Lemina ruled out for Liverpool

Show/hide article…

Mario Lemina has been ruled out of Saints’ trip to Liverpool.

The combative midfielder has missed the last two games with an ankle injury and the club were hoping the international break would have given him sufficient time to recover to be able to play at Anfield.

However, though Lemina has returned to training he won’t be quite ready for Liverpool.

Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino said: “Mario Lemina was training well, much better than before, but I think will not be ready to play Saturday.

“We think about his problem a few weeks ago and he has improved a lot but still already it is too soon to put him again on the pitch.”

Dani Osvaldo says he quit football as he prefers ‘beer to money’

Show/hide article…

Dani Osvaldo, the former Southampton and Italy striker who is now the lead singer of a band, claimed he quit football in 2016 so he could eat more barbecue food and drink more beer.

Osvaldo, 31, scored four goals in 14 appearances for Italy and three in 13 during a ill-fated move to Southampton in 2013 for £13million. He returned to Italy in January 2014, with Juventus on loan, after a training ground bust-up with then Saints captain Jose Fonte.

He went on to play for Porto and Boca Juniors but had his contract terminated after being found smoking in the club dressing room in May 2016. He announced he had retired three months later amid reports he was set to sign for Chievo.

‘I couldn’t do it anymore. I had offers from China and clubs in the Champions League, but I was detached,’ Osvaldo told La Gazzetta dello Sport. 'I was beginning to hate what I had always loved.

‘Football deserves respect, and I prefer asado [Argentinian barbecue] and beer to money.’

Osvaldo revealed he had an offer to return to Sevilla last year but rejected it because his band were scheduled to play in a festival.

‘Do you want a laugh? In December 2016 [Jorge] Sampaoli contacted me, he was at Sevilla at the time,’ Osvaldo recalled.

'He said to me: “Dani, I’m not asking anything of you, you can do what you want on the pitch and off, but I need a striker”.

‘I told him “but boss, there’s the Cosquin Rock festival!”. He said “I forgot! Go, of course, you can’t miss it”. Two crazy people!’

Mauricio Pellegrino aims to ‘create problems’ for Liverpool

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has vowed to create problems for Liverpool when he visits his former club for the first time as Southampton manager.

Pellegrino, the former Argentina international, spent time at Anfield in both playing and coaching capacities alongside Rafa Benitez, before going it alone as a manager in his own right.

The 46-year-old has managed in both his homeland and La Liga - with Valencia and then Alaves - before replacing Claude Puel at St Mary’s in the summer.

It has not been an easy transition to life in the Premier League for Pellegrino - with his side struggling for both points and goals - and he will head to Anfield on Saturday in need of a morale-boosting result.

‘It will be a nice experience for me,’ Pellegrino said as he looked ahead to his Merseyside return. 'I had a really happy time in my career as a player and as a coach at Liverpool.

‘But on Saturday it is a nice opportunity to represent Southampton, and we will try to play well, play a good game and create problems for Liverpool.’

Pellegrino will be without Mario Lemina this weekend. The former Juventus midfielder suffered an ankle injury in training, and, while he continues to make a quicker than anticipated recovery, the trip to Merseyside will come too soon.

One Southampton player Pellegrino could also have been without is Virgil van Dijk after the wantaway defender handed in a transfer request last summer in a bid to push through a move to Liverpool.

But Saints dug in their heels, and, as the defender prepares to line up against Jurgen Klopp’s side, Pellegrino insists his centre-half is fully focused on the job in hand.

‘Virgil is training well and thinking about our club,’ Pellegrino added. 'We cannot control the market and all the whispers.

‘We have a lot of players who are important and most of the clubs in the world want a lot of our players . Virgil is one of those, but we have to be focused on our job.’
