Show/hide article…

THE MATCH

West Bromwich Albion vs Southampton

Saturday 17th February, 3pm GMT

The Hawthorns

Emirates FA Cup

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

After a meeting in the Premier League just two weeks ago, where Saints emerged victorious with a 3-2 scoreline, there’s a place in the FA Cup quarter final up for grabs.

These sides met at the same stage of the competition back in 1976, when Southampton lifted the famous trophy. After a 1-1 draw in the first leg, a Mick Channon hat-trick inspired a 4-0 win at The Dell.

Saints progressed beyond Fulham and Watford, both by a 1-0 scoreline, to reach this stage, while hosts West Bromwich Albion saw off Exeter City before a 3-2 victory at Anfield.

TEAM NEWS

West Brom: Loan signing Daniel Sturridge was withdrawn after just three minutes in their 3-0 defeat at Chelsea, while Egyptian international defender Ali Gabr could make his debut. The 29-year-old is now available for selection after being granted a work permit.

Southampton: Shane Long is a doubt with a hamstring injury and could join long-term absentee Charlie Austin on the sidelines for this trip to his former club.

West Bromwich Albion v Southampton

Show/hide article…

West Brom could hand January loan signing Ali Gabr his first-team debut against Southampton in the fifth-round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

The Egypt international defender, 29, has secured a work permit in time, but forward Daniel Sturridge is still out injured with a hamstring problem.

For the Saints, striker Manolo Gabbiadini could feature with Shane Long facing a late fitness test.

Midfielder Mario Lemina has recovered from dizzy spells and is fit to play.

The match comes two days after four West Brom players were interviewed by police after allegedly stealing a taxi from outside a fast-food restaurant in Barcelona.

Baggies manager Alan Pardew admitted it is tough being unable to call on Sturridge, who joined on loan from Liverpool last month.

“Sturridge has a hamstring injury - we don’t think it’s that serious but will probably keep him out of the next two games,” he said.

“It’s crucial we try and get him back and ready for the run-in because I think he can make the difference for us.”

Pardew’s side lost 3-0 at Chelsea on Monday, plunging them further into trouble at the foot of the table.

But the ex-West Ham and Reading boss said he is not ruing his decision to take over from former West Brom manager Tony Pulis in November.

“No regrets [about taking the job] because it’s a great club,” he said. "It’s been a tough week for us, for me, and for the fans.

“It will be a tough game for Southampton because we’re in the mood for a game I can tell you.”

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino insists his team can cope with a cup tie which comes before five games he branded “fundamental” to their own Premier League survival fight.

Saints, who are 18th in the league and six points ahead of the rock-bottom Baggies, return to the Hawthorns just two weeks after their 3-2 league win there.

The St Mary’s outfit then face Burnley, Stoke, Newcastle, Swansea and West Ham in five crucial clashes following Saturday’s fifth-round encounter.

“Yes, they are fundamental games, and obviously every single game will be crucial,” said Pellegrino.

"But you can’t think about the big picture all the time, you’ve got to think about refocusing our job day by day.

“We have to understand now when you’ve got this possibility, the cup is an amazing thing.”

Opposition View: West Brom

Show/hide article…

In a week that has seen significant changes at board level and potential disciplinary action following a squad trip to Barcelona, Pardew wants to see his team bounce back with a win to reach the Emirates FA Cup quarter-finals.

“I want to see a response on the football pitch,” he said. “It has to be the right response and we must make sure that we put in a tough game.

“It’s been a tough week for us, for me, and for the fans. It will be a tough game for Southampton because we’re in the mood for a game, I can tell you. After the events of the last few days, a win is important for us.”

The former Saints coach went on to confirm that striker Daniel Sturridge is likely to sit out the next two games after reporting a hamstring injury in Monday’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

“Sturridge is not available,” he said. “He has a hamstring injury that we don’t think is serious but will probably keep him out of the next two games.”

West Brom v Southampton preview: Baggies hope to end tough week by reaching FA Cup last eight

West Brom v Southampton preview: Baggies hope to end tough week by reaching FA Cup last eight

West Brom’s preparations for this weekend’s FA Cup fifth-round tie against Southampton have been overshadowed by “an incident” during the club’s training trip to Spain this week.

The Baggies have announced they are investigating after four senior players broke a curfew imposed on them - and Albion boss Alan Pardew admitted in his pre-match press conference the episode is “not ideal”.

The quartet - later revealed as Jonny Evans, Gareth Barry, Jake Livermore and Boaz Myhill - will be “subject to the full rigours of our internal disciplinary procedures” but they will be available for selection against the Saints, although Livermore is injured.

It has been a turbulent week for West Brom - who are bottom of the Premier League and seven points adrift of safety - with chairman John Williams and chief executive Martin Goodman sacked the day after the 3-0 defeat by Chelsea.

