Saints close in on Hoedt deal

Show/hide article…

Saints are closing in on a deal for centre half Wesley Hoedt as Virgil van Dijk’s stand-off continues.

Mauricio Pellegrino admitted he is in the market for another central defender during the transfer window with Italian media reporting that Saints have agreed a £15m fee for Lazio’s Hoedt.

The Daily Echo understands that Saints see Hoedt as an addition to the current squad rather than a replacement for van Dijk, who they have insisted is not for sale despite his transfer request.

Assuming Saints stand firm and do hang on to van Dijk, they cannot be sure how the 26-year-old will react when the window closes, and so need another option, even if it means ending up with one more central defender than they perhaps ideally need.

Pellegrino said: “Yes, because as you know right now it’s the position that we are in disadvantage.

“I think it’s an area where we can improve with another player.

“I prefer to have a solution on the pitch, instead of problems on the pitch. I can manage that situation.

“Sometimes you have to make decisions as quickly as possible, because the competition will not wait for us.”

Hoedt, 23, is a Dutch international who started his career at AZ in the Netherlands before signing for Lazio in 2015.

His age and profile fits perfectly with the type of player that Saints like to recruit and should the deal be completed then he will be immediately competing for a place with Jack Stephens, Maya Yoshida and Jan Bednarek with van Dijk possibly to return to the squad and Florin Gardos on the fringes.

If Saints cannot get the Hoedt deal done then they will switch their attentions to another centre half.

Speaking of Hoedt specifically Pellegrino said: “I know the player but I will not talk about the market because when you talk about it a negotiation is 80 per cent of 90 per cent the negotiation is either 100 per cent or zero per cent.

“When he signs the player for you but before that I have nothing to say.”

He is back from his virus but still won’t be considered for first team duties due to his desire to leave the club.

“The Virgil situation nothing has changed. It is the same like last week,” confirmed Pellegrino.

“I don’t have anything to say.”

Hammers style could suit Saints

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino is hoping that West Ham’s attacking nature will suit his team when the sides meet at the weekend.

Slaven Bilic’s side come into tomorrow’s game at St Mary’s on the back of a 4-0 hiding at the hands of Manchester United, while Saints were frustrated in a goalless draw against Swansea on the opening day.

It is an important match for both sides who will be desperate for a win to get their seasons really going.

Swansea came to St Mary’s and got numbers behind the ball, frustrating Saints who couldn’t find space in behind or between the lines.

The Hammers – who would have been playing at home tomorrow were it not for a fixture switch due to the Olympic Stadium having hosted the World Athletics Championships - are likely to be a more attacking prospect, which on paper should suit Saints.

Pellegrino reckoned: “Normally it’s a team that wants to press, wants to attack, keep the ball, be aggressive and pressing the opposition.

“I think we have to be there and we have to control the ball like we did against Swansea.

“We know that it will be a difficult game.”

He added: “West Ham is a strong team and for me it will be a tough, a really difficult game.

“We never know what will happen in the future in the game. Football is an unpredictable sport.

“They sign players with experience, players that have quality to create problems, but for us I think we have to keep going in the same way, keep playing in different aspects in the same way we did against Swansea.

“We know right now that it will be a really difficult game.”

Pellegrino has a fully fit squad to pick from with Ryan Bertrand having recovered from a minor knock and Alex McCarthy ready to take a place on bench.

While Pellegrino has been focussing on West Ham, there have been plenty of off the field distractions at the club over the last week.

The top of that list was the Chinese takeover, with the Gao family paying Katharina Liebherr £210m for an 80 per cent stake in the club.

Pellegrino, though, is not expecting any significant changes straightaway.

“At the beginning nothing will change, everything will continue in the same way. All the board will continue,” he insisted.

“Obviously little by little I imagine the new owners want to know us and to be in contact but not now.”

Saints chairman Ralph Krueger has also been in the headlines after his major interview with the Daily Echo in the wake of the deal with the Gao’s.

