Virgil van Dijk: Southampton defender hints at January exit

Show/hide article…

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk has hinted he would still like to leave the Premier League club when the transfer window reopens in January.

The Netherlands centre-back, 26, handed in a transfer request in August and said he wanted to move to Liverpool.

Southampton refused to sell the former Celtic player, who returned to their starting XI for the first time this season on Saturday.

“Halfway through the season, maybe we can see what’s possible,” he said.

Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino ordered Van Dijk, who signed a new six-year contract in May 2016, to train alone in July amid speculation over his future.

He made his first appearance of the season when he came on as a substitute against Crystal Palace last month, and then started Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Stoke.

Liverpool ended their interest in the player in June after Southampton said they were going to report them to the Premier League for making an alleged illegal approach.

However, Van Dijk - who was also linked with Chelsea and Manchester City - says he has “no regrets” about asking to leave Saints, who signed him for £13m in September 2013.

“I wanted to go one step up, but eventually Southampton did not want to let me go,” said the Dutchman.

“You’re a professional, so now I’ll give everything to the club.”

Premier League clubs agree further talks on overseas money

Show/hide article…

Premier League clubs have agreed to further talks over new proposals to change the way they receive money from overseas broadcasting deals.

The clubs met on Wednesday to discuss the issue and unanimously agreed to adjourn the meeting to allow further discussion.

The clubs have not rejected any proposals regarding the distribution of international broadcast revenue, but have simply agreed to further talks on the issue.

Sky Sports News reported on Tuesday that the league were set to propose that 35 per cent of international television revenue should be allocated according to where a club finishes in the table, with the remaining 65 per cent distributed equally to all clubs.

One hundred per cent of overseas money is currently distributed equally under the current system and each club received around £39m from the overseas deal last season.

Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool are understood to favour a change to the current equal distribution of cash.

Some clubs with the highest revenue believe they should receive a greater slice of international money, in line with their global marketability and investment.

Nine clubs presently favour the new distribution plan, with fourteen clubs needed to agree before any changes are approved.

World Cup 2018: Striker Shane Long boosts Republic by returning to training

Show/hide article…

Shane Long boosted his chances of playing in the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualifier against Moldova as he returned to training on Wednesday.

The Southampton striker missed Monday and Tuesday’s sessions because of a leg injury but now looks set to be available for Friday’s must-win game.

Injury-doubts James McCarthy (knee) and Harry Arter (calf) also trained but appear less likely to start in Dublin.

Jonathan Walters is out of Friday’s contest and Monday’s game in Wales.

Key forward Walters is absent because of a knee injury while Robbie Brady and James McClean are suspended for the Moldova game.

Martin O’Neill’s side need to win at home and then beat Wales to have a chance of making the play-offs.

Long, 30, had started the past three games for Southampton.

However, McCarthy has yet to play for Everton this season because of a knee injury, and the 26-year-old has previously angered Toffees boss Ronald Koeman by aggravating groin and hamstring problems while with the Republic.

Roy Keane, O’Neill’s assistant, said: "James seems to be getting a lot of injuries at Everton, so I don’t think we have anything to worry about in terms of how much we push James.

“The medical staff are overseeing all of it and are in contact with Everton and all their scientists. I think they have more scientists involved now than there needs to be.”

Walters’ injury and Kevin Doyle’s retirement have seen O’Neill turn to untried trio Scott Hogan, Sean Maguire and Aiden O’Brien, in the process handing Salford-born Manchester United fan Hogan the chance to work with his idol Keane.

Asked about the frontman’s admission that he was “star-struck” when he met the former United skipper on the flight to Dublin, Keane replied: "Listen, that will soon change.

"After a week working with me, that will soon change. He will wish I had never met him. That’s what most people say after a week.

“No, it’s nice to have him in and involved. The fact that he is a United fan is irrelevant. He’s now an Irish player and we are glad to have him on board.”

The Virgil van Dijk question which Liverpool fans must ask themselves

Show/hide article…

“Halfway through the season, maybe we can see what’s possible,” Virgil van Dijk said from the safety of his home country, the Netherlands, on Tuesday.

The Southampton defender waited precisely one international break before re-opening the wounds of the summer’s longest-running transfer saga, with Liverpool still understood to be his destination of choice.

There are clear obstacles to the move - namely Southampton’s displeasure with Liverpool’s initial approaches for Van Dijk back in June and their reluctance to lose a sixth player to Anfield in the last three years. If it does come off though, many on Merseyside will be happy, confident that their side’s long-standing defensive problems have been put to bed.

Van Dijk or indeed any highly-rated centre-half is now thought of as the panacea for Liverpool, the difference between a title challenge and their current inconsistencies. Without even having signed, Jürgen Klopp’s next centre-half is being asked to meet near-impossible expectations and, whoever it is, they will be under greater scrutiny than any of the manager’s previous signings.

This invites an obvious question: What if he makes a mistake?

Individual errors are, according to Klopp, the very thing holding Liverpool’s defence back. This interpretation can be questioned but the statistics suggest that much of the time, his system works. Liverpool are effective at limiting the number of chances they give to their opponents and have conceded the second-lowest amount of shots on goal of any team in the Premier League this season. The problem is, when those chances come, they are good ones. Like Joselu’s equaliser for Newcastle United in Sunday’s 1-1 draw, for example.

