Spurs injury latest: Walker and Wanyama doubts for Southampton clash

Show/hide article…

Kyle Walker and Victor Wanyama are injury doubts for Tottenham’s clash with Southampton on Sunday.

Walker turned an ankle at home on Monday, while Wanyama is struggling to shake off the knock to the neck he picked up during last week’s FA Cup quarter-final win over Millwall.

If Walker misses out, Spurs would be without both their first-choice full-backs, as Danny Rose has been absent since sustaining a knee injury in the 0-0 draw at Sunderland on January 31.

Kieran Trippier would deputise for Walker if the England international does not recover while if Wanyama is missing, manager Mauricio Pochettino may be forced into a tactical switch.

The natural replacement for Wanyama alongside fit-again Mousa Dembele would be Eric Dier - but Dier has been part of Spurs’ three-man defence in recent weeks.

If Dier moves into midfield, Pochettino may revert to a 4-2-3-1 formation - or use Kevin Wimmer in a back three and stick to 3-4-2-1.

Blackburn v Preston preview

Show/hide article…

Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray could have Charlie Mulgrew and Sam Gallagher back for Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship clash with Preston.

Defender Mulgrew and striker Gallagher have both missed the last two games with hamstring problems, but have returned to training and will be assessed.

Midfielder Corry Evans is also nearing a return to action after a groin injury which has sidelined him since January, although the Preston match will come too soon for him.

Rovers are unbeaten in six games since Mowbray replaced Owen Coyle last month, but are only a point clear of the drop zone.

Preston boss Simon Grayson will have decisions to make on three players before naming his squad for the trip.

Alex Baptiste and Marnick Vermijl have both come through a full week of training, but may need the international break to be fully fit and ready to return to action.

Paul Gallagher, who missed last week’s win over Reading, will also be monitored before the squad is selected.

John Welsh, Calum Woods and Tyias Browning remain sidelined, but are all making good progress from their respective injuries.

Manchester United FC news: Have the Red Devils had it easy in the cups this season?

Show/hide article…

Jose Mourinho is on course to win a cup double with Manchester United this season.

Having already claimed the EFL Cup – beating Southampton 3-2 in the final – the Red Devils have focused their attention on Europe.

A 2-1 aggregate win over FC Rostov of Russia has put United through to the quarter-finals of the Europa League, where they will face Anderlecht of Belgium.

However, Mourinho is not happy, making incessant complaints about the amount of games United have to play and the congested fixture list.

Roy Keane hit out at Mourinho over his complaints, highlighting how the squad he has and the easy cup draws United have been given means the Portuguese has no right to be aggrieved.

"I’ve never heard so much rubbish in my life,” Keane told ITV Sport. “Why do we have to listen to that garbage?

"It’s just utter nonsense what he’s talking about. He’s manager of Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs on the planet. The squad he’s got… and he keeps moaning about fixtures and fatigue.

"We were just looking at some of the cup draws they’ve had. They’ve had an easy ride in the cups; some good draws and a lot of home draws. The guy’s talking absolute nonsense. I’ve never heard so much rubbish in my life.”

But, is Keane right in claiming the Old Trafford club have ‘had an easy ride in the cups?’

Knocked out of England’s biggest cup competition on Monday evening, United performed admirably against Premier League leaders and cup favourites Chelsea. Despite being down to 10 men from the 35th minute onwards, Mourinho’s side put in a superb defensive showing, and only conceded once from a surprising source – N’Golo Kante converting a rare long-range strike.

However, it took until the sixth round clash against the Blues for Mourinho’s side to come up against a tough opponent.

In the three previous rounds, United had to play three Championship teams - only one of which could be considered a strong side.

Reading came into the game in good form, but were never expected to win at Old Trafford, whilst out-of-form Wigan stood no chance at the Theatre of Dreams.

Blackburn posed a tougher test at Ewood Park, but are fighting relegation, and succumbed to an expected defeated.

This was definitely a competition United were fortunate in, losing as soon as they came up against a top class opponent.

Winners of the League Cup, beating Southampton in the final, United had a fairly tough time in reaching the final.

Northampton Town were dispatched with ease in the third round, but the following three opponents were all Premier League sides.

Manchester City travelled to Old Trafford in the fourth round, but Pep Guardiola selected a weakened team; they promptly lost 1-0.

