Inside Track: Burnley

Show/hide article…

It’s been a fantastic start to the season, what’s the mood like at the club at present?

The mood is always good to be fair, but enhanced by an excellent start to the season. The only black cloud is the speculation surrounding the manager Sean Dyche, which isn’t going away just yet. There was a story on Tuesday morning that an approach from the Toffees was imminent, which we quashed, but there have been more stories, and until Everton appoint someone else or retain David Unsworth, there will be that element of anxiety among the support.

Their home form was so strong last season, but they seem better equipped on the road having amassed eight points. What do you think that is down to?

A number of things really, another year’s experience at this level, and the fact away performances were improving last season, without getting the results until the penultimate away game at Crystal Palace. But Burnley have added to their impressive framework and organisation, and are looking after the ball better - as a central two of Jack Cork and Steven Defour would suggest - and the 24-pass move that led to the winner at Everton emphasised that.

Who have been the key men for Sean Dyche’s men thus far?

Cork and Defour, as mentioned, have been pivotal, while you could go right across the back four, but particularly the centre backs Ben Mee and James Tarkowski. It was all too easy for pundits who didn’t know Burnley to suggest the sale of Michael Keane would hurt them, but Tarkowski has seamlessly slotted in, and Mee has maintained his excellent performance levels. They are in and around the top clearances and blocks in Europe’s top five leagues.

What sort of a game are you anticipating?

It should be very interesting, certainly tactically. Both sides have scored and conceded a similar number of goals,

Burnley can hurt teams in a variety of ways, they won at Chelsea playing on the front foot after the dismissal of Gary Cahill, and soaked up pressure to claim a point at Spurs and Liverpool, before scoring a superb team goal to win at Everton. But Saints look difficult to penetrate and I like Manolo Gabbiadini, and, if fit, Charlie Austin just scores goals, as Clarets fans know well.

Southampton must find right balance to improve, says Romeu

Show/hide article…

(Reuters) - Southampton must find the right balance between a fast-paced offence and a solid defence that prevents counter-attacks if they are to improve results, midfielder Oriol Romeu said ahead of Saturday’s Premier League game against Burnley.

Southampton are 10th in the standings after winning three and drawing four of their opening 10 games but the Saints have struggled to score, notching just nine goals in the competition so far.

Former Chelsea midfielder Romeu believes that the team are restricted by the fear of giving away goals on the counter.

“Whenever we play against these teams we know how good they are defensively,” Romeu was quoted as saying by the Daily Echo.

”They (opponents) are clever, they are ready to run and recover and go for the counter-attack and that’s hard, because if you try and attack too much you can get killed by a counter-attack.

“We need to find that balance between being creative and offensive and not being punished by a counter-attack.”

The 26-year-old urged his team to be quicker on the ball to drag opposition players out of position and capitalise more on their goal-scoring chances.

“We’d love to all be more creative and make a difference in the last third, but that’s difficult,” the Spaniard added.

“We need to be quicker with the ball, make them (opponents) run and pull them out of place. That will give us a bigger chance to get to the box and get more chances.”

Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina, who missed last week’s 1-1 draw with Brighton due to an ankle injury, has been ruled out of Saturday’s clash, while forward Charlie Austin could get his first league start of the campaign.

Boufal up for PL Goal of the Month

Sofiane Boufal has been nominated for the Premier League’s Goal of the Month award for October.

The Saints playmaker has been shortlisted for his incredible solo goal in Southampton’s 1-0 home victory over West Bromwich Albion.

Boufal ran three-quarters of the St Mary’s pitch, going past a number of West Brom players before finishing brilliantly into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

The strike has already claimed the club’s Sure Goal of the Month prize for October, and is now up for the league-wide award.

Transfer Rater: Charly Musonda to Arsenal, Luke Shaw to Southampton

Show/hide article…

Things change in the blink of an eye in football. The Football Whispers Index takes the latest transfer rumours and gives them a score out of five; the higher the score, the more realistic and reliable the whisper.

Here are today’s top five emerging whispers. And keep an eye on Transfer Talk for all the latest gossip.

Barcelona target Tah could leave Bayer Leverkusen for £22.3 million thanks to a release clause. The 21-year-old centre-back has been heavily linked with a move to the Catalan club after scouts were spotted watching him earlier in the season. Tah has established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s finest defenders since joining Bayer from Hamburg in 2015. Ernesto Valverde is keen to bolster his backline with Thomas Vermaelen and Javier Mascherano tipped to leave the Camp Nou in the summer.