Amongst the topics covered by Krueger was his belief that the transfer window should close before the start of the season, which would have saved Saints the stress they are currently experiencing with Virgil van Dijk while also trying to prepare for matches.

Pellegrino concurred: “I am agreeing with that.

“I would like to know and to keep all my players focused in our competition, in our responsibilities.

“Because to talk about the transfer market right now when we are competing, it’s not good for them and it’s not good for us.

“At the end always there is a lot of movement, I would imagine in the next few days there will be movement because people will wait until the end to make good business. So I expect deals to happen.”

The West Ham Way is now the Southampton Way

Show/hide article…

The West Ham Way? Remember that? It’s changed so much. But one laughable aspect of the way the Hammers do things remains steadfastly in place.

That’s their weak-minded capability to roll over and capitulate against the big teams (and some smaller ones) in a feeble style un-matched with such regularity anywhere else in the Premier League.

Already, the 4-0 humiliation they suffered at Manchester United last Sunday has made this weekend’s trip to Southampton more fraught than it needs to have been.

There will be added scrutiny of the result and performance on the South Coast because of the way in which Slaven Bilic’s side surrendered at Old Trafford.

For that immediate reason, it is welcome news that the robust pair of Michail Antonio and Cheikhou Kouyate may be available for the game after recovering from injury.

The team needs to toughen up. Quickly.

In fact, it makes this a good time to set aside all those fallacies about the Hammers’ unquenchable penchant for elegant, lovely football and about their much-marketed Academy, too. It all happened decades ago.

Those ideas are actually practised with more conviction these days by Saturday’s opponents, who have a well-defined philosophy which produces young players and attempts to create a technical style of play whoever is manager.

Funnily enough, they call it The Southampton Way. And it put them in eighth place in the final table last season.

West Ham, meanwhile, have chosen a different path in their awkward new home at the London Stadium.

For example, it’s been made clear by the board that there will be little room for young players to break into the side regularly in future.

The demands of the modern Premier League mean they have to buy in ready-made seasoning and experience, they say – with much justification, in fact, given that West Ham see themselves as a bigger club than the Saints.

It certainly made good sense when Bilic signed the physically powerful pair of Marko Arnautovic and Pablo Zabaleta during the summer

It was recognition that the team was seriously lacking strength as well as pace last season.

The pursuit of Sporting Lisbon’s defensive midfielder William Carvalho - once described as a new Patrick Vieira - underlines this idea, even if it should temper the excitement which greeted the appearance of 18-year-old Declan Rice amid the carnage in midfield in Manchester last Sunday.

But having chosen this path – and added to the disgruntlement of many supporters who despair at the changes in the nature of the club - they now have to make it work.

That’s the trade-off required for the abandonment of much-cherished Upton Park. So far, there is little sign of it.

To get things straight, the so-called West Ham Way was represented by the tough, physical and honest attitudes of Billy Bonds as much as it was by the deft magic of Sir Trevor Brooking and Alan Devonshire.

It is Bonzo who is the all-time greatest hero of the fans – even more so than Bobby Moore – which is why the club, with all its PR troubles, should heed the campaign to get a stand named after him in Stratford.

True enough, all of those players had more bad times than good. That’s the West Ham way, too. They were often seen as a soft touch. Especially Up North.

So even now, it will be welcome progress if Bilic makes his side more combative and muscular.

Yet last Sunday’s performance at Old Trafford contained too many echoes of the thrashings suffered against Manchester City (twice), Arsenal and Liverpool last season .

It means that many fans already fear nothing has changed on the pitch, even if so much has been altered off it.

True enough, Jose Mourinho’s side were bursting with power and purpose following the arrival of Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic. It just made West Ham’s collapse all the more inevitable in what is supposed to be the world’s most competitive league.

The Hammers’ long injury list was irrelevant, too. This is a squad game nowadays.

Southampton are not from the newly-minted Big Seven. And West Ham won 3-1 there last February.

