10 Premier League stars with points to prove this weekend

Show/hide article…

The Premier League makes a welcome return this weekend after a fortnight of international football and there are some intriguing fixtures in store.

The north London derby at the Emirates between Arsenal and Tottenham kicks off a busy Saturday with Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United all in action.

There are also crucial matches involving the sides at the foot of the table and Sunday sees David Moyes take charge of West Ham for the first time when they travel to Watford.

Amongst it all, there are plenty of players who’ll feel they have something to prove and we take a closer look at 10 of them.

Sanchez has struggled for form after his deadline day move from Arsenal to Manchester City fell through and the Chilean has cut a sorry and dejected figure in far too many games this season.

To make matters worse, Sanchez, who considers himself among the world’s elite players, won’t be gracing next summer’s World Cup after Chile embarrassingly failed to qualify.

With Arsenal down in sixth place and already trailing their bitter north-London rivals Tottenham, they need their talisman to turn in a sparkling, match-winning performance more than ever in Saturday’s derby.

Lukaku believed he had become Belgium’s all-time leading scorer when he headed home the winner against Japan in Tuesday night’s friendly.

But it then emerged that three goals he scored in a World Cup warm-up match against Luxembourg back in May 2014 had not been recognised by FIFA because Belgium made seven substitutions rather than the permitted six.

His bright start to the season for Manchester United has faded badly too and Lukaku hasn’t scored for them since September 30. He’ll be desperate to correct that drought against Newcastle on Saturday night.

It has been a pretty disappointing start for Gylfi Sigurdsson at Everton with the Iceland international looking burdened by his £45million price tag and unable to make much of an impression.

Just one goal and two assists since he arrived from Swansea isn’t exactly the return the Toffees expected for a sizeable investment and his problems seem to sum up the club’s terrible start to the season.

Managerless Everton find themselves in a relegation battle nobody predicted and they have already crashed out of the Europa League. At least a trip to rock-bottom Palace could offer Sigurdsson the chance to atone.

It’s been a really testing few weeks for the Liverpool centre-half. Already criticised at times for the quality of his defending this season, he was forced to endure disgusting death threats made to his family on social media.

The threat followed a poor performance in Liverpool’s 4-1 defeat by Tottenham at the end of last month and he was then left out of the Reds squad for the match against Huddersfield.

With Liverpool recapturing some of their best form in the matches since the Spurs debacle, Lovren will be determined to show both his mental resilience and defensive competence against former club Southampton.

His 23 goals helped return Newcastle to the Premier League last season, but Dwight Gayle has endured a frustrating time of it since they returned to the big time.

Rafa Benitez has favoured Joselu as Newcastle’s striker for most of the season but Gayle was given a start against Bournemouth last time out.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t find the net in a disappointing 1-0 defeat to a side in the relegation zone. If he gets a chance at Old Trafford, Gayle could really do with a morale-boosting first goal of the season.

Another player to suffer international disappointment this week was Southampton striker Gabbiadini as Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 60 years.

Gabbiadini started in their play-off second leg with Sweden, but struggled to get a touch, let alone a crucial goal, and was taken off for Andrea Belotti in the second half.

He only has three goals for Southampton so far this season as well, and his bright start for the club when signed from Napoli back in January seems a distant memory.

It seems unlikely that Sissoko, who signed from Newcastle for £30m just last year, will ever convince the many Tottenham fans who just don’t rate him.

He has largely struggled to make any impact at Spurs, yet has played at least some part in every Premier League, Champions League and EFL Cup fixture they have played this season.

One of the ways Sissoko could win over the highly-sceptical Spurs fanbase is to be the match-winner against Arsenal this Saturday.

This really could apply to all the West Ham squad as they attempt to impress new manager David Moyes and simultaneously guide the Hammers out of their relegation battle.

21-year-old midfielder Fernandes was panned for a lack of effort last time out against Liverpool, a match that ended in a 4-1 defeat and spelt the end for Slaven Bilic.

A new era at the London Stadium starts with a visit to Watford on Sunday afternoon and the players need to treat it as a blank canvas to show Moyes what they can do.

Everton beat Watford 3-2 in a thrilling contest just before the start of the international break, but things could have been different had Tom Cleverley converted a stoppage-time penalty.

Instead, the midfielder’s weak spot-kick went wide and Watford suffered a third straight league defeat, leaving their brilliant start to the campaign under Marco Silva a distant memory.

Cleverley and his team-mates have a great chance to get their season back on track against West Ham, who will be playing their first game under David Moyes.

It was a memorable few days for Tammy Abraham, who was handed his senior international debut in England’s goalless draw with Germany and then came off the bench late on against Brazil.

The striker, on loan from Chelsea, has four league goals for Swansea but the team have been really struggling with five defeats from their last six games.

It will once again be up to Abraham to offer some inspiration when they travel to a Burnley team exceeding all expectations on Saturday.

Does sacking a Premier League manager improve results?

Show/hide article…

David Moyes takes charge of West Ham at Watford live on Sky Sports this Sunday after replacing Slaven Bilic at the helm - but does replacing a manager mid-season improve results?