Pardew will demand a response from his players after his attempts at boosting morale in Barcelona back-fired, but he insists he is not regretting his decision to replace Tony Pulis as manager in November.

“No regrets [about taking the job] because it’s a great club,” he said. “It’s been a tough week for us, for me, and for the fans. It will be a tough game for Southampton because we’re in the mood for a game I can tell you.”

Pardew was in charge of the Saints between July 2009 and August 2010, but was humbled on home soil by his former employers when they ran out 3-2 winners at The Hawthorns earlier this month.

Boss Mauricio Pellegrino believes Southampton must go all out for victory this weekend, even though Premier League survival remains the clear overall priority.

“We have to understand now when you’ve got this possibility, the cup is an amazing thing,” said Pellegrino.

"In the recent two weeks we’ve had a game against them, but I imagine both teams will try to adjust to try to improve. And when you’ve got good knowledge about the opponent it will be really tight.

"We want to move forward to the next round. Also it can help us to improve as a team, to introduce some players that didn’t play too much in the recent game. It can help us to believe more in our improvements since January.

"For those aspects it will be important to play seriously, try to win the game, try to do our best, and both teams have got nothing to lose.

“You have to go forward because it’s like a final. We’ve got this possibility and it’s amazing.”

West Brom may hand Egypt international Ali Gabr his first-team debut against Southampton after he joined on loan in January.

The 29-year-old has secured a work permit in time, but forward Daniel Sturridge is out injured with a hamstring problem.

Hal Robson-Kanu is a doubt with a hamstring injury, while Sturridge joins Nacer Chadli (thigh), Livermore (hamstring) and James Morrison (Achilles) on the sidelines.

Saints striker Shane Long will face a late fitness test after he picked up a leg problem in training making him a doubt to feature at The Hawthorns, so Manolo Gabbiadini could come into Pellegrino’s reckoning to start.

Mario Lemina has recovered from dizzy spells and will be available for selection.

The last three times these sides have met in the FA Cup the tie has gone to a replay, with Southampton progressing on the last two occasions.

Southampton have won their last three meetings with West Brom in all competitions, including a 3-2 win at The Hawthorns earlier this month.

The last time a Premier League team won away against another Premier League team twice in the same calendar month was Man City at Swansea in September 2016.

The Saints have not reached the FA Cup quarter-finals since the 2004-05 campaign, losing each of their last four fifth-round ties.

West Brom have lost their last three games in a row, conceding exactly three goals in each game, this after winning three of the previous four (D1).

Jay Rodriguez has scored seven goals in his last 10 FA Cup appearances.

Who wants this game less? Which line-up will they play? The win West Brom got at Exeter, when Jay Rodriguez and Salomon Rondon scored, put them on a nice little run which made you think they could get out of the relegation mix.

I think West Brom will be marginally more positive as they’re at home and I’m going for Rodriguez to score against his old club in a tetchy affair.

Charlie predicts: 1-0 and Rodriguez to score first (25/1 with Sky Bet)

Manuel Pellegrino: Manolo Gabbiadini must be ready when called upon

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has challenged Manolo Gabbiadini to be ‘really well-prepared’, but admitted the Italy striker remains crucial to Southampton’s Premier League survival fight.

Gabbiadini has bagged just three goals this term and is struggling for fluency with Saints, but could be handed a start in Saturday’s FA Cup fifth-round clash at West Brom.

The 26-year-old has not repeated his blistering start for Saints when he hit six goals in four games following his £14.6million move from Napoli in January 2017.

And when quizzed on the Italian forward’s role at Saints, Pellegrino insisted Gabbiadini must keep working hard to push himself back into a regular starting berth.

‘Manolo has to be prepared; the players have to be really well-prepared,’ said Pellegrino. 'Our reaction on the pitch is about preparation before the game. It’s about what you did in your past, how you prepare every single week.

'The attitude is a preview of the preparation to move to the action and this is the most important thing at this level.

‘He played against Spurs at home and he didn’t have many chances but for me he’s a really important player for the club; we need him.’

Saints claimed a vital 3-2 Premier League win at West Brom just two weeks ago, and will head back to the Hawthorns seeking another morale-boosting victory on Saturday.

The St Mary’s outfit finished eighth in the league last term, but have dropped into the relegation zone under new boss Pellegrino - and now face a genuine survival scrap.

Pellegrino’s men are eyeing a pivotal league run against Burnley, Stoke, Newcastle, Swansea and West Ham after their cup interlude, but the Argentinian insists no focus will be lost this weekend.

Pellegrino also backed new striker Guido Carrillo to find his feet at St Mary’s despite drawing a blank since his £19.2million from Monaco last month.

‘Goals and chances are obviously the most important things for a striker,’ said Pellegrino.

‘But you realise quickly when someone wants to help the team, we’re looking for this, and he’s done that in the last two games. The strikers need help from everyone to create and convert chances.’
