THE MATCH

Huddersfield Town vs Southampton

Saturday 26th August, 3pm BST

John Smith’s Stadium

Premier League

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

For both sides, it’s a chance to keep their good starts to the season going.

Huddersfield have arrived in the Premier League in spectacular fashion, winning each of their opening two matches.

Saints are close behind them, having claimed four points from a possible six so far.

A win for either side would cement an extremely strong start to the campaign.

TEAM NEWS

Huddersfield: Manager David Wagner will not involve new signings Abdelhamid Sabiri or Florent Hadergjonaj, while midfielder Jonathan Hogg, forward Nakhi Wells and defenders Martin Cranie and Jon Gorenc Stankovic are absent through injury.

Southampton: Saints are assessing whether Dutch international centre-back Wesley Hoedt will be part of the squad, having only arrived from Lazio during the week. Manager Mauricio Pellegrino has no major injury concerns ahead of this one.

ONE TO WATCH

Benin striker Steve Mounie was one of a number of players signed by Huddersfield Town over the summer, and he is fast becoming a fan favourite. He struck twice on the opening day of the season, in the 3-0 win at Crystal Palace, and the 22-year-old looks like a real threat for the Terriers.

Huddersfield have also kept a clean sheet in both of their Premier League games so far. The only previous occasion a newly-promoted side managed to do this in each of their opening three games in a Premier League season were Charlton Athletic in 1998-99.

These two sides last met in the top-flight back in December 1971; a season that Huddersfield finished bottom of Division One.

Huddersfield v Southampton preview: Terriers target another win

Show/hide article…

Huddersfield will be looking to continue their perfect Premier League record when they host Southampton on Saturday.

The newly-promoted Terriers have enjoyed a dream start to their first-ever Premier League season, following up a 3-0 win at Crystal Palace with a 1-0 victory over Newcastle.

The only other newly-promoted team to win their first three games in a Premier League season were Bolton in 2001/02.

Despite taking six points from six, manager David Wagner is not getting too carried away: "We know it is a good start, but it is only a start.

"We are humble enough to know this, but we are also ambitious enough to try and make sure it is enough to get us towards where we want to be. It gives us a chance to be successful.

“I wouldn’t say it means nothing, because I’d much prefer to have six points than zero points after two games, but we also realise we have not actually achieved anything yet. We remain the biggest underdogs.”

Southampton have also made a positive start to their Premier League campaign, with a draw against Swansea and 3-2 victory over West Ham.

However, this is their first away trip of the season in the league and comes on the back of a 2-0 defeat to Wolves in the second round of the Carabao Cup, which manager Mauricio Pellegrino called a “step backward”.

Huddersfield manager David Wagner will not consider selecting new signings Abdelhamid Sabiri and Florent Hadergjonaj.

Wagner wants midfielder Sabiri and right-back Hadergjonaj to do some work in training before coming into contention after the international break.

The Terriers have no fresh injury concerns following their midweek Carabao Cup win over Rotherham but are still without midfielder Jonathan Hogg, forward Nahki Wells (both ankle) and defenders Martin Cranie (hip) and Jon Gorenc Stankovic (knee).

Saints boss Pellegrino has a fully-fit squad to chose from and could hand a debut to Wesley Hoedt, who has joined from Lazio.

The last time that these two teams met was in December 2010 in the third tier of English football - Southampton won 4-1 that day.

Huddersfield haven’t won their opening three league games of a season since the 1979-80 campaign, when they won the fourth tier; they last won their first three matches of a top-flight season in 1924-25, on their way to the second of three consecutive league titles.

The Terriers have kept a clean sheet in both of their Premier League games so far. The only previous occasion a newly-promoted side managed to do this in each of their opening three games in a Premier League season was Charlton Athletic in the 1998-99 campaign.

Southampton have failed to score in seven of their last 10 Premier League games, scoring just seven goals from 138 shots in these matches (5.1 per cent).

Saints have won more Premier League away games in 2017 (four of 10) than they have at home (three of 11).

Huddersfield’s start to the season is the stuff of dreams, they are doing great. On the other hand, I’m struggling to come to terms with Saints’ League Cup exit. They are not going to relegated or finish in the top four, so to go out of the cup so cheaply does my head in.

Having said that, Southampton are a wily Premier League outfit and they may have just too much for Huddersfield. If the Terriers are able to win, though, they will be virtually a quarter of their way to safety too, an incredible position just three games into the season.