Following that win, United hosted West Ham and won 4-1. An impressive result, but less impressive considering the dreadful form shown by the Hammers at that stage of the season.

Hull were beaten over two legs in the semi-finals, Mourinho’s men winning 2-0 at home and losing 2-1 away. Truthfully, the Red Devils were very poor, and really should have performed better than they did.

To win the competition, Southampton were overcome at Wembley. Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored a late winner in what was a remarkably poor showing from United, with many believing the Saints were by far the most impressive team.

Considering the Red Devils had to play four Premier League teams in five rounds of the League Cup, the run to the final was impressive. The teams they played may have been out of form and much-changed, but the record books will shine kindly on Mourinho and his charges.

Only qualifying for Europe’s secondary competition, United were always going to be classed as one of the favourites for a tournament they have never won throughout their history.

Still, they only finished second in their group – behind Fenerbahce – losing away matches to the Turkish side and Feyenoord.

Ukraine’s Zorya Luhansk were the fourth team Mourinho’s men faced in the group stage, with their three opponents making up a fairly easy path for United to the knockout phase.

Overcoming Saint-Etienne in the round of 32 was a truly impressive feat, especially by the 4-0 aggregate scorline.

One of the stronger teams in France, Les Verts were downed with ease by the Red Devils.

The round of 16 pitted United against Rostov, winning over both legs by a 2-1 scoreline. Heavy favourites to progress, United still found it hard against the Russians.

With the draw for the quarter-finals made, and Anderlecht pulled out the hat, Mourinho will be pleased at the fairly easy tie for United.

Certainly one of the weaker teams left in the competition, the Portuguese should be able to lead the Red Devils to the semi-final – and maybe even to the final.

Should Manchester United go all the way, and win the Europa League, no one will be able to decry their achievement - regardless of the level of opponent they had to play on the route to success.

Well, no one except Liverpool fans…

Will Paul Pogba be an Angel Di Maria or a Roy Keane? British record transfers ranked from worst to first

Show/hide article…

Paul Pogba is struggling to live up to his billing as British football’s most expensive ever signing having returned to Manchester United from Juventus in a whopping £89.3million deal last summer.

The 24-year-old Frenchman is not the first player to feel the burden of a hefty price tag, however, with history providing plenty of evidence to back that up.

It’s impossible to rank Pogba in the list of all-time British record transfers until his United career comes to an end, but at the moment it would be fair to say he’s closer to Angel di Maria than Roy Keane in the Old Trafford value for money stakes.

Pogba became the 24th man to break the record since Trevor Francis became British football’s first £1million man in 1979. But who were the best and worst of the previous 23? talkSPORT takes a look…

Remember the Ted Bates statue that caused outcry among fans? It’s exactly 10 years since it was unveiled

Show/hide article…

Remember the Ted Bates statue that caused uproar among Saints fans? It’s been 10 years since the infamous statue was unveiled.

The statue outside St Mary’s was first unveiled on March 17, 2007, but had to be pulled down after critics likened it to 80s TV entertainer Jimmy Krankie, US president George Bush and even former Pompey owner Milan Mandaric.

In the days after the club erected the statue, which cost £112,000, Saints officials pledged to hold crisis talks with the Ted Bates Trust after hundreds of supporters condemned it.

It took less than a week for the club to pull it down, before a replacement was installed outside the stadium in March 2008.

Ted Bates served Southampton FC for 66 years in several guises before his death in November 2003, at the age of 85.

He signed for the club as a teenage striker 60 years ago, and formed a prolific partnership with Charlie Wayman before becoming a coach when his playing career ended in 1952.

Ted managed the club for 18 years before handing the reins to Lawrie McMenemy in 1973, but spent a further 20 years as a club director before stepping down in 1993.

In 1998, he received an MBE in recognition of his services to football and was made club president before being made a Freeman of the City of Southampton a year later.

Tottenham Hotspur v Southampton

Show/hide article…

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is expected to pick Son Heung-min in place of injured striker Harry Kane.

Midfielder Mousa Dembele is fit, but Kyle Walker and Victor Wanyama are doubts with minor knocks.

Southampton manager Claude Puel has no fresh injury worries and he could pick the same team that beat Watford.

Striker Charlie Austin is edging closer to a return from a shoulder problem, but defender Virgil van Dijk remains a long-term injury absentee.

