Will it be a make or break month for your Premier League club this December?

December brings with it a feast of football on Sky Sports, but will it be a make or break month for your Premier League club?

With seven rounds of fixtures and 19 games live on Sky Sports Premier League, a crucial period awaits for those battling at both ends of the table.

At the top, Manchester City will look to extend their eight-point lead, while at the bottom, just six points separate 20th-placed Crystal Palace from 12th-placed Newcastle.

The Premier League rarely serves up easy fixtures, and a lot can happen in four weeks of football. Here, Michael Hincks looks at December’s gone by and key matches to come as clubs look to build momentum going into 2018.

December can often be the month when eventual Premier League champions stamp their authority on the title race.

Last season’s winners Chelsea headed into December 2016 just one point clear of Liverpool and Manchester City, and three above Arsenal.

But the Blues went on to sweep every club aside that month, winning all six matches to end the year six points ahead of Liverpool, nine clear of Arsenal and 10 above both City and Tottenham.

In a matter of weeks, Antonio Conte’s side tightened their stranglehold on the league. This time around, it will be all eyes on City, to see if they can do likewise.

Having opened up an eight-point gap over Manchester United, many believe the sky blue ribbon can be wrapped around the trophy already, but Pep Guardiola will no doubt highlight last season’s December struggles as a cautionary tale for his players.

For while Chelsea took a maximum 18 points, City claimed just nine, suffering three of their six defeats in one month to leave themselves 10 points behind Chelsea and all-but out of contention.

On this occasion, a similar slip-up would merely allow the stragglers to catch up, but having lost to Chelsea 12 months ago, and drawn with eventual champions Leicester the year before that, City know too well that this busy period can have a huge say on where the title ends up.

City fans will have pencilled December 10 into their diary ever since Sky Sports announced last month that a bumper Nissan Super Sunday - which also features the Merseryside derby - would conclude with City taking on Manchester United.

With Guardiola’s men travelling to Old Trafford, it will serve up their greatest test of the season to date, and could allow for a momentum shift should they fall to a first loss of the season.

Tottenham’s defeat to Arsenal two weeks ago is a reminder of how such meetings can have a knock-on effect, and United will be aware that a morale-boosting victory over their city rivals could mean more than just bragging rights in Manchester.

December 10 also sees Liverpool play host to Everton. For contrasting reasons, both clubs will be desperate to put points on the board.

Liverpool are once more in a fight for a Champions League spot, and with three Soccer Saturday pundits believing the Reds will fall short, Jurgen Klopp will target a winning run this December to silence the doubters and strengthen their claim for a top-four finish.

Everton meanwhile will hope a derby-day victory at Anfield can boost their hoped-for revival under Sam Allardyce, who has been tasked with turning around their poor start to the season.

That role also falls to Alan Pardew at West Brom, who happens to begin his tenure at Crystal Palace this Saturday, having been sacked by the Eagles three days before Christmas last year.

Both managers are undoubtedly jumping in at the deep end. The prospect of a busy festive period means they will have to learn the ropes at their new clubs quickly, or face the prospect of slinking further down the table. However, they will not be the only managers under pressure.

'Tis the season for managerial sackings, or so the stats would suggest.

During all Premier League seasons, November has proved to be the most prolific month for managerial causalities - 33 since 1992 - but in the past 10 campaigns, December has seen the most changes, 16 in all.

It’s a notoriously twitchy time for chairmen, who cannot bear the thought of being bottom at Christmas, but with five managers departing already, will we see any more leave their post before the year’s end?

Paul Clement is facing increased scrutiny at the Swansea City helm. Five points from their last 11 games has left the club 19th in the table, and while leaders City are to come in December, the Swans face a crucial couple of games against Stoke and West Brom - expect to see ‘six-pointer’ come into use frequently this month.

Swansea’s meeting with Stoke also comes with Mark Hughes enduring a torrid time with the Potters. They host Swansea on the back of a four-game winless run, and could be dragged further into trouble if they lose that key contest.

The meeting will be one of many crucial relegation battles this December, and with 21 points on offer, there are plenty of opportunities to bring in the New Year in a much-safer position.

It’s set to be a tense - but thrilling - month at both ends of the Premier League table.

Stat Pack: Cherries vs Saints

Show/hide article…

It’s a short trip to Vitality Stadium for Southampton this Sunday, and here are some of the key numbers ahead of the Premier League match…

• Saints have won five of the past seven meetings with Bournemouth, dating back to 2010, drawing one and losing just one of those matches.