Southampton are Sky Bet’s 21/20 favourites for the victory with Huddersfield 11/4 to maintain their winning start, while the draw is priced at 23/10. The Terriers have gone from odds-on favourites to 13/8 for the drop thanks to their fine start, while the Saints are all but dismissed from the relegation betting at 40/1. Charlie Austin and Manolo Gabbiadini head the first goalscorer betting at 9/2 with Steve Mounie considered the hosts’ main threat at 7/1 to net first.

Huddersfield v Southampton is included this week’s Super 6 line-up, with a £1million jackpot guaranteed until won. Enter your predictions for free here.

Inside Track: Huddersfield Town

Show/hide article…

Can you sum up the start of the season and the mood at Huddersfield?

It’s been an incredible start to the season, with Town earning two Premier League wins and advancing to the third round of the Carabao Cup. The Terriers have proven to the other Premier League sides that they are here to compete, not just to take part. The atmosphere created by the club’s success stretches beyond football. The town has been painted blue and white and the excitement is palpable across West Yorkshire. If the team can keep churning out results, the mood will continue to intensify and that will make the John Smith’s Stadium a hard place to visit.

How has the team been playing – what is their style like?

The team has performed well in their first two Premier League matches, scoring four goals and conceding none. However, head coach David Wagner knows Southampton will be their hardest test so far. The Terriers have beaten a Crystal Palace side in transition under Frank de Boer and a Newcastle team in crisis, so the match against Saints will likely give us a better reading of how the team is playing. Town like to press high up the pitch and force mistakes from the opposition, similar to Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool. Wagner stresses the importance of speed in the transition and this season the addition of Steve Mounie also gives Town an aerial threat.

Has there been any notable changes from last season?

Town have splashed the Premier League cash in the transfer window, bringing in 11 players and smashing their transfer record three times. The Terriers snapped up some English league players such as Tom Ince, Aaron Mooy, Kasey Palmer, Scott Malone and Danny Williams, but also brought in a range of foreign players including the impressive trio of Jonas Lossl, Steve Mounie and Mathias ‘Zanka’ Jorgensen. The identity of the team has stayed the same however, with the new players slotting into the existing system well. Off the pitch, the John Smith’s Stadium has been updated to meet Premier League standards, while a new segregation system has been put in place to maximise seating for home and away fans.

Who have been the standout performers so far?

Steve Mounie’s performance against Crystal Palace was exceptional, with the Benin international netting a brace on his English football debut. Aaron Mooy has been metronomic in the midfield, scoring the winner at Newcastle, while Philip Billing has also impressed in the heart of the pitch. At the back, Christopher Schindler has continued his good form from last season, while new boy Jonas Lossl has pulled off some remarkable saves to make it two clean sheets from two for Town.

What is the atmosphere like at the John Smith’s Stadium?

It’s been incredible over the last two seasons. David Wagner has created a bond between the club and the fans like no other I’ve seen before. The south stand will be packed out with the most vocal support - right next to the away fans - with the Town faithful putting on displays and tifos ahead of the matches. The pride the fans have in this team is huge and that is reflected in the noise they have created since the start of last season. And they have upped their game to Premier League level for the club’s first top-flight season in 45 years.

Who do you think will be the key men for Huddersfield this weekend?

Chris Lowe and Tommy Smith will be key. The full-backs performed admirably last season and have started the Premier League campaign in the same manner. But with Southampton’s quality in the wide areas, the weekend match could prove a different prospect for the pair. However, both like to get forward and , if they can shut out the Saints wingers, they could cause a few problems themselves. Steve Mounie will also be key to Town. The 22-year-old has pace and power and is a threat in the air and will be key to Town going forward. Last season the Terriers struggled to put the ball in the net at times, but fans will hope the introduction of Mounie will put that right in the top tier.

Premier League team news: Squads revealed for every match this weekend

Show/hide article…

Deadline Day is looming and international break is almost upon us. But what lies in store in the Premier League after a thrilling opening fortnight to the new season?

The main attraction is at Anfield on Sunday when Liverpool , fresh from their Champions League exertions, entertain Arsenal .

The Gunners suffered a shock 1-0 defeat by Stoke last weekend and will be desperate to bounce back in a bid to impress their early title credentials.

One team who have done that successfully so far is Manchester United .

Jose Mourinho’s men have been in devastating form, registering back-to-back 4-0 wins over West Ham and Swansea . Will they make it three in a row against 2015-16 champions Leicester ?

Chelsea recovered from their opening day setback to Burnley with a fine 2-1 win against Spurs last week - but will they record their first home win of the season when they host high-flying Everton on Sunday?

