Claude Puel becomes new Leicester boss

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has been named the new Leicester manager on a contract until 2020.

The Frenchman, who was sacked by Southampton in June, finalised the finer details on Tuesday and was confirmed as Craig Shakespeare’s successor on Wednesday night.

Puel will take charge of Sunday’s visit by Everton with the club in 14th, one point above their opponents in the final relegation place.

Michael Appleton retains his position as No 2, having won both his games in caretaker charge and established a positive reputation with the squad.

The 41-year-old, who left his role as Oxford manager to become Shakespeare’s assistant, led Leicester to a win at Swansea that lifted the club clear of the drop zone as well as Tuesday night’s victory over Leeds to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-final.

Sporting director Jon Rudkin has led Leicester’s search for a third manager in eight months following the sackings of Shakespeare and Claudio Ranieri and was impressed by Puel across interviews last Friday and this Monday.

The 56-year-old Frenchman was dismissed by Southampton after one season which saw the South Coast club finish eighth and reach the League Cup final. But supporters were underwhelmed by the style of play and Puel’s reserved public persona, while Southampton lost 16 Premier League games to only end up six points above 17th.

Leicester have looked beyond the most recent campaign alone to Puel’s work at Lyon, where he guided the team to a first Champions League semi-final and brought through young players. He also won Ligue 1 with Monaco in 2000. His appointment has though prompted a muted reaction among Leicester fans on social media.

Gary Lineker tweeted his reaction to the news: ‘Claude Puel? Really?’ The pundit making reference to an identical tweet he posted upon Claudio Ranieri’s appointment.

Puel will need to get to grips with a side that has beaten only Brighton and Swansea in the Premier League this campaign, but showed depth with three League Cup wins over Sheffield United, Liverpool, and Leeds. Everton will also travel to the King Power with a new manager in charge from their last Premier League outing, with David Unsworth acting as caretaker.

Leicester sacked Shakespeare nine days ago without a succession plan in place. Inquiries were made on Thomas Tuchel and David Wagner but both managers indicated against moving to the King Power, while Marco Silva was too difficult to extract from Watford.

Chris Coleman was also mentioned but he held positive discussions with the FAW over continuing as Wales manager. Sean Dyche was never interviewed.

Leicester vice-chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha said: ‘When we began the process of identifying a new manager, the board quickly established the profile of candidate we needed to take the club forward and Claude Puel was a perfect fit.

‘Upon meeting Claude, his attention to detail, knowledge of our squad, understanding of our potential and his vision to help us realise it were extremely impressive. He quickly emerged as the outstanding candidate and I am delighted we will have the opportunity to reinforce our long-term vision, aided significantly by his expertise.’

Puel said: ‘It’s a great privilege to become the new manager of Leicester City – a club whose values and ambitions are closely aligned to my own.

'The opportunity to help the club build on its remarkable recent achievements is a truly exciting one and I’m looking forward to working with the owners, players, staff and supporters to deliver further lasting success.’

Puel will face the media for the first time on Friday afternoon. It is thought Pascal Plancque, who was an assistant at Southampton last season, is one name under consideration to join as well.

Claude Puel: Leicester City appoint ex-Southampton manager

Show/hide article…

Leicester City have appointed ex-Southampton boss Claude Puel as their new manager on a three-year deal.

Puel becomes the Foxes’ third manager this year, replacing Craig Shakespeare who succeeded Premier League title winner Claudio Ranieri in February.

Puel, 56, led the Saints to eighth in his first season in charge, as well as reaching the EFL Cup final, but the Frenchman was sacked in June.

Appleton had taken caretaker charge after Shakespeare was sacked just four months after he signed a three-year deal to take the job on a permanent basis.

“Upon meeting Claude, his attention to detail, knowledge of our squad, understanding of our potential and his vision to help us realise it were extremely impressive,” he added.

“He quickly emerged as the outstanding candidate and I am delighted we will have the opportunity to reinforce our long-term vision, aided significantly by his expertise.”

Puel takes over a Foxes side 14th in the Premier League table with two wins from nine games.

The former Monaco boss, who has also had spells at Lille and Lyon, spent four years as manager of Nice before replacing Ronald Koeman at Southampton.

He said it was “a great privilege” to take over at Leicester, adding that the club’s “values and ambitions are closely aligned to my own”.

“The opportunity to help the club build on its remarkable recent achievements is a truly exciting one and I’m looking forward to working with the owners, players, staff and supporters to deliver further lasting success.”

Despite losing 16 games last season, Puel led Southampton to an eighth-placed finish in the Premier League. Their 3-2 defeat by Manchester United in the EFL Cup final at Wembley was their first major final since 2003.