Simon Brotherton: "Last week’s FA Cup thrashing of Millwall came at a heavy price for Tottenham, who now face four to six weeks without their star striker Harry Kane.

"It’s his second spell on the sidelines this season and others will need to step up if they’re to maintain any sort of a challenge to Chelsea at the top. Spurs have already played top-flight opposition without Kane in the team nine times in the current campaign. In those nine matches, they managed only three wins and eight goals.

"Finding the net hasn’t been a problem for Southampton lately, who have won their last two away games at Sunderland and Watford, scoring four in each of them.

“They also won this fixture last season 2-1, inflicting a first defeat for Mauricio Pochettino against his former club.”

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino: “We have to find a solution until Harry [Kane] is available again. We have players who can cope with the pressure and it’s a great opportunity for Sonny [Son Heung-min] and Vincent [Janssen].”

"We are not worried, we are in good condition. We hope it will be different [to the last time Kane was injured]. I think the team now is completely different, that was in September.

“It was a difficult pre-season after the Euros and we are in a completely different level. The team is now more solid. We have improved a lot since that period.”

Southampton manager Claude Puel: "They [Tottenham] have a lot of wins at home, so it’s a good challenge for us.

“It will be interesting to see our progress. It’s difficult with one game every two weeks to keep concentration, but it’s important to have a good response at Tottenham.”

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has been making all the right noises about how his side will cope without the injured Harry Kane, but they will undoubtedly miss him.

Southampton are a strange team and very difficult to predict, but I am going to go for a scruffy Spurs win - even without Kane, they still should have enough.

Austin returns to Saints fold

Show/hide article…

SAINTS top-scorer Charlie Austin was back in first-team training today as he continues his comeback from a dislocated shoulder.

Austin has been out since early December, having suffered the injury in Saints’ Europa League draw with Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

The nine-goal striker joined his team-mates at Staplewood and Puel admitted it was “great” to see the 27-year-old back on the pitch.

The St Mary’s chief also revealed that long-term absentee Jeremy Pied is back in training with the under-23s.

The attacking right-back was brought in by Puel last summer, but sustained a nasty knee injury in training in August.

Ahead of Saints’ match with Tottenham on Sunday, Puel said: “We still have the injury with Virgil van Dijk, Alex McCarthy, but Jeremy Pied has come back to train with the under-23s and next week he can come in with us. It’s good news.

“The other good news also is Charlie Austin came out with us today without opposition but it’s great to see him on the pitch and we will see when he can come back with the group with intensity and opposition.

Southampton boss Claude Puel couldn’t resist pranking England duo Nathan Redmond and ‘son-in-law’ James Ward-Prowse

Show/hide article…

James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond thought they were in trouble when Southampton boss Claude Puel hauled them into his office.

But the Southampton duo were delighted when they left after their manager told them they had been named in the England squad.

Midfielder Ward-Prowse and winger-turned-striker Redmond were two of England boss Gareth Southgate’s surprise choices for the forthcoming internationals against Germany and Lithuania.

And Puel could not resist teasing the uncapped pair before giving them the good news.

“I told them I had a problem with their attitude in the training session, and to ask their opinion,” said the Frenchman.

"Then after I told them the news I said I couldn’t understand why.

"But of course it’s fantastic for them and for the club. It’s a good thing for them and congratulations to them and to the club.

“All the staff who train them have been important for their progress and it’s a good reward for all.”

Ward-Prowse has been with Southampton since the age of eight, and the club celebrated his call-up by posting a video of him as a 13-year-old stating his desire to play for England.

Such is the impression Ward-Prowse has made on Puel, the 22-year-old would even have his manager’s blessing to ask his daughter out.

“The policy in this club for a lot of seasons has been to work with quality, for the promotion and evolution of young players, and it’s important we continue,” added Puel.

"You can see with James, I looked at the interview when he was young, it was the same spirit - I think James is the ideal son-in-law!

"He’s an intelligent player, he wants to make progress. It’s easy to train James.

"For Nathan, he’s also a talented player, but sometimes he didn’t listen enough. But he has made progress since the beginning of the season.

"It’s important he understands he has all the quality to become a very good striker with his feet and his quality. He can score all the goals and give good assists.

“It’s a good reward for them and their work.”