Liverpool’s support is tired of this. They will show patience to new players who have the ability to succeed and put the hard yards in, but they have also understandably lost trust in a defence which has let them down time and again. The next hulking great individual error or collective cock-up never feels more than a moment away and each one only increases the scrutiny on those at the back.

Several members of Klopp’s defence simply are not trusted by large sections of his support and, by contrast, Klopp has been criticised for showing too much faith in these players.

When Loris Karius was handed a surprise start against Arsenal in August, Anfield was nervous. The goalkeeper’s assertive punching and claiming of crosses was applauded and encouraged, but each time he dwelt on the ball for a second or two longer than usual, there were panicked cries. Late in that game, when Karius elected to hoof the ball clear first-time, those cries were replaced by ironic cheers.

Alberto Moreno has quietly got on with his job since returning as Klopp’s first-choice left-back and improbably saving his Anfield career. Yet there is still a sharp intake of breath in the stands each time the erratic Spaniard tries one of his trademark ‘corkscrew’ tackles from behind in an attempt to win the ball from a winger who’s already beaten him.

Dejan Lovren, one of the five to arrive from Southampton since the summer of 2014, is the most criticised player of all. The Croatian has a habit of undermining his better spells in the team with a big error, which is followed by another while he is trying to atone for the first. Talk to those who watched him regularly at St Mary’s before his move north and they will say those mistakes were always there to see.

What of Van Dijk, then?

Is he Franco Baresi reincarnate? Not quite. He can be quite a passive defender, which is arguably the very opposite of what Liverpool’s reactive backline requires.

There are also significant questions about his positional play, which are overlooked by many when they are, with respect, buried down the order on Match of the Day. Van Dijk uses his pace to make up for these positional lapses and often gets away with it but whether he plays his football at Southampton, Liverpool or elsewhere over the next few years, there will be times when his limitations are exposed.

So, if Van Dijk moves to Liverpool, what happens if he made a mistake? Or more accurately: if Van Dijk moves to Liverpool, what happens when he makes a mistake, perhaps several of them? Then it will be time to do everything that Klopp has asked for over the last few weeks and months: to show faith; to encourage; to support; to believe that these flawed players can improve and trusting them to do so.

Saints fail to back ‘Big Six’ plan to cream off more TV cash

Show/hide article…

SAINTS played their part in ensuring Premier League clubs today failing to agree on a plan to change the way they share income from the top flight’s overseas broadcasting deals.

The league’s so-called ‘Big Six’ - Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham - want to cream off more of the millions available for themselves.

With a two-thirds majority needed to change the current set-up, PL executive chairman Richard Scudamore had hoped to persuade at least 14 of the other 20 clubs to back the proposal in London.

But with the clubs firmly split into two camps, there was no need for a vote and it was decided they should discuss the matter further and try to find some common ground next month.

Under the current rules, the league’s growing overseas broadcast revenues are shared evenly but the ‘Big Six’ believe they should get a bigger share because of their greater popularity abroad.

Scudamore’s proposed compromise is to allocate 35 per cent of the overseas pot according to final league position, which is a similar formula to how the domestic rights are shared out.

Last season, this would have given Chelsea an extra £12.4m and reduced Sunderland’s take by the same amount.

But with the Premier League’s overseas income rising faster than its domestic revenue, this differential would only grow.

Going into the meeting, it seemed that only Everton, Leicester and West Ham were minded to side with the ‘Big Six’ in backing the proposal which would, in theory, leave the top 13 better off.

But Newcastle and Watford were, at least, tempted by the idea.

Unfortunately for Scudamore, the likes of Saints, Crystal Palace, Stoke and Swansea remain strongly opposed to any attempt to weaken the principle of revenue-sharing.

While the more established clubs claim it is their global brands that are driving the rise in the Premier League’s foreign TV rights, those against the change say it is the league’s competitive balance which is so popular abroad and that hinges on a more egalitarian split of the income.

The league’s current domestic deals bring in more than £5billion over three seasons - a figure that rose by 70 per cent in 2012 and 70 per cent in 2015.

But with BT and Sky Sports unlikely to dig that deep again, most analysts are predicting a much more modest uplift in 2018 for the 2019-21 cycle.

Global rights, on the other hand, have a lot more upside, with the Chinese rights recently going for 10 times the previous amount and the deals for Brazil and the United States doubling in value.

The league has more than 80 deals with overseas broadcasters and they already bring in more than £1billion a season.

That figure is only going to rise and this has focused attention on a revenue stream that was not worth arguing about when the league was set up in 1992.

Back then, the intention was for the champions to take approximately twice as much in shared revenue as the bottom team but, with the equal share of international rights (more than £39million a club last season), the ratio has shrunk to closer to 1.5:1 now.

That, coupled with the shock to the system that was Leicester’s title triumph in 2016, has encouraged the richest clubs to agitate for a rethink.

Today’s failure to reach agreement is a defeat for them and Scudamore.

Another defeat next month, however, would undoubtedly revive talk of breakaway leagues and clubs selling their own rights - bringing an end to a 25-year truce that has seen the Premier League become a leading national export and the world’s richest football league.