But they are a club with a detailed sense of structure, mission, identity and talent production similar to the ideas cherished by supporters in east London.

West Ham won’t play at home for more than three weeks - until September 11 - in the aftermath of the world athletics championship.

Even that is somehow typical of the club’s haphazard ways.

So they urgently need to change the mood around them at Southampton. Or the West Ham Way so embarrassingly on display last weekend could become a bad habit this season.

Chelsea dealt Cedric Soares blow as Southampton demand ‘silly offer’

Show/hide article…

Chelsea will have to spend considerably more than £20m to sign Southampton defender Cedric Soares this month.

Standard Sport first revealed in April that the Portugal defender is being lined up to compete with Victor Moses for the right wing back position this season and they are now stepping up their interest.

Chelsea are prepared to pay in the region of £15m-£20m for Soares, who still has three years left on his contract.

However, it is understood that Southampton will only consider selling should they receive a ‘silly offer’.

t is believed that Soares is interested in a move to Stamford Bridge, but only if an agreement can be struck.

Chelsea’s first choice acquisition from Southampton for several months has been Virgil van Dijk, but chairman Ralph Krueger insisted earlier this week that he won’t be sold.

Southampton have just been taken over by a Chinese consortium, but there is some hope for Chelsea in that there is a suggestion coach Maurico Pellegrino has been told he will have to sell before buying any more players.

Meanwhile, Juventus have confirmed that they have rejected another approach from Chelsea for Alex Sandro.

Standard Sport revealed earlier this week that Chelsea had made another enquiry for the 26-year-old left back.

Chelsea are willing to give Sandro a contract worth in excess of £100,000-a-week and were relying on the Brazil international to ask for a move to push the deal through.

But Juventus chief executive Giuseppe Marotta claims that they turned Chelsea down after Sandro informed them he wants to remain with the in Serie A champions.

Marotta explained: “Sandro said he wants to stay at Juventus and this is a real big deal. So we automatically rejected the sender’s request.”

Mauricio Pellegrino expects new Southampton owners to use the same stable approach as the Liebherr family

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino expects Southampton’s new owners to chase the same methodical progress that underpinned the Liebherr family’s stewardship.

The Gao family from China this week completed an 80 per cent share purchase in Southampton, leaving Katharina Liebherr holding the remaining stake at the St Mary’s club.

The Liebherr family have guided Saints to mid-table Premier League security, and Pellegrino believes the new owners only want to extend that stability.

Backing the Liebherr family’s judgement on the new owners, Pellegrino said: "At the beginning nothing will change, everything will continue in the same way. All the board will continue.

"Obviously little by little I imagine the new owners want to know us and to be in contact but not now.

"I hope the new owners means the best for the club. This is my feeling right now.

"Hopefully the new owners can achieve the same progress for the club like the Liebherr family did in the past.

“In the last six years the progress was really good and hopefully it will be the best for the club. This is my feeling now.”

Southampton will host West Ham on Saturday chasing their first Premier League win of the season at the second attempt, following last weekend’s goalless draw with Swansea.

Pellegrino admitted he has yet to meet Saints’ new owners, but believes they will link up with the coaches and the squad only when the time is right.

Asked if he had met the club’s new stewards yet, Pellegrino replied: "No. We were with Ralph (Krueger) talking with the players, technical staff, the medical staff explaining the situation.

“But we were the first to know about the new owners and that’s it.”

Wantaway defender Virgil van Dijk will not be considered for selection for Saturday’s West Ham clash, but Saints remain determined not to sell the highly-prized centre-back in this transfer window.

And Pellegrino believes the Gao family back chairman Ralph Krueger’s stance that Saints will not be forced into selling Van Dijk.

Pellegrino added: "I couldn’t speak with the player, I couldn’t see him because I have been working with the team but I’ll say the same as before - hopefully Virgil can come back with the team to train with us in future but nothing has changed since last week.

“At this moment Southampton want to progress on the pitch and the idea is to keep the best players in the club.”
