WHAT’S AT STAKE?

Saints are three games unbeaten and were 1-0 winners last time out on home soil against West Brom a fortnight ago.

Both sides will want to leave the league campaign on a high ahead of the two-week international break.

Charlie Austin, who also missed the Brighton trip, has returned to training after a knock.

Burnley: Top scorer Chris Wood is back in training after a hamstring injury, while fellow frontman Nahki Wells returned to action with a hat-trick for the under-23s last night.

Ever-present midfielder Steven Defour came off in the win over Newcastle with a tight groin, but should be available again.

Southampton v Burnley

Show/hide article…

Burnley manager Sean Dyche says striker Chris Wood has a “very strong chance” of making his return from a hamstring injury on Saturday.

Jon Walters, Dean Marney and Tom Heaton remain out, but Steven Defour is expected to overcome the tight groin that forced him off against Newcastle.

Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina is still sidelined due to the ankle injury that kept him out against Brighton.

Aside from that, manager Mauricio Pellegrino has no injury worries.

John Motson: "Judging on the season so far there might not be many goals at St Mary’s on Saturday, but an intriguing encounter is in store between these evenly matched sides.

"Burnley are enjoying a club record start to a Premier League campaign, and their best in the top flight since the 1973-74 season.

"However, joy for Clarets’ fans has been tempered somewhat by the ongoing speculation linking manager Sean Dyche with the Everton job.

“Southampton have been solid but unspectacular under Mauricio Pellegrino. Their struggles in front of goal show no signs of abating, but Burnley old boy Charlie Austin has a great scoring record against his former club.”

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino: "This game is really important for us because we need to keep going and get points.

“We have in the last three games and it’s another opportunity to keep going and convert this performance into points.”

Burnley manager Sean Dyche: "A manager told me, and he probably got it about right, we had changed in a positive way but not stopped doing the good stuff, the nitty gritty, the organisational work - we’d added another level with the ball and trying to affect the game with the ball.

“We’re not saying we’re trying to play like Barcelona or Real. But we’re trying to add to another string to our bow. Can we find different ways of operating to affect the game?”

Saints have struggled for goals, scoring nine in their opening 10 games, but they have enough players to score goals.

Burnley are always in the right positions, they don’t get caught on breakaways, are good at defending set-pieces, good at pinching second balls, all those kind of things.

That is why Dyche, who has been linked to Everton, has done so well there. Does he stay or does he go? It’s an interesting one.

Romeu and Saints targeting marginal gains

Show/hide article…

For starters, this group is one of the most talented the midfielder has seen in two-and-a-half years at St Mary’s.

“I would say it is one of the best I’ve seen in my time here. There are some top performers but we need to have that top level together as a group and transfer that into results.”

The constituent pieces are there then for Saints to begin climbing the table and kick off the chase for a third Europa League place in as many seasons, but to do so they will need to navigate a testing winter schedule.

Victory over Burnley this weekend would ensure that they enter the international break unbeaten since the last but the Spanish enforcer is keen to make an extra step up in the coming months with the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City lying in wait.

“We are tenth at the moment and, being realistic as a team, we know that we can look upwards and push to finish higher.

“Qualifying for European competition again will always be the club’s objective. We had an amazing experience last season, playing against great opposition in some fantastic stadiums.

“A difficult run of fixtures is on the way but we are excited for the challenge. Hopefully we can string some wins together and start climbing the table.”

Assured in victory over Crystal Palace, unfortunate for the visit of Manchester United and individually inspired against Newcastle and West Brom in recent weeks, attention to the finer details will be the key to begin churning out results.

“Maybe we have lacked a bit of consistency in recent matches," he admits. "We have played very well in some portions of games and then dropped off. That’s something we need to do better going forwards.

“In this league, you can play well for 80 minutes, lose focus for five and immediately be punished. We need to be mentally ready for the full 90. Next time we get in front in a game, we can’t afford to let the intensity slide.”

The remedy? Attention to detail on the training ground. This is a game of marginal gains and new Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino knows it well. For Romeu, therein lies the difference between tenth and the top six.

“He has identified the smaller things that we need to improve on and the squad is buying into that. We need to take care of the details, pushing that extra yard to get in support of a teammate, because they are the things that decide a goal scored or a goal against.

“We have a strong defensive platform on which to build. We are close to putting it all together. If we start doing that, we will get to where we want to be this term.”

