Rodriguez will have something to prove, says Bridge

Show/hide article…

Jay Rodriguez will be playing with an extra spring in his step when West Bromwich Albion travel to Southampton, says Wayne Bridge.

Saturday’s match will be the first time Rodriguez returns to Saints, the club with whom he made his Premier League breakthrough in 2012/13.

And former Southampton defender Bridge believes his willingness to impress against the side he left in the summer could be the key to Tony Pulis’s side ending their six-match winless run.

“Rodriguez is coming back and he’s going to want to prove himself,” says Bridge. "He’ll be working hard and he could be dangerous coming back home.

“I hated going back to Southampton because I got booed! But it all depends on the circumstances that you leave and you definitely go back wanting to do well and prove something.”

Bridge also thinks West Brom could gain an extra edge by drawing upon Rodriguez’s knowledge of his former club.

“In this day and age there’s so much preparation and video to watch on the other team, you know what each player’s like,” he adds.

“But he might have seen something that no-one else has and say to one of his team-mates: ‘He doesn’t like this, get at him, you’re quicker than him!’ Things like that. He’ll rally them up.”

Bridge: Lemina can help Southampton’s goal quest

Show/hide article…

Wayne Bridge says if Southampton are to earn only their second home win of the season, when West Bromwich Albion visit St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday, then Mario Lemina is likely to be at the heart of it.

Bridge has been impressed by the summer signing from Juventus and believes that Lemina, from central midfield, can act as the platform to drive Saints to their first league win at St Mary’s since beating West Ham United 3-2 in Matchweek 2.

“Lemina is such a great player: his workrate, the way he gets up and down the pitch,” says Bridge, who made 152 Premier League appearances for Southampton. "He passes forward a lot.

“Southampton aren’t doing as well as they should be in terms of scoring goals but his all-round play is great and if he can control the game from the middle of the park they’ll have a great chance.”

Mauricio Pellegrino’s team have failed to score in nine Premier League home matches in 2017.

Bridge believes the fault does not lie solely with Southampton’s attacking men but that players like Lemina can contribute to them firing once again.

“I remember when I was at Southampton and we weren’t scoring enough or winning matches,” Bridge says. "We had a chat about why and, although it falls on the centre-forwards and attacking players, you’ve got to chip in elsewhere and demand more from each other.

“Southampton need to play forward quicker and move the ball quicker. Defensively, they’ve done all right but they need to move it quicker to create more.”

Rodriguez prepares for Saints reunion

Show/hide article…

JAY Rodriguez will be hoping to show what Saints are missing out on when he returns to St Mary’s for the first time since his summer move to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

The 28-year-old striker has recently been tipped for a recall to the England squad for the first time since his 2013 call-up while with Saints, and will be keen to demonstrate that he has moved on since his frustrating end to life on the south coast.

Rodriguez was a fans’ favourite at St Mary’s - and remains a popular figure even after his exit.

But after a magnificent 17-goal campaign in 2013/14 ended in a serious knee injury he never truly rediscovered his best form at Saints.

His progress was seriously hampered by injuries and made a £12m switch to The Hawthorns in July to give himself a fresh start at a new club.

The former Burnley man has had limited success with the Baggies, who visit St Mary’s on Saturday in the Premier League, scoring two goals in ten appearances in all competitions.

The versatile attacker has mainly been deployed out wide by Albion boss Tony Pulis and had a limited impact for the Birmingham outfit as they drew 1-1 at Leicester City on Monday night in the Premier League.

With Rodriguez now a regular starter for West Brom, it has attracted the attentions of England manager Gareth Southgate, who went to watch the stalemate at the King Power Stadium.

It is reported that Southgate has been attracted to Rodriguez because of his ability to play in all forward areas, as the Three Lions prepare to face Germany and Brazil in friendlies next month.

He ended his Saints spell as a frustrated figure, playing mainly as a striker under Claude Puel.

There were flashes of his brilliance - his brace at AFC Bournemouth back in December was a throwback to Rodriguez’s glory days under Mauricio Pochettino.

However, it was always likely he’d want to depart for pastures new in the transfer window, having come close to going to West Brom in the summer of 2016 and in January this year.

He will now come back to St Mary’s - where he spent five years, scoring 32 goals in 126 appearances, and is sure to get a warm welcome from Saints supporters, who backed him through his up and down time at the club.

The Saints faithful will, however, hope that Rodriguez, who has three goals in eight games against former clubs, won’t find form at his former stomping ground.

So far this term J-Rod has struck one Premier League goal, in a 1-1 draw against Stoke, having also got a goal in the League Cup against Accrington Stanley.

But that strike against the Potters was back in August and Rodriguez, who has no assists this term, has embarked on a run of six successive games without a goal in all competitions.

Saints are “nervous” hosts

Show/hide article…

DUSAN Tadic is adamant Saints are not mentally weak – but admits they get “nervous” playing at St Mary’s at the moment.

Saints have won just once in five home games in the Premier League this season and have often been booed by their own supporters after turgid displays.

But Mauricio Pellegrino’s men want to atone for their poor results by being more “aggressive” and playing “faster” when they welcome West Bromwich Albion to the south coast on Saturday.

“Sometimes we miss chances and then the opponents score the first goal and we become a bit nervous,” Tadic said, who wants Saints to be more exciting.

"This is may be one of the problems. I don’t know really, but it’s true when we’re at home and away we need to be more aggressive and play much faster.

“We will then get the energy from the fans and then we can score.”

The playmaker, who has netted once in eight games this term, believes the team are influenced by the negative atmosphere that has sometimes featured at St Mary’s as Saints sturggle to hit form at home.

“Yes, but also it’s normal when you’re a fan and you like a club that you’ll be frustrated by some things because you love the club,” he said.

"When we play sometimes at home we need to make, from the first moment, a warm atmosphere. Then the fans will be with us.

"They are with us but I mean we want to push and give them something, more excitement, and then they’ll take more joy from watching us and they’ll be more lively.

“Also for us we know this is what we should do at home and because before [in previous seasons] we broke teams like that. When we played at home we broke teams easier.”

When asked if he felt Saints were mentally weak at the moment, Tadic replied: "I cannot say that.

“I don’t know what is the problem but hopefully we will solve that against West Brom.”

The Serbia international, who has just helped his nation to qualification to the World Cup finals in Russia next summer, wants Saints to up their tempo.

Often Pellegrino’s side have been unable to break down defensive opponents and have been accused of producing pedestrian build-up play not conductive to breaking down compact sides.

Tadic explained: "We need to play fast. When someone is well organised you need to break them but if you wait one or two seconds the moment is gone.

“But if you play fast I think we can break them.”

Good news for Liverpool? Barcelona will NOT be making a move for Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Liverpool have received a boost in their hopes of signing Virgil van Dijk from Southampton after Barcelona cooled their interest in the centre-back.

The defender was on the radar of the Catalan giants, who are on the lookout for defensive reinforcements in the winter transfer window.

Van Dijk’s potential switch to Liverpool was the transfer saga of the summer, with the Reds having to publicly apologise to the Saints for alledgedly illegally approaching the player.

But the rumours refused to dry up and the Netherlands international was still heavily linked with making a move to Anfield.

However, Van Dijk stayed put at Southampton and Barcelona were then credited with showing an interest in the defender.

But, according to Mundo Deportivo, Barca have now cooled their interest in the 26-year-old as they believe he is too expensive.