But he was dismissed after managing just one win from the final eight league matches of the season, with his side scoring just once in their last six games.

Leicester City’s appointment of Claude Puel is not the arrival many expected when Craig Shakespeare was sacked - and will be regarded as an underwhelming appointment by many supporters.

Frenchman Puel was dismissed by Southampton at the end of last season after a campaign that looked good on paper but left many of the fans at St Mary’s cold with his style of play.

The problem for Puel was his understated personality that did not create any bond with Southampton’s supporters and tactics that became increasingly stodgy as the season progressed.

The Frenchman was not among anyone’s considerations when Shakespeare left, but Leicester’s board have looked at his highly respectable record at Monaco, Lille, Lyon and Nice.

He will still, however, have to make a fast start as many will still regard him as damaged goods after his sacking by Southampton and a departure that was not mourned.

Leicester have kept Michael Appleton as assistant manager alongside Puel and he will be a valuable sounding board for the new boss.

And while the appointment will raise eyebrows and have plenty of questions fired in the direction of Leicester’s owners, they will have an answer ready to those who will question their judgement.

They were met with a similar puzzled reaction when Claudio Ranieri was appointed as successor to Nigel Pearson in the summer of 2015.

It led to the most glorious season in the club’s history as they won the Premier League title - and while no-one is expecting a similar outcome, it may be unwise to write off the somewhat left-field appointment of Puel too soon.

Tom West: Bit underwhelmed by the Puel appointment, then again I was when we brought in Claudio. If he works out half as well, not bad.

Mizgan: Defensively, Leicester will be good and scoring goals from Vardy will be key to Puel’s team… 4231 would be a go-to shape…

Mark Lynch: Could it be Leicester wanted someone else but he preferred to go to Everton so they’ve settled for Puel?

Mark Davies: You know, Puel may be a good choice for #LFC. Defensively orientated and hard to beat.

Andy White: Confused, not good enough for Southampton but good enough for Leicester. Not entirely sure how Puel is better than Shakespeare.

Thomashollern The appointment of Puel - indifferent. He’ll still have the same players until January but have easier games than Shakespeare.

COMMENT: Can Saints get the best from Sofiane Boufal?

Show/hide article…

Sofiane Boufal has proven he has the magic touch to unlock a game for Saints. The challenge now has been laid down to both the player himself and Mauricio Pellegrino to harness that ability.

The difficulties for Boufal are obvious via just a quick look through his year and a bit at St Mary’s.

A total lack of consistency has cost him a regular place in the team, and, in that vicious circle, a lack of games then makes consistency even harder to find.

There has been no doubting his talent. That was obvious from day one.

But too often the tricks and flicks have produced so little end product. Indeed, they have, at times, seemed to negatively impact the team.

It’s why the fans have got so on his back.

Boufal’s introductions from the bench have been often been met by jeers from Saints fans, convinced they will see another display where his talent is not properly channelled.

But that one moment against West Brom could be the catalyst to turn it all around.

A stunning run from deep, and then the coolest of finishes into the bottom corner, showed what he can do.

While a mercurial talent such as Boufal is likely to frustrate at times, he also has the ability to produce moments such as that goal that live long in the memory.

And when a team are so short of goals and confidence in attacking areas as Saints are, it is hard to overlook someone who can do something like that.

There is an argument for Boufal to be an impact player off of the bench, but he should want more than that himself.

Certainly his passionate response to scoring the goal against the Baggies suggested he is plenty fired up to try and prove a point.

Therefore, that passion has to go towards the kind of endeavours that mercurial talents are not as well known for – work rate, positional discipline, defending from the front.

If there was a sense that Boufal could produce a moment like this every couple of games then there could be an argument for getting him in the team and the rest of the side carrying him to an extent.

But in the more likely absence of that he has to put in a shift too if he is to play.

The task for Pellegrino is to see if he can crack the code with Boufal.

Saints paid £16m for him for a reason, and they won’t want him to go the same way as the other players of that sort they have bought recently.

Saints have spent big on creative talents, breaking transfer records for Gaston Ramirez, Dani Osvaldo and Boufal. So far, it hasn’t worked out very well for them.

However, that handful of seconds against West Brom showed that all is not lost with the 24-year-old Moroccan.

For Pellegrino though there is a dilemma.

He knows that he needs goals in the team, and Boufal has shown he can produce something out of nothing.

But he also knows that Boufal can sometimes drift through a match and make little in the way of a meaningful contribution.

Trying to find that perfect balance in the Saints side between defence and attack is something Pellegrino is clearly still searching for.

