GOSSIP: Saints will only accept a ‘silly offer’ for right back amid Chelsea link

Show/hide article…

SAINTS have told Chelsea they will only sell defender Cedric Soares if a ‘silly offer’ is received, according to reports.

The reigning Premier League champions are reportly ready to pay between £15-£20million, according to the Evening Standard, but Saints are keen to keep hold of the Portuguese right back, who was in the 2016 Euros winning team.

Soares still has three years left at St Mary’s under his current contract, but has been linked with a number of European giants, including Barcelona and Juventus.

But earlier in the transfer window Saints’ executive director Les Reed said the club has no intention of cashing in on Soares.

Mauricio Pellegrino hoping to make progress under new Chinese owners

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino expects Southampton’s new owners to chase the same methodical progress that underpinned the Liebherr family’s stewardship.

The Gao family from China this week completed an 80 per cent share purchase in Southampton, leaving Katharina Liebherr holding the remaining stake at the St Mary’s club.

The Liebherr family have guided Saints to mid-table Premier League security, and Pellegrino believes the new owners only want to extend that stability.

Backing the Liebherr family’s judgement on the new owners, Pellegrino said: 'At the beginning nothing will change, everything will continue in the same way. All the board will continue.

'Obviously little by little I imagine the new owners want to know us and to be in contact but not now.

'I hope the new owners means the best for the club. This is my feeling right now.

'Hopefully the new owners can achieve the same progress for the club like the Liebherr family did in the past.

‘In the last six years the progress was really good and hopefully it will be the best for the club. This is my feeling now.’

Southampton will host West Ham on Saturday chasing their first Premier League win of the season at the second attempt, following last weekend’s goalless draw with Swansea.

Pellegrino admitted he has yet to meet Saints’ new owners, but believes they will link up with the coaches and the squad only when the time is right.

Asked if he had met the club’s new stewards yet, Pellegrino replied: 'No. We were with Ralph (Krueger) talking with the players, technical staff, the medical staff explaining the situation.

‘But we were the first to know about the new owners and that’s it.’

Wantaway defender Virgil van Dijk will not be considered for selection for Saturday’s West Ham clash, but Saints remain determined not to sell the highly-prized centre-back in this transfer window.

And Pellegrino believes the Gao family back chairman Ralph Krueger’s stance that Saints will not be forced into selling Van Dijk.

Pellegrino added: 'I couldn’t speak with the player, I couldn’t see him because I have been working with the team but I’ll say the same as before - hopefully Virgil can come back with the team to train with us in future but nothing has changed since last week.

‘At this moment Southampton want to progress on the pitch and the idea is to keep the best players in the club.’

Mauricio Pellegrino welcomes Southampton takeover and predicts further progress

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino expects Southampton’s progress to continue under the club’s new Chinese owners.

This week, Jisheng Gao and his family bought 80 per cent of the club from Katharina Liebherr, who retains the remaining 20 per cent shareholding.

Liebherr inherited ownership of Southampton from her late father Markus, whose 2009 takeover began an upturn which took the club from League One to the top half of the Premier League.

And manager Pellegrino said: "Hopefully the new owners can achieve the same progress for the club like the Liebherr family did in the past.

"In the last six years the progress was really good and hopefully it will be the best for the club. This is my feeling now.

"At the beginning nothing will change, everything will continue in the same way. All the board will continue.

“Obviously little by little I imagine the new owners want to know us and to be in contact but not now. I hope the new owners means the best for the club. This is my feeling right now.”

Pellegrino’s point of contact remains chairman Ralph Krueger, whose position is unchanged despite the takeover.

Asked if he had met the new owners, the Argentine said: “No. We were with Ralph talking with the players, technical staff, the medical staff explaining the situation. But we were the first to know about the new owners and that’s it.”

Virgil van Dijk’s agent has messed up, he should have had a buyout clause - John Collins

Show/hide article…

That’s the verdict of former Celtic star and now pundit John Collins.

Van Dijk penned a bumper six-year deal at St Mary’s last summer but is not agitating for a switch to Liverpool.

The Dutch defender has handed in a transfer request but Southampton are having none of it and insist the 26-year-old is going nowhere.

And Collins thinks the situation is a mess of Van Dijk’s own making.

“Virgil van Dijk, I know Virgil very well,” Collins said on talkSPORT.

Southampton v West Ham preview: Mario Lemina could start; Virgil van Dijk still absent

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s record signing Mario Lemina could start against West Ham on Saturday, but Virgil van Dijk will not be considered for selection.