Bilic became the fourth Premier League boss to lose his job this term after Ronald Koeman and Craig Shakespeare were sacked in October and Frank de Boer got the boot in September after only 77 days at Crystal Palace.

But how does sacking a manager affect results?

Leicester sacked Claudio Ranieri in February this year after five consecutive defeats - just 25 league games after guiding the Foxes to their first Premier League title against 5000-1 odds.

Assistant Craig Shakespeare took the helm and instantly produced five back-to-back league wins. However, results began to decline after the initial purple patch and Shakespeare lost four of his opening six league games this season before being axed last month.

So was the initial ‘bounce’ in good form typical after sacking a manager, and would those results have occurred anyway?

First of all, we looked at 10 mid-season managerial causalities to see if results improved or declined after a sacking and whether the impact was sustained or short-lived.

A similar, but less drastic bounce occurred at Crystal Palace after Neil Warnock was sacked in December 2014, and after replacement Alan Pardew was axed to pave the way for Sam Allardyce, who proceeded to secure Premier League survival before resigning at the end of last season.

In almost all cases, the immediate upturn in form after sacking a manager is temporary, followed by a gradual return to average results - particularly in the cases of Garry Monk at Swansea and Paul Lambert at Aston Villa.

The graphic below shows the five-game rolling points average from 10 league games before a sacking and up to 30 fixtures after.

We combined the results of all 10 managers to work out an average impact of sacking a manager, shown at the bottom of the graphic.

On average results improve for the first six games after dismissing a manager, after which, results taper off and return to levels recorded nine games before the sacking.

However, what if a manager isn’t sacked when his side reaches rock-bottom form - do results still improve? Several examples suggest they do.

The graphic below shows the rolling five-game average points ratio for Bilic at West Ham - starting five games into his reign.

Every low point during his 27-month tenure was followed by an upturn in form - identical to the bounce effect that frequently occurs after clubs sack their manager.

Indeed, Arsene Wenger has experienced numerous lows during his 21 years at Arsenal. But, again, every notable low has preceded a bounce in good form.

Therefore, with fine margins dividing title-winning, relegation and European qualification places - clubs may well sack a manager to benefit from the so-called bounce effect.

But the data suggests that when results hit rock bottom and teams are under-performing, the return to expected form is inevitable - with or without sacking a manager.

Will David Moyes start a positive resurgence at West Ham and record the Hammers’ first league victory since September?

Ex-Premier League star admits he retired as he prefers ‘beer and barbecue’

Show/hide article…

Dani Osvaldo has admitted he walked away from football as he prefers “beer and barbecue to money.”

The controversial striker’s form fluctuated throughout his career, but at his best he was amongst the most deadly forwards in Europe.

Mauricio Pochettino made him Southampton’s most expensive signing in 2013 for around £15m, but the former Italy international was soon embroiled in controversy with an altercation with team-mate Jose Fonte.

A series of loan moves followed before finally ending his career at Boca Juniors but Osvaldo has no regrets.

“I decided to quit at Boca, there was too much gossip,” Osvaldo admitted in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I couldn’t go out, I was afraid of people. I couldn’t do it anymore. I had offers from China and clubs in the Champions League, but I was detached.

“I was beginning to hate what I had always loved. Football deserves respect, and I prefer asado [Argentinian barbecue] and beer to money."

Osvaldo almost returned to the top of the game in 2016 with Sevilla in the Champions League, with compatriot Jorge Sampaoli producing one of Europe’s most exciting sides.

Despite a plea from the current Argentina manager, Osvaldo knocked back the offer due to playing a rock festival.

“Do you want a laugh? In December 2016 [Jorge] Sampaoli contacted me, he was at Sevilla at the time," Osvaldo recalled.

“He said to me: ‘Dani, I’m not asking anything of you, you can do what you want on the pitch and off, but I need a striker’.

“I told him ‘but boss, there’s the Cosquín Rock festival!’. He said ‘I forgot! Go, of course, you can’t miss it’. Two crazy people!"

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp returns to training after health scare

Show/hide article…

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp returned to work on Thursday after a health scare which forced him to miss training on Wednesday.

The German was discharged from hospital on Wednesday evening having been admitted for tests earlier in the day after feeling unwell.

However, after a night at home, the 50-year-old German manager was back at Melwood on Thursday.

All players have now returned from international duty - Spaniard Alberto Moreno, Germany’s Emre Can, Dutchman Georginio Wijnaldum and Serbia’s Marko Grujic - with the full squad scheduled to train together on Thursday afternoon.

The only real doubt is over Sadio Mane’s hamstring problem, although the Senegal international has yet to be ruled out of Saturday’s clash with Southampton.

Midfielder Adam Lallana is back with the group having not played a competitive game this campaign because of a thigh injury.

Meanwhile captain Jordan Henderson has declared himself fit after a similar problem caused him to miss the Premier League win over West Ham before the international break and England’s two friendlies against Germany and Brazil.