Arsenal are plotting a raid on their Premier League rivals as they weigh up a bid for unsettled Chelsea youngster Musonda. The 21-year-old midfielder has reportedly told Antonio Conte that he wants to leave after growing frustrated at a lack of first team opportunities and hit out at the club last month on Instagram. Musonda has run out of patience and is keen to jump ship, with the Gunners monitoring his progress closely.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is prepared to let Shaw leave on loan but the out-of-favour left-back would prefer a permanent switch to Southampton. The 22-year-old left the Saints for Old Trafford in 2014 but has fallen down the pecking order under the Portuguese coach, who has publicly questioned his attitude.

Shaw has been restricted to just two Carabao Cup appearances this season and does not figure prominently in Mourinho’s plans. A return to Southampton has been mooted as a possible solution, with currents Saints left-back Ryan Bertrand emerging as a Manchester City target.

Newcastle are ready to battle Arsenal in the race to sign highly rated Atlanta United playmaker Almiron. The Paraguay international has emerged as one of the hottest properties in MLS, scoring nine goals and adding eight assists in 30 appearances. Although the Gunners remain interested, Magpies boss Rafael Benitez is keen to steal a march on rival Arsene Wenger. The Spaniard has been deploying Ayoze Perez in an attacking midfield role this season but is determined to sign a more naturally creative player.

Newcastle are also interested in signing Liverpool striker Ings. The former Burnley man has been plagued by injuries since joining the Reds in 2015, but the Magpies may be willing to offer the 25-year-old a chance to resurrect his Premier League career. Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Firmino and Dominic Solanke are all ahead of Ings in the Liverpool pecking order and it is thought Jurgen Klopp will not stand in his way should he decide to leave. Newcastle need fresh impetus up front, having managed just 10 goals in as many games this season.

Guardiola to swoop for Bertrand with Mendy out until April

Show/hide article…

Manchester City have relaunched their interest in Ryan Bertrand as Pep Guardiola targets a replacement for their injured summer signing Benjamin Mendy.

Just days before the announcement of Kyle Walker’s signing - for £54million - Sportsmail revealed that Guardiola was also targeting a move for Southampton full back Bertrand.

But instead, the City boss opted for Walker and former Monaco defender Benjamin Mendy, who cost Guardiola a further £52m before he suffered a knee ligament injury in only his fourth Premier League appearance.

Mendy’s injury has packed a bigger punch than Guardiola first perceived and the Frenchman is set to be sidelined until April at least, leaving City without a natural left back to fill the void, with Fabian Delph the only contender for the spot of late.

Napoli’s Faouzi Ghoulam was Guardiola’s original choice, but with the Algerian also sidelined indefinitely, the Sun has reported a source revealed Bertrand may yet again be at the top of Guardiola’s wish list come the January transfer window.

‘Ryan Bertrand is back on the radar of City with Napoli refusing to budge on Ghoulam at present,’ the source said.

'Bertrand is a player City have ran the rule over before, but his transfer fee could be an issue, it all depends on what they ask for again.

‘His homegrown status is also attractive. The issue they have is Benjamin Mendy is expected to be out for the season.’

City were originally set to offer £25m for the left back, but with their desperation to find a replacement clear, the Saints may well try to empty the Premier League leaders’ pockets a little more.

‘We will see if we can add players in January,’ Guardiola said in October. ‘The problem we have is the Mendy injury.’

Pellegrino: We must show intelligence

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino says Southampton will have to show plenty of intelligence if they are to prevail against a strong Burnley side at St Mary’s on Saturday.

Saints host the Clarets, who have enjoyed an impressive start to the season, holding seventh place in the Premier League as they head into the latest round of matches.

Pellegrino’s men will welcome them to the south coast on the back of three games unbeaten themselves, and the Southampton manager is anticipating a hardly-fought contest.

“I expect a really strong side, because they have been playing well and getting good results in the last few games,” he said. "I think it is a team that is comfortable when they don’t control the ball – they are comfortable playing long ball and counter attack – so we have to be patient and intelligent for reading the right situation, but I feel that we have been working well this week, and I feel my players are ready to play a good game.

"It doesn’t matter what happens in the score or in the way that the opponent is playing – we have to think about us, about our personality and about what we are, to try to play 90 minutes 100 per cent.

"This, for me, is the main target – to be a team. It doesn’t matter the circumstances.

“Sometimes, obviously, a certain stimulus will change the mentality or the motion, but we have to be mature, to be calm. Being calm and patient is not something passive. Patient is looking for another action and trying to be there for the 90 minutes.”

Southampton vs Burnley: Team news, kick-off time, odds and stats

Show/hide article…

Ahead of the Premier League’s weekend action, Sportsmail will be providing you with team news, betting odds and Opta stats. Here is all you need to know as Southampton take on Burnley.