• You might not want to put your money on a draw! There hasn’t been a stalemate between the teams in the last eight league meetings at Bournemouth.

• 3-1 to Saints again? Three of Southampton’s last five trips to Bournemouth have ended in a 3-1 victory, including last season’s match, when Ryan Bertrand and Jay Rodriguez (2) got the goals.

• Further encouragement… Bournemouth have lost four of their seven home league games so far this season. That’s just two fewer than they lost in the whole of the 2016/17 season.

• Southampton’s last away league win on a Sunday? Well, that was last season’s 3-1 success at Vitality Stadium.

• The Cherries have got better on Sundays, though! After losing their first eight Sunday Premier League games, they’ve picked up four points from the last three.

• With five goals in their last two games, Southampton have now scored one more than they had at this stage last season in the Premier League.

• Charlie Austin’s double and Steven Davis’s strike against Everton means they both join Manolo Gabbiadini as Saints’ top Premier League scorers, with three goals each. Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson is top for Cherries, also on three.

• In 154 minutes on the pitch during Southampton’s last two games, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg has touched the ball an impressive 165 times and gained possession an incredible 28 times.

Premier League table: How it should really look

Show/hide article…

It’s been a fascinating Premier League season so far, and the table is taking shape as we enter December and a busy festive period.

In recent weeks, a run of poor results has seen Tottenham slip down the table, while Burnley are up to sixth and Manchester City remain top.

At the other end of the league, Palace continue to prop up the rest.

But places only tell part of the story – it is the points difference that demonstrates how closely fought, or otherwise, the battle for Premier League placings are.

With that in mind, here is a league ladder based on points totals so far, and it’s looking very good for Manchester City…

Man United fans all say the same thing about Pep Guardiola’s post-match outburst

Show/hide article…

Pep Guardiola had an eventful evening on Wednesday.

The Manchester City boss must have thought that his side were going to fail to record a victory for the first time in 19 matches as the clock ticked over the 96th minute against Southampton with the scoreline at1-1,

But then Raheem Sterling intervened with a brilliant late winner .

The Englishman’s second late winner in a week secured a dramatic victory for City and furthered pretty much everyone’s belief that they will run away with the Premier League title this season, only for Guardiola’s behaviour to then steal the show.

The City boss was seen entering the field of play after the match had finished and seemingly engaging in an angry confrontation with Saints winger Nathan Redmond, although he later explained that away as simply telling Redmond “how good he is.”

And the fact that the incident happened after the match and not during it hasn’t stopped some Manchester United fans from making a very salient point on social media.

Because if this had been Jose Mourinho - who has been banned by the FA on numerous occasions for his behaviour, including once for kicking a water bottle - then what would his punishment be?

Well, what do you think?

Pep Guardiola must be punished for Nathan Redmond rant - anything else sends out a terrible message

Show/hide article…

Here’s a question: if I was managing a group of eight year olds and my team scored a dramatic late winner, would it be acceptable for me as the manager to go haranguing a player from the other side in the same sort of manic, aggressive way as Pep Guardiola did Southampton’s Nathan Redmond on Wednesday night?

No, of course not, even if I was trying to compliment the player, if not his team, as the Manchester City manager claimed he was trying to do with Redmond.

So why should such behaviour be acceptable at the top end of the game watched by millions? If the Football Association fail to take any action against Guardiola over the incident at the Etihad Stadium, it will not only tell other Premier League managers that it is acceptable to behave in such a manner, it will also give managers at all levels of the sport the belief that they, too, are okay to act in a similar way.

This is not about wanting to see Guardiola banned from the touchline. He is a marvellous coach and, like his team, an entertaining watch. Rather, it is about drawing a clear line about what is and isn’t acceptable. The behaviour of some coaches at grassroots level is bad enough without them being given cause to think they are fine to carry on as they please.

Are Manchester City kings of the last-minute goal? Top 10 scorers in final five minutes revealed

Show/hide article…

Raheem Sterling has turned himself into Manchester City’s saviour this season.

Sterling, the England international, had failed to show his true worth at the Etihad prior to this season, but the 22-year-old has exploded into life throughout 2017-18.

And in recent weeks, when Pep Guardiola’s side have been struggling to perform at their best, Sterling has popped up with some incredibly vital goals.

