Mauricio Pellegrino with no fresh injury concerns

Show/hide article…

As Saints step up their preparations for the West Brom clash this coming weekend, Mauricio Pellegrino has only an ongoing injury to fullback Jérémy Pied to contend with, after confirming the remainder of his squad are all likely to be available.

The Frenchman has only made one appearance this term, during the EFL Cup defeat to Wolves, with Portuguese defender Cédric favoured for all Premier League encounters.

Asked about the fitness of his team, the manager responded: “We have Jérémy Pied that is coming back, he is the only one who is in trouble right now. Nothing else.”

With his squad in seemingly good shape approaching the Albion tie, Pellegrino is hoping to further build on the character shown during Saints’ second-half resurgence against Newcastle.

He added: "The reaction and personality of the team to push them [Newcastle] was good, in terms of character of the team was right.

“In the end the point is not good enough, we need to convert this in to victories and three points. But the reaction of the team was positive.”

Sky Sports has announced 17 live matches in December, with both the Manchester and Merseyside derbies to be shown on one Super Sunday.

Both Liverpool vs Everton and Manchester United vs Manchester City will be shown on a bumper Nissan Super Sunday on December 10, the day after Chelsea go to London rivals West Ham in the early Saturday kick-off.

Both derbies will be of huge significance ahead of a busy festive period, which kicks off with Arsenal vs Liverpool on Friday Night Football on December 22.

There is plenty more to look forward in the lead up to Christmas with Everton vs Chelsea and Leicester vs Manchester United live on Sky on December 23, while December’s Monday Night Football offering sees Everton host Swansea on the 18th.

Tottenham host Southampton at Wembley in the early kick-off on Boxing Day, before Swansea go to Liverpool in the tea-time showdown.

Manchester and Merseyside Derbies to be televised on the same day

Show/hide article…

The Manchester and Merseyside derbies are the pick of the December football TV schedule after they were moved back 24 hours to be shown live on Sky Sports.

United and City will now meet at Old Trafford on Sunday December 10, with the game kicking off at 4.30pm, a little more than two hours after Liverpool and Everton face-off in the Merseyside Derby on what promises to be a dramatic day of football.

There will be no games on Christmas Eve, following backlash from fans over Arsenal’s proposed clash with Liverpool, which will now take place on Friday December 22.

Leicester City against Manchester United was also discussed as a potential Christmas Eve game which, if played, would have been the first Christmas Eve game scheduled by the top flight since December 1995.

Tottenham v Southampton and Liverpool v Swansea will be shown on Boxing Day, with Newcastle’s home game with Manchester City being shown live the next day.

In another high profile game Premier League leaders Manchester City welcome Mauricio Pochettino’s third-placed Tottenham just nine days before Christmas for a 5.30pm Saturday clash on December 16, in what is the first of two appearances for the two sides on the new BT slate.

The month begins with Arsenal’s home clash with Manchester United on December 2, while other notable fixtures include West Ham v Chelsea on December 9, West Ham v Arsenal on December 13 and Everton v Chelsea on December 23.

Sky Sports and BT Sport have only announced their fixtures up to December 28, with the month’s remaining games to be announced at a later date.

Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City and Everton each feature five times, with reigning champions Chelsea and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool televised on four occasions.

Pellegrino’s Pulis praise

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has revealed his respect for West Brom manager Tony Pulis.

Baggies boss Pulis is a seasoned veteran of the Premier League and has proven himself time and again at a string of different clubs.

Pellegrino, on the other hand, is experiencing his first months in charge of an English top flight team, and is a great admirer of the way Pulis has sustained a successful career.

“It is a manager with a lot of experience,” said Pellegrino of Pulis ahead of the game between Saints and West Brom at St Mary’s tomorrow.

“I remember him when he was with Stoke when I was at Liverpool many years ago and he built a lot of teams from zero and transformed them to be really competitive. He’s really clever for me.

“The reputation for this manager and to be a lot of years in the Premier League you need capacity, personality and talent.

“I respect him and his job.”

Saints do know what to expect from Pulis’ side.

They will likely be well organised, defensively sound and will get men behind the ball and make themselves difficult to break down.

“I expect the team to be really well organised, waiting together, pressing together when they think they are fresh enough to do it, playing long, win the second ball, set plays trying to be a threat,” reflected Pellegrino.

“I expect this and I know it will be difficult but I feel my players every single week we learn how to play like this and approach this type of games.”

Saints have no new injury concerns for the match, with the only doubt surrounding Jeremy Pied, who is returning from a minor problem.

After twice coming back from a goal down but only managing a draw against Newcastle last weekend, Pellegrino is desperate to get another win on the board against the Baggies.

He admitted he was pleased with the way his players reacted against the Magpies, but insists his side need to turn promising positions into wins from now on.

“I think that it was really a chaotic game, even from the beginning because they score for me without deserving too much but that is part of football,” admitted Pellegrino.

“We were behind them and behind the game all the time and after equalising we concede again and this was a difficult moment.

“The reaction of the team, the personality of the team, to push them was really good and in terms of character the tempo of the team was right.

“At the end the point is not good enough because we need to convert these starts into victories and three points, but if we think about how was the game, the reaction I think was important.”

Mauricio Pellegrino admits Southampton suffer from ‘anxiety’ at St Mary’s

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino admits his side’s poor form at home is an issue and has challenged his players to lift the mood around St Mary’s against West Brom.

The Saints have recorded just one win at home since the start of the campaign - a narrow 3-2 win over West Ham in the second round of Premier League fixtures.

Southampton were forced to come from behind twice to draw 2-2 with Newcastle on Sunday, prompting Dusan Tadic to admit the team are “nervous” playing on home turf.

Pellegrino admits his side are suffering from “anxiety” but believes they can use that nervous energy to their advantage when they face West Brom on Saturday night.

“It is a fact that we are not getting really good results [at home], not just in this season but from last season,” said Pellegrino. "Some players who have been here longer than me can feel this anxiety, but it is normal.

"At the top level there are up and downs all the time in every single game. You have to survive and have to challenge this type of moment.

"When you have anxiety, sometimes it has a relationship with excitement. When you are excited it is because you want to do it right. It is part of the game.

"Anxiety can be something positive - when you want to do your best way, your best performance.

“It would be worse if you feel nothing.”

Southampton were booed by their own supporters during the draw with Newcastle and Pellegrino admits his side have struggled to entertain on home turf this season.

“We use football to try and be happy every weekend, and sometimes we cannot,” he said. "We are fighting with others and in society today we need to be stimulated all the time, to be excited, to be happy and sometimes it is not good enough.

“We want to play well, to score goals, it is part of our job to understand the people. We have to give our best to show the people we want to win and I think the crowd will be behind us.”

Southampton host a West Brom side who are currently one place above the Saints in the Premier League table.

The Baggies are also struggled for form, having not won in the league since August 19, but Pellegrino is expecting a tough test against Tony Pulis’ side.

“He is a manager with a lot of experience. I remember him when he was at Stoke when I was at Liverpool,” said Pellegrino.

“He builds teams from zero and transforms this team into being really competitive. He is a really clever manager.”
