremy Pied is also out of contract this summer and is too able to sign an agreement to move.

The Frenchman was signed on a two-year contract in the summer of 2016, but suffered a serious knee injury which kept him out of the majority of last season.

He has endeared himself to the Saints fans during his stay, which has included eight appearances so far. The 28-year-old, who was signed from Nice on a free transfer, is currently back-up right-back behind Cedric Soares.

Premier League questions: How will Virgil van Dijk be received?

Show/hide article…

How will Virgil van Dijk be received on his return to Southampton? Will Man City overcome their bogey visitors? We take a look at the big questions ahead of the weekend.

Manchester City kick things off on Sky Sports Premier League at 5.30pm on Saturday against Leicester, while Super Sunday sees Newcastle host Manchester United and Liverpool travel to Southampton.

Chelsea and West Brom round it all off on Monday Night Football at Stamford Bridge with kick-off at 8pm.

Pep Guardiola’s men will have to be on their guard with the Foxes in town, even without Riyad Mahrez, who continues to be absent from the first-team after City’s deadline day bid for him was rejected.

City have lost 67 per cent of their home Premier League matches against Leicester - their highest percentage of home defeats against any club in the Premier League.

Rafa Benitez’s men are winless in eight Premier League home games (D3 L5), which is bordering on becoming their worst ever run in the competition. They last went nine games without a win at St James’ Park in August 1999.

Interestingly, Jose Mourinho has never won a Premier League match at St. James’ Park in six attempts and has managed more away league games at Newcastle without winning than at any other club in his managerial career.

Virgil van Dijk has admitted he has prepared himself for a raucous welcome from the Saints fans. The Dutchman became the world’s most expensive defender in January after the Reds paid a fee in the region of £75m for his services after a prolonged transfer saga that involved him handing him a transfer request.

Saints ended their 12-game winless run with victory at West Brom last week, and are looking to secure back-to-back wins in the Premier League for the first time since April 2017.

Chelsea are set to stick with head coach Antonio Conte until the end of the season, according to Sky sources, despite a clear downturn in results, which included a 4-1 defeat at Watford on Monday Night Football. However, surely another defeat against a team bottom of the league would give the Chelsea board a serious decision to make.

However, the Blues have won all three Premier League meetings against West Brom under Conte without conceding a single goal.

Tottenham have lost just once in their last seven Premier League appearances against Arsenal which came earlier this season in a 2-0 loss at the Emirates Stadium.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side will inevitably be looking to win not just for bragging rights, but to distance themselves further from Arsenal in the table while potentially leapfrogging Chelsea into fourth depending on how Antonio Conte’s side fare against West Brom on Monday Night Football.

Sam Allardyce faces the club he last left in Crystal Palace on Saturday as his Everton side look to bounce back from the 5-1 thrashing by Arsenal last weekend. Everton are unbeaten in each of their last six Premier League matches against Palace so should enter the game full of confidence.

However, Everton have won just once in the Premier League since December 18, so will have to play at their best if they wish to overcome a Palace side keen to record a win after consecutive 1-1 draws against West Ham and Newcastle.

Lambert is looking for his second win as Stoke boss and will try and do so against Brighton, who have not scored a single goal in any of their last four visits to the bet365 Stadium.

But the visitors have an in-form goal-scorer in Glenn Murray, who has netted in five of his last seven games in all competitions.

Containing Murray’s threat and grabbing a victory could see Stoke out of the relegation zone by the end of the weekend.

Burnley haven’t won any of their 15 away matches in Wales since beating Cardiff back in April 2000, so they will be looking to put that record to bed on Saturday.

However, Swansea have enjoyed a resurgence under Carlos Carvalhal while Burnley are without a Premier League win in nine games. Victory for Burnley, though, could move them closer to the top six places should Arsenal slip up against Spurs earlier in the day.

Watford are looking to win back-to-back league games for the first time since November, following their 4-1 victory against Chelsea on Monday. Once again, the decision to change a manager mid-season has yielded an upturn in results with Javi Gracia taking four points from his first two games in charge.

David Moyes faced Javi Gracia twice when he managed Real Sociedad in La Liga - he drew one and lost one against Gracia, who was then in charge of Malaga.

David Wagner’s side are starting a Premier League match in the relegation zone for the first time, having dropped into the bottom three following last week’s defeat to Manchester United.

Their slide down the league has resulted in them going odds-on to go down in the relegation betting markets and Wagner has a job on his hands to arrest the slide.

Bournemouth won the reverse fixture 4-0 at the Vitality Stadium earlier this season, despite having Simon Francis sent off in the first half.

Inside Track: Saints vs Liverpool

Show/hide article…

How would you sum up Liverpool’s season so far?

It’s been eventful. Going forward, they have been a joy to watch. Mohamed Salah has exceeded all expectations and broken a host of records, while Roberto Firmino has taken his game to the next level. However, defensive issues have hampered them at times.

Fans’ delight at shattering their transfer record to sign Virgil van Dijk in January was quickly tempered by the sight of Philippe Coutinho leaving for Barcelona. Not replacing him during the winter window was a big gamble by Jürgen Klopp.

The domestic cups were a big disappointment, especially the FA Cup exit at home to West Brom, but Liverpool qualified from their Champions League group in style and sit third in the Premier League, so there’s plenty left to play for.

The next few weeks will go a long way to defining the club’s season. They have Porto in the last 16 of the Champions League and some key battles in the race for a top-four finish.

What’s been the impact/upshot of last week’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Spurs?

Liverpool felt like they had been robbed by those controversial decisions which enabled Spurs to secure a share of the spoils. There was a lot of anger in the dressing room.

The way Liverpool faded in that second half is also a concern, as energy levels looked very low. It’s no surprise that Klopp gave them some time off this week.

Chelsea losing to Watford on Monday night eased the Reds’ frustration after those two points slipped away deep into stoppage time.

With a win over Huddersfield and that draw with the Londoners, Klopp’s men look to have put their January blip – when they suffered back-to-back defeats to Swansea and West Brom – behind them.

Who will be Liverpool’s key men on Sunday?

How van Dijk handles going back to St Mary’s will be crucial. He’s clearly still building up his fitness after missing so much football over the past 12 months, but he was excellent against Spurs, and Liverpool will need him at that level again. He’s likely to have another former Saints defender alongside him in Dejan Lovren.

If they can keep their old club out then the likes of Salah and Firmino should do some damage at the other end.

One current concern for the Reds is the form of Sadio Mané. He looks short of confidence and it will be interesting to see whether Klopp opts to stick with him or give him a breather. He could recall Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

What part will Liverpool play in this year’s race for a Champions League spot, or indeed a trophy?

Liverpool are in the thick of that race for the Champions League spots. With fifth-placed Spurs just two points behind, there’s little margin for error.

If they perform to their maximum, there’s no reason why Liverpool can’t catch Manchester United and finish second to Man City. Klopp says a top-four finish would make this season a success, but the fans are also craving an extended run in the Champions League.

It’s been nine years since the Reds competed in the knockout stages. They have got a reasonably kind draw with Porto and if they get past them anything could happen. Those European nights are special and few clubs will fancy going to Anfield.