‘I feel good. I completed my first session on Wednesday, so hopefully I can play a part at the weekend,’ Henderson said.

Mario Lemina remains sidelined

Show/hide article…

The former Juventus man is nursing an ankle injury sustained in training, but with his recovery continuing to progress well, is expected to make an earlier than anticipated return to action.

“Mario Lemina was training well, much better than before,” the manager reiterated. "But he will not be ready to play Saturday.

“We look at his problem three weeks ago and he’s improved a lot [since then]. But it is too soon to put him on the pitch.”

With no fresh injury concerns, the manager also spoke about relishing the prospect of returning to the club he once played for and consequently spent a short time coaching under Rafa Benítez.

“We are comfortable with the ball, so are they,” he continued. "We’ll try to manage the ball, this will be key to the game. Try to be aggressive, when they [Liverpool] are higher it is an opportunity for us to create problems.

“It will be really tough, but maybe against those teams that are more offensive, you have the chances to find more space.”

Shay Given: Liverpool needed a plan B after failing to sign Virgil Van Dijk

Liverpool owner urged to sign Virgil van Dijk in January by Boston Red Sox fan

Liverpool are reportedly looking at Kara Mbodji as an alternative to long-term target Virgil van Dijk.

Turkish Football claim the Anderlecht defender is attracting plenty of interest and is worth £10m.

Liverpool and Brighton are eyeing the 28-year-old as are clubs from Italy, Turkey and Russia, it is said.

Mbodji has three-years remaining on his current contract at Anderlecht.

7 January defensive options for Liverpool that aren’t Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk is finally heading to Anfield! To play for Southampton on Saturday.

The Dutchman starred in one of the summer’s longest-running and most dramatic transfer sagas, but he ended up staying with his current employers, despite endless rumours and Liverpool fans crashing a flight-tracking website as they were convinced he was on the way to Merseyside.

The former Celtic man will line up for the Saints against the Reds on Saturday, and while it is highly likely that Liverpool will make another move for him in January, thoughts have now turned to who they could get if they don’t target him.

There are other options out there, after all.

And here are seven of them.

Previously one of the first names on Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid teamsheet, Uruguayan defender Gimenez has seen opportunities limited this season by the form of Diego Godin, Stefan Savic and Lucas Hernandez.

Still only 22, he was playing for his country at the 2014 World Cup, and after links with several big clubs he could be offloaded by Atletico in January ahead of his contract expiring in the summer.

There are reports that Van Dijk’s fellow Dutchman has already signed a new deal at Lazio, although nothing has been confirmed yet and it is also believed that he’s insisting on a release clause.

Previously linked with Manchester United, the 25-year-old has 31 international caps, and would seem to be made for the Premier League.

The 19-year-old French defender followed the same path as Naby Keita when he joined RB Leipzig from Red Bull Salzburg in January, and Liverpool might like to return to the Bundesliga side to make a move for the French youth international.

Upamecano has rapidly developed this season, and picked up Champions League experience.

He very nearly left West Brom in the summer, and Northern Irishman Evans could be on the market again in the New Year.

Things don’t seem rosy at the Hawthorns, and if he wants out and Jurgen Klopp fancies bringing in an experienced defender with plenty of Premier League nous, he could certainly do worse.

As Liverpool know, Rafael Benitez is a very good coach of defenders. And Lascelles is the best current example of that.

At just 23, he’s taken the captain’s armband at St James’s Park, leading by example as his side have impressed many this season.

Could an England call-up be next?

It’s a left-field choice, but given that Liverpool are in theory just looking for an upgrade on Ragnar Klavan to add to their squad, could 23-year-old Scouser O’Connell be the answer?

The former Blackburn and Brentford man has been in superb form for Sheffield United this season as they’ve shone in the Championship, and he’d surely jump at the chance to be a squad player.

Maybe a centre-back isn’t what Liverpool need at all, and perhaps they’d be better off going for a right-back instead.

With Nathaniel Clyne now out for a further three months, youngsters Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold will continue to share that role, but everyone knows England’s new star Gomez is better in the centre.

He could move there permanently, and an experienced right-back could be added to alternate with Alexander-Arnold.

Dušan Tadić banned from driving for six months

Show/hide article…

A Premier League footballer who was clocked doing 35mph in a 30mph zone in his £60,000 Porsche has been banned from driving for six months.

Southampton winger Dušan Tadić, who also plays for the Serbia national side that reached the 2018 World Cup, ended up in court after twice failing to identify who was driving his car when it was caught speeding.

Tadić’s black Porsche Cayenne was flashed by a speed camera travelling 35mph in a 30mph zone less than a mile away from the St Mary’s Stadium.

The 28-year-old has now been banned from the wheel for six months ‘due to repeat offending’ and had six points added to his licence.

Tadić was also fined £660 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £66.

The footballer was the first signing made by then Southampton boss Ronald Koeman in 2014, when he joined from FC Twente for £10.9million.

The attacking midfielder was reportedly a transfer target for Liverpool in the summer.

Tadić, from Ocean Way in Southampton, was sentenced at Aldershot Magistrates’ Court.