Mario Lemina will be Southampton’s only absentee for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Burnley at St Mary’s.

The Gabon international midfielder remains sidelined with the ankle injury which kept him out of last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Brighton.

Winger Nathan Redmond and forward Shane Long are among the players pushing for starts after being named as substitutes against the Seagulls.

Burnley striker Chris Wood may have to settle for a place on the bench against Southampton.

The New Zealand international is recovering well from a hamstring injury but may not be risked from the start, while Steven Defour (groin) is in a similar position after coming off against Newcastle.

Nahki Wells (foot) proved his fitness with a hat-trick for the under-23s on Thursday night and should keep his spot on the bench, but Jon Walters, Dean Marney (both knee) and Tom Heaton (shoulder) remain out.

Southampton have won their last four home matches against Burnley in all competitions, including victories in both Premier League games.

Burnley have only won one of their last 16 visits to Southampton in all competitions (D6 L9), a 1-0 win in April 2008 in the Championship via a Steven Caldwell goal.

Seven of the eight goals scored in Premier League meetings between these sides have been scored after half-time, with the exception being Shane Long’s 37th minute strike at St Mary’s in March 2015.

Saints have scored three goals in their last two home Premier League games, as many as they had in their previous nine at St Mary’s.

Southampton won their last home game, but haven’t managed consecutive Premier League home victories since December 2016.

Burnley have already won more away games (two) and more away points (eight) this season than they did in the whole of 2016-17 (one win and seven points).

These two sides have seen the fewest goals scored in their Premier League games so far this season – Burnley (18) and Southampton (19 – level with Swansea and Newcastle).

Only bottom of the league side Crystal Palace (3.2 per cent) have converted a lower proportion of their total shots in the Premier League than Southampton (six per cent) this season. Southampton were also the worst side in the 2016-17 Premier League for shot conversion rate (7.5 per cent).

Sean Dyche has lost all four of his trips to St. Mary’s as a manager – three defeats with Burnley and one with Watford in October 2011; a 0-4 defeat which remains his joint-biggest defeat as a manager.

Charlie Austin – who scored 41 goals in 82 league appearances for Burnley between 2011 and 2013 – has been involved in five goals in five league games against the Clarets since leaving (four goals, one assist) and scored a brace in this exact fixture last season.

Former Southampton and current Burnley midfielder Jack Cork has covered 121.1km in the Premier League this season; more than any other player in the competition.

Fleming: Winning the Southampton way

Show/hide article…

After playing out a 1-1 draw at Norwich in the league a month ago, Saints’ youngsters will look to gain the upper hand on their divisional rivals in Saturday’s Premier League Cup tie.

Fleming’s young charges began this year’s competition strongly, with a comfortable win over Premier League giants Man City, and the Under-18s coach is keen to strengthen their grip on Group C.

Tomorrow’s opponents, Norwich also made a winning start after beating Reading 4-0 and top the group on goal difference.

“Overall performances have been good, win lose or draw, I haven’t seen a drop in tempo,” Fleming said, reflecting on the past couple of results.

"Obviously we want to win, but we want to do that the Southampton way. We’ve been making the boys aware of running themes, one is being clinical in front of goal. They’ve tightened up on it and realised that scoring goals is just as important as defending well.

“Being an ex-defender myself, I’ve put it on the centre-backs to start contributing from set-plays. We’ve got excellent deliveries from Will Smallbone, Jake Vokins, Kornelius Hansen and Will Ferry - those balls need to be converted more often.”

Talking about the prospect of travelling back to Norwich, where Fleming spent eleven years of his professional career, the U18s coach added: "It is a place I know really well. They build solid teams at all age groups, big powerful boys who will be well organised.

"Beating Man City by three, and Chelsea by four recently shows what we are capable of.

“They’ve proven that when they are really at it, they can be as good as any in the country. The secret is asking them to produce that week in week out.”

Man Utd News: Shaw eyes Saints return, big Fellaini deal claim, teams news for Chelsea tie

Show/hide article…

Luke Shaw promises to keep pushing and get back in the game after a recent injury and being reserved when playing against Swansea for the premier league

Luke Shaw could reportedly be heading back to Southampton in January as his unhappy stint at Manchester United continues.

The Mirror report Shaw is considering a return to St Mary’s after failing to impress United boss Jose Mourinho.

The shock move may see the Saints sell England left-back Ryan Bertrand to Manchester City when the transfer window reopens in the New Year.

Shaw, 22, has not played a minute of Premier League football this season despite fully recovering from ankle surgery.