He scored the winning goal against Feyenoord in the Champions League, then achieved the same feat in consecutive Premier League matches against Huddersfield and Southampton.

What is incredible about these winning goals is that they have all come in the final minutes of the matches in which they were scored in.

Sterling’s winner over Feyenoord was netted after 88 minutes, the strike against Huddersfield came five minutes from time, while his wonder goal versus Southampton came SIX minutes into time added on!

Man City have proven they have that desire and ability to fight until the final whistle that all champions possess, but have they scored the most last-minute goals in 2017-18?

You can see the 10 teams who have scored the most goals in the final five minutes of Premier League matches this season by clicking the right arrow, above…

*All data correct as of 30/11/2017. Only goals scored from 85 minutes onwards in Premier League fixtures counted towards total.

Nathan Redmond should be honoured for not clocking Pep Guardiola

Show/hide article…

Let’s face it, Pep Guardiola is lucky he did not cop a right-hander from Nathan Redmond.

Whatever he said, however complimentary, Guardiola was literally spitting mad. Just look at the pictures.

What right did Guardiola have to be in an opposition player’s face like that?

What right did he have to yell demonically at a footballer who has absolutely nothing to do with him?

What right did he have to lay a hand on someone making his calm way from the field of play?

He had no right at all.

Don’t come out with the passion tosh, don’t buy the ludicrous line that Pep cares so much, he even wants to bless guys from rival teams with his advice.

Redmond, according to some, should be honoured by Guardiola’s foam-flecked feting of his talent.

Redmond should be honoured for not clocking him.

Playing football from another planet cuts you an awful lot of slack, it seems.

That the incident might have been viewed differently had it been Jose Mourinho instead of Guardiola goes without saying.

When Pep behaves like this, it is eccentric. If it was Jose, it would have been malicious.

Let’s just imagine, in the Manchester derby, Mourinho gets Raheem Sterling by the collar immediately after the match and gives him the bulging-eyed, both-barrelled verbal treatment.

You suspect Guardiola would have something to say about it.

Mauricio Pellegrino should have told Guardiola, in no uncertain terms, to keep the heck away from his players.

Redmond, apart from looking a little freaked-out, did not seem to take offence so that’s OK then.

No, it is not.

If the Football Association takes no action, it is giving carte blanche for pumped-up managers to go ranting and raving at opposition players after the final whistle.

Yes, emotions were running high after a dramatic finale to the game but that is no excuse for a coach to tell someone else’s responsibility where he is going right and where he is going wrong.

Managers on the pitch after a bog-standard game has gone too far, anyway.

Remember the times when it was a rarity? A firm handshake, a polite wave to the crowd and take your leave.

After all, the players are the stars of the show.

Maybe we are all to blame for creating the cult of the manager.

Maybe we are all to blame for revelling in the technical area Punch and Judy show.

These managers can’t keep off the stage nowadays. Jurgen Klopp’s post-match heat map, for example, is frightening.

At least Arsene Wenger, grumpy or not, can be relied upon to disappear pretty quickly. Old school, you see.

That is why he will probably go unpunished by the Football Association for this preposterous piece of arrogance.

That, in the immediate agony of a last-minute defeat, he thought Redmond might like the benefit of his crazily-animated advice is nothing less than exactly that.

He is a brilliant coach, producing brilliant stuff, inspiring match winners such as Sterling to be more brilliant by the day.

But in this instance, he overstepped the mark, and if Guardiola is let off and Mourinho - once banned for kicking a water bottle - cares to point out the FA’s inconsistencies, he will be quite within his rights.

Playing football from another planet cuts you an awful lot of slack, it seems, but it should not make it one rule for Pep and one rule for the rest.

Pep Guardiola slammed for Nathan Redmond rant: ‘If Mourinho did it, there’d be uproar’

Show/hide article…

The Man City coach was involved in an animated discussion with the Southampton winger after his side beat the Saints 2-1 with a last-gasp Raheem Sterling goal.

The video went viral on social media, and it showed Guardiola shoving the Englishman and shouting whilst Redmond remained calm as he trudged off the pitch.

And former Arsenal legend Ray Parlour has berated the Catalan coach for being too exuberant.

He told talkSPORT: “That was over the top, for me.

“A manager going to another player, who is not your own player and putting your arms on him and pulling him around – we all love Guardiola’s passion and I’m not saying I don’t like it, but to do that at the end of the game.