Whether Boufal will be the answer is unclear, but if the goals don’t start flowing and Pellegrino can’t find a way a way to give Boufal a go then that will also be a big question mark for the manager.

The difficulty is really how do you get the best from Boufal without causing issues for the side as a whole in terms of the need to keep things tight?

It’s not like playing Manolo Gabbiadini or Shane Long, where you have some sort of goal threat, albeit a very different one, but know you will get workrate and a certain amount of general all-round solidity in their play too.

Boufal plays on the margins, his trickery sometimes breath-taking, and at others head scratching as he gives the ball away.

Finding that perfect position for him is a tough task.

Assuming Pellegrino largely sticks with a 4-2-3-1 formation, then Boufal obviously has to slot into the three off of the main striker if he is to play.

The most natural position for him is the number ten role.

It allows him greater scope to drift wherever he wants to pick up the ball, to try and drop between the lines to cause the opposition problems, and to spring forward.

It is also, arguably, the position that requires the least discipline positionally in the side.

However, he hasn’t so far really offered the dynamism you get from playing a Gabbiadini or Long in that role where they can get beyond the striker and in behind.

The other options are to play him out wide, either left or right.

Then though you need a lot of workrate from him if you are to have your full backs providing much of the team’s width, otherwise they will be forced to defend rather than attack when the opportunity arises.

Boufal can come inside and finish – his brilliant goal against Sunderland last season a prime example – but he hasn’t really played all that well in the wide berths so far in terms of slotting into the team as a whole.

When you look at this weekend and a tough trip away at Brighton, it would in some ways seem a big call to include Boufal from the start.

But if he is to be more than just a super sub - which could also be the option that Pellegrino goes for - then he will need to get a run sometime, as there aren’t enough home games against poor sides to throw him in for to expect him to find the consistency everybody wants.

Napoli set £45million asking price for defender eyed by Chelsea, Everton and Southampton

Show/hide article…

Napoli have slapped a £45million price tag on Chelsea, Everton and Southampton target Kalidou Koulibaly.

The 26-year-old has established himself as one of those best defenders in Italy over the past few years and he is a wanted man.

Chelsea, Everton and Southampton are interested in the Senegal international, while Barcelona are tracking him too.

But, according to Sport, anyone looking to sign Koulibaly in January will have to part with £45m.

Napoli view the centre-back as a key part of their plans and will not let him go for anything less than that.

Koulibaly is said to be settled at the Italian club too and has a contract there until 2021.

Ex-Saints boss Claude Puel a ‘perfect fit’ for Leicester

Show/hide article…

Leicester vice-chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha believes Claude Puel is the “perfect fit” for the club - despite being sacked as Saints manager just months earlier.

The 56-year-old is back in the Premier League after just 133 days, having succeeded Craig Shakespeare on a deal until June 2020.

Puel last season led Saints to the EFL Cup final and eighth in the Premier League, but frustrations behind the scenes and in the stands led to his departure after just one season.

Saints great Matthew Le Tissier has warned Leicester about Puel’s “pretty boring” football, but Srivaddhanaprabha has been impressed by the Frenchman.

“When we began the process of identifying a new manager, the board quickly established the profile of candidate we needed to take the club forward and Claude Puel was a perfect fit,” the City vice-chairman said.

"Upon meeting Claude, his attention to detail, knowledge of our squad, understanding of our potential and his vision to help us realise it were extremely impressive.

“He quickly emerged as the outstanding candidate and I am delighted we will have the opportunity to reinforce our long-term vision, aided significantly by his expertise.”

Ex-Leicester striker Gary Lineker summed up many fans’ feelings by posting “Claude Puel? Really?” - a tweet poking fun at himself as much as the appointment, having tweeted the same when Claudio Ranieri was appointed at the start of their title-winning season.

Such heights look all but impossible to scale for Puel, who will take charge for the first time when Everton arrive in the Premier League on Sunday.

“It’s a great privilege to become the new manager of Leicester City - a club whose values and ambitions are closely aligned to my own,” said the 56-year-old, who will retain Michael Appleton as assistant.

“The opportunity to help the club build on its remarkable recent achievements is a truly exciting one and I’m looking forward to working with the owners, players, staff and supporters to deliver further lasting success.”

Puel moved into management with Monaco - the only club he represented as a player - in 1999 and won the Ligue 1 crown the following year.

Spells with Lille, Lyon and Nice followed before the 56-year-old replaced Ronald Koeman as Saints boss in 2016.

Leicester are 14th in the Premier League standings and through to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after beating Leeds 3-1 on Tuesday.