A key pillar in that structure has been the midfield muscle of Romeu alongside summer arrival Mario Lemina. The duo’s early season performances have earned praise from all corners early on but the midfielder is confident that his new colleague is only just getting started.

“Mario has been very good and he has brought extra strength to the squad. It is great to have him here and we are looking forward to seeing how good he can be.

“We are there for him when he needs us: he has made a very good start but, like all of us, improving week on week is the goal.”

With games coming thick and fast, now is the time to turn promise into performances, beginning with Burnley at St Mary’s on Saturday.

Opposition View: Burnley

Show/hide article…

The high-flying Clarets are seventh in the Premier League and level on points with Liverpool, but Saints would leapfrog the Lancashire club with victory.

Burnley have already picked up more points away from home this season than they did in the entirety of 2016/17, including an opening day win at Chelsea and impressive draws at Tottenham and Liverpool.

"I’ve actually seen them a few times – once live against Stoke,” said Dyche of Southampton.

“They look a good side and have done for the past few years.

"After the calming down of that van Dijk situation, he’s back playing and is a very good player.

"We’ve slightly morphed into something different away from home so far this season.

“It’s important we remember that and reflect upon the performances we’ve had so far.

“We need to use some of that experience coming into this game, another tough Premier League game quite obviously, but we’re in good shape.”

Dyche, who this week celebrated five years as Burnley boss, is among the favourites to take the vacant manager’s job at Everton.

"The players have just got on with their jobs, despite all the speculation. They are professional,” he added.

"I just keep getting on with my job, same as I was last week.”

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino: No extra pressure ahead of Burnley tie

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino has played down the importance of beating Burnley ahead of a daunting run of Premier League fixtures.

Saints have managed a steady start to the season under the Argentine and are currently 10th in the table having taken 13 points from their opening 10 games.

After hosting the Clarets on Saturday, their 10 remaining matches of 2017 include trips to Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United, as well as home games against Everton and Arsenal.

However, coach Pellegrino does not believe the tricky forthcoming challenges add any extra pressure to take three points at St Mary’s this weekend.

“Not for me, because it is for everyone,” he replied when asked if the game was particularly significant for Southampton.

"We have got points in the last three games and it’s another opportunity to keep improving and convert these performances into points.

"OK, in the future we play against the biggest teams in the Premier League but we don’t know (how those games will go).

"I’m really happy about that because, for me as a manager, to play against the biggest teams is something that we have to enjoy and I would like to see my players like we played against Man U (a 1-0 loss on September 23), we played really well.

“You don’t know, competition in football, it’s an opportunity to show how we are and we have to show every single week.”

Over-achieving opponents Burnley find themselves in seventh position, three points ahead of Saints.

Sean Dyche’s Clarets travel to the south coast looking to continue the impressive away form which has already seen them win at Chelsea and Everton and secure draws against Tottenham and Liverpool.

Pellegrino believes “outstanding” counterpart Dyche deserves the success he has achieved.

“I don’t know him personally but I know how he has been working in the last few seasons with his team, how they are growing,” Pellegrino added.

"His job is outstanding, thinking about a team that are really humble, working and playing with an identity, it’s something that is really difficult to build.

“It’s part of the process, the transition, when you keep the same ideas in the long term always you get results.”

The Italian international counts himself lucky to have realised his dream of a career as a professional footballer, but reveals it’s the simple things in life that make him happiest in an extended interview from his family home in Winchester.

An image of Gabbiadini in his traditional knee-slide celebration adorns the front cover, along with a poppy to commemorate Saints’ last home fixture before Remembrance Day.

This edition also features our annual All Saints Day dedications, as we remember those we have lost over the past 12 months, including former players, staff members and supporters.

Elsewhere, Mauricio Pellegrino and Steven Davis pen their usual matchday thoughts, whilst the skipper opens up about his childhood and first memories of football in our Getting to Know feature.

With the deadline approaching for fans to submit their Ultimate Saints XI, Francis Benali gives himself a selection headache by picking his all-time team in his exclusive column for SAINTS.

Our history section continues to provide the perfect hit of nostalgia, including details of a new book focusing on the club’s eventful past, while there is the usual comprehensive coverage of our opponents.

There are more outlets than ever from which to purchase this season’s matchday programme, which will continue to retail at £4.