Indeed, there is is plenty more to look forward to this weekend.

Here, we run you through all the team news ahead of a huge weekend of top-flight football.

Jermain Defoe could retain his place up front when Bournemouth host Manchester City.

Defoe played 90 minutes at Birmingham in the Carabao Cup in midweek and Cherries boss Eddie Howe was impressed with his performance.

Howe has no fresh injury concerns but captain Simon Francis (hamstring) and midfielder Junior Stanislas (groin) remain sidelined, along with long-term absentee Callum Wilson (knee).

Manchester City will be without Kyle Walker through suspension for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Bournemouth.

The right-back was controversially sent off in Monday’s draw against Everton and is set to be replaced in the line-up by fellow new signing Danilo.

Left-back Benjamin Mendy (thigh) will travel with the squad but the game may come too soon, while midfielder Ilkay Gundogan (knee) will feature for the elite development squad.

Sam Clucas could go straight into the Swansea side at Crystal Palace following his £15million move from Hull.

Skipper Leon Britton is also available after a back injury forced him out of the last two games against Manchester United and MK Dons.

But Kyle Bartley (knee ligaments) has joined a casualty list which includes Fernando Llorente (arm), Nathan Dyer (Achilles) and Ki Sung-yueng (knee).

Ruben Loftus-Cheek will miss Crystal Palace’s Premier League clash with Swansea at Selhurst Park.

The on-loan Chelsea midfielder has suffered a groin injury and joins winger Wilfried Zaha (knee) on the sidelines.

Midfielder James McArthur is pushing for his first league start of the season after scoring twice in the Carabao Cup victory over Ipswich in midweek.

Huddersfield manager David Wagner will not consider selecting new signings Abdelhamid Sabiri and Florent Hadergjonaj for Saturday’s Premier League clash against Southampton.

Wagner wants midfielder Sabiri and right-back Hadergjonaj to do some work in training before coming into contention for the trip to West Ham after the international break.

The Terriers have no fresh injury concerns following their Carabao Cup win over Rotherham but are still without midfielder Jonathan Hogg, forward Nahki Wells (both ankle) and defenders Martin Cranie (hip) and Jon Gorenc Stankovic (knee).

Holland defender Wesley Hoedt could make his Southampton debut in Saturday’s Premier League game at Huddersfield.

The 23-year-old arrived at St Mary’s on Tuesday for a reported £15million from Serie A club Lazio.

Saints, however, will once again be without wantaway centre-back Virgil van Dijk, according to manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

Manuel Lanzini will be added to the West Ham squad for the trip to Newcastle after recovering from a knee injury.

Andy Carroll is also back in training after his latest lay-off due to a thigh problem and will be assessed.

Winston Reid (calf) is the only definite injury absentee while Marko Arnautovic is still suspended.

Newcastle winger Rolando Aarons is a doubt for Saturday’s Premier League clash with West Ham.

The winger, who capped an impressive individual display with a goal in Wednesday night’s 3-2 Carabao Cup defeat by Nottingham Forest, picked up a knock and will have a late fitness test.

Keeper Karl Darlow is out with a thigh problem, while Jonjo Shelvey completes his three-match ban and defenders DeAndre Yedlin and Paul Dummett (both hamstring) and Florian Lejeune (ankle ligaments) are still out.

Watford could hand a debut to new loan signing Andre Carrillo for Saturday’s visit of Premier League new boys Brighton.

The Benfica winger joined the Hornets on Thursday and could be involved for Marco Silva’s side at Vicarage Road.

Younes Kaboul, Daryl Janmaat and Roberto Pereyra all suffered muscular injuries against Liverpool and are sidelined, as is Mauro Zarate (knee), while Jose Holebas is banned.

Brighton boss Chris Hughton may give a debut to record-signing Jose Izquierdo during Saturday’s Premier League match at Watford.

The Colombia winger was granted international clearance for his move from Club Brugge on Thursday. Albion will not, however, be able to call on Ghana striker Raphael Dwamena at Vicarage Road as a work permit application is holding up his transfer from FC Zurich.

Seagulls striker Glenn Murray (ankle) and midfielder Steve Sidwell (back) should be fit to feature for Albion, but Izzy Brown (hamstring), Beram Kayal (broken leg) and Sam Baldock (knee) remain out.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho may opt to retain the same starting XI again for Saturday’s Premier League home clash with Leicester.