Lemina signed from Juventus this summer in a deal which could rise to £20m, but was an unused substitute in last weekend’s 0-0 draw at home to Swansea.

However, wantaway defender Van Dijk will not feature, even though Southampton remain determined not to sell the highly-prized centre-back in this transfer window.

West Ham boss Slaven Bilic said this week has “a lot of sympathy” with for Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino over the Van Dijk situation.

This is the second of three straight away games for West Ham and Bilic is hoping to bounce back after their opening 4-0 defeat at Manchester United last Sunday.

Defender Ryan Bertrand has shaken off a knock, which means Southampton have a clean bill of health for the game.

Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has returned to full fitness to take a seat on the bench, meaning Van Dijk is the only first-team player unavailable for selection.

Michail Antonio returns to the West Ham squad for the trip to the south coast.

The winger underwent a hamstring operation over the summer and was not ready for last Sunday’s defeat, but he will feature at St Mary’s.

Midfielders Cheikhou Kouyate and Manuel Lanzini (both knee) and striker Andy Carroll (thigh) remain sidelined, although all three are back in training.

Southampton have won two of their last three Premier League games against West Ham, as many as in the previous nine combined.

The Hammers won this won fixture 3-1 in 2016-17; they last won consecutive away league games against Southampton in December 1952.

Southampton attempted 29 shots in their opening Premier League match of 2017-18 versus Swansea City, but only two of these were on target (7%).

The last time West Ham lost both of their opening two games to a league season was in 2010-11, the season they suffered their second relegation from the Premier League.

Since the start of last season, St. Mary’s has seen fewer goals than any other Premier League stadium (excluding promoted sides), with just 38 goals being scored in 20 games at the ground (F17 A21).

I thought for 25 minutes West Ham were comfortable against Manchester United last weekend, but after 2-0 it was cringeworthy and worrying. If they lose this game then they have another two away games to come as well.

I heard Karren Brady on The Debate on Sky Sports saying they have four away games now but then three home games in a row in March - wow!

You need to get off to a good start in the Premier League and not be behind the eight ball. Teams at the bottom won’t win five games on the spin and I think it’s worrying for West Ham. I didn’t like what I saw. There are ways of losing matches and at the end against Man Utd it could have been anything.

Southampton had chances last week against Swansea, like that sitter Maya Yoshida missed at the back post, and I think they will get off the mark.

Southampton are Sky Bet’s 7/10 favourites for the victory with West Ham 19/5 while the draw is priced at 14/5. Manolo Gabbiadini heads the first goalscorer betting at 7/2 from Charlie Austin (4/1), while Javier Hernandez leads the visitors’ side of the market at 15/2.

Southampton v West Ham is included this week’s Super 6 line-up, with a £1m jackpot guaranteed until won. Enter your predictions for free.

Ahead of this weekend’s Premier League action, Sportsmail will be providing you with all you need to know about every fixture, with team news, provisional squads, betting odds and Opta stats. Here is all the information you need for Southampton’s home clash with West Ham.

Ryan Bertrand will be fit for Southampton’s Premier League clash with West Ham on Saturday.

The full-back has shaken off a knock in time to hand the Saints a clean bill of health for their St Mary’s clash with the Hammers.

Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has returned to full fitness to take a seat on the bench, while wantaway defender Virgil van Dijk remains unavailable for selection.

Michail Antonio returns to the West Ham squad for the trip to Southampton.

The winger underwent a hamstring operation over the summer and was not ready for last Sunday’s 4-0 defeat against Manchester United, but he will feature at St Mary’s.

Midfielders Cheikhou Kouyate and Manuel Lanzini (both knee) and striker Andy Carroll (thigh) remain sidelined, although all three are back in training.

Southampton have won two of their last three Premier League games against West Ham, as many as in the previous nine combined.

The Hammers won this won fixture 3-1 in 2016-17, they last won consecutive away league games against Southampton in December 1952.

Southampton attempted 29 shots in their opening Premier League match of 2017-18 versus Swansea City, but only two of these were on target (seven per cent).

Saints have failed to score in their last six home Premier League games – only Manchester City have ever had a longer such drought in the competition (eight games between January-May 2007).

The Hammers’ 0-4 loss at Man Utd was their biggest opening day defeat since 2002-03 (0-4 vs Newcastle); the season they suffered their first relegation from the Premier League.

Indeed, St. Mary’s has also seen more goalless draws (five) than any other ground in that time.

Southampton will be the first team to play four successive Premier League games at home since Blackpool in April 2011.

Mark Noble, who netted in West Ham’s 3-1 in February, has scored more league goals versus Southampton than any other team (five).