If Mourinho is to make any adjustment to his team after seeing the Red Devils win their opening two league matches of the season 4-0, it may be bringing in Anthony Martial, who has come off the bench to scored in both games.

Luke Shaw and Ashley Young stepped up their recoveries from injury by playing for the Under-23s this week but are not expected to be involved in the contest this weekend, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who re-signed for United on a one-year deal on Thursday, and Marcos Rojo remain sidelined by their knee problems.

Captain Wes Morgan and striker Jamie Vardy could both be back in Leicester’s starting line-up against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Both players were left nursing injuries following the home win over Brighton but Morgan’s back complaint has eased and Vardy is fit again after a foot problem.

Danny Drinkwater (thigh) and Papy Mendy (ankle) have resumed full training while Kelechi Iheanacho has also been able to train, although Leicester boss Craig Shakespeare will err on the side of caution with the striker after his toe injury.

Jonny Evans remains a doubt for West Brom as they prepare for Sunday’s visit of Stoke.

Evans, a transfer target for Manchester City, has yet to feature this season because of a hamstring injury and he will continue to be assessed. Fellow centre-half Gareth McAuley (thigh) remains out and striker Hal Robson-Kanu is still suspended.

James Morrison will also be checked on after making his return from injury at Accrington in midweek but the midfielder is expected to be in contention. New signing Oliver Burke could be among the substitutes.

Xherdan Shaqiri remains an injury concern for Stoke ahead of Sunday’s trip to The Hawthorns to face West Brom.

A hamstring problem forced the Switzerland international off midway through the first half of the home win against Arsenal and manager Mark Hughes has said he will give Shaqiri as long as possible to prove his fitness.

Hughes made eight changes for the Carabao Cup tie against Rochdale and the likes of Jack Butland, Ryan Shawcross, Darren Fletcher, Rodriguez Jese and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting are expected to come back into the team.

Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas returns from suspension for the visit of Everton.

But defender Gary Cahill is still banned following his red card against Burnley on the opening day of the season.

Forward Eden Hazard is due to play for the club’s under-23s on Friday as he builds up his fitness following a broken ankle.

Everton have doubts over both Idrissa Gueye and Sandro Ramirez and will be without Davy Klaassen for their trip to Chelsea.

Gueye missed Thursday’s win over Hajduk Split as a precaution with a hamstring problem, while neither striker Sandro (heel) nor midfielder Klaassen (foot) played either, the latter having already been ruled out of a return at Stamford Bridge.

Boss Ronald Koeman’s midfield options are limited as Morgan Schneiderlin is suspended, with the Frenchman joining James McCarthy, Ramiro Funes Mori, Yannick Bolasie (all knee), Seamus Coleman (broken leg) and Ross Barkley (hamstring) on the sidelines.

Tottenham remain hopeful that club-record signing Davinson Sanchez will receive a work permit in time to feature in Sunday’s Premier League clash with Burnley.

The Colombia international defender joined Spurs from Ajax during but may be forced to sit out the meeting at Wembley if his permit is not issued in time.

Georges-Kevin Nkoudou (foot), Danny Rose (knee) and Erik Lamela (hips) have progressed in their respective recoveries but are all still missing.

Summer signing Jonathan Walters is out of Burnley’s Premier League trip to Tottenham through injury.

The Republic of Ireland international suffered an ankle problem during the first half of Wednesday night’s 2-0 Carabao Cup second-round victory at Blackburn and will not feature at Wembley, while midfielder Jeff Hendrick is a doubt with a thigh strain.

However, record signing Chris Wood, who joined the club in a £15million switch from Leeds earlier this week, could be handed his first start after replacing Walters at Ewood Park, where manager Sean Dyche made eight changes.

Alexis Sanchez is in line to make his first Arsenal appearance of the season when they face Liverpool in the Premier League at Anfield on Saturday.

The Chile international has been absent with an abdominal strain but is set to be involved, as is defender Laurent Koscielny who returns from a three-match ban.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has a largely-fit squad to choose from, although long-term absentee Santi Cazorla (ankle) still sidelined.

Liverpool are again without Philippe Coutinho for Arsenal’s visit to Anfield on Sunday.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp confirmed the Barcelona target is still “on our injury list” with a back problem, even though he looks set to join up with Brazil next week.

Klopp is hopeful that both Emre Can and Trent Alexander-Arnold can overcome minor issues they sustained in midweek against Hoffenheim, while Georginio Wijnaldum is set to return to England after attending the birth of his child in Holland, but Nathaniel Clyne (hamstring) and Adam Lallana (thigh) remain absent.
