Ward-Prowse out to fight for his Saints place

Show/hide article…

James Ward-Prowse doesn’t want to have another relaxing international break – and insists he is focussed on forcing his way back into the Saints and England set-up.

The midfielder has been away for pretty much every international fortnight for years as part of the England under-21 squad and, more recently, when winning his first cap with Gareth Southgate’s full Three Lions team.

However, this time, after a difficult start to the season which has seen him struggle to hold down a place in Mauricio Pellegrino’s starting line-up, Ward-Prowse finds himself with time on his hands.

He has been beavering away at Staplewood trying to impress Pellegrino for what he hopes will be a return to the team when Saints host Newcastle a week on Sunday and, ultimately, the chance to get back to the England side.

He said: “It’s every player’s ultimate dream to play for England.

“I am lucky enough to have had that experience and I want to be back there as quickly as possible, but ultimately I have to be playing at the club to warrant and show the manager I am good enough to be in the England squad. I am eager and keen to do that.

“As a player you always criticise yourself when things aren’t too good, and you look at what you need to do to be in the team.

“Every player goes through these sorts of periods and you need to find a way to keep your head and keep focussed on what you want to achieve, and I feel as though I am doing that well and it’s just a case of taking an opportunity when it comes my way.”

Ward-Prowse has found himself starting the last three games on the bench, and searching for his best role in Pellegrino’s vision for Saints.

“I have always played in a deeper midfield role, and that’s where I see myself playing,” he reflected. “I spoke to him about it and about playing a more advanced and attacking role, which of course I am willing to as well.

“I am willing to fit in to play any system the manager wants me to play in and I am always learning and trying to develop my game in different areas.

“That’s an ongoing process which is a challenge but it’s a good one at that.”

He added: “I think it helps with getting a regular starting role in the team. It gives you that confidence and belief in yourself and that’s how I got into the England squad last year, because I had that positive feeling and regular games.

“All aspects of your game you are always looking to improve and I want to do different things so I am generally trying to improve everything.

“You have got to be ready for the chance, and whether you are on the bench or starting the game you have to be ready for any situation.

“Starting or not you have to keep your head and make sure you are focussed on the job ahead.”

Steven Davis: This is how Northern Ireland can beat world champions Germany

Show/hide article…

The Southampton captain was part of the side which lost to the Germans at Euro 2016 and again this time last year in the World Cup qualifying campaign.

But with a play-off place up for grabs, captain Davis has called for fans to get Windsor Park rocking to help knock the Group C leaders off the stride.

“It will be physically and mentally draining and we will obviously need a lot of things to go right for us but we have to believe we can win the game and we are going to give it a right go,” said Davis.

“We know exactly what they are capable of because we have played them a couple of times recently and it is going to be another huge test for us. If we are to take anything from it everyone will have to perform.

“We’ll also need the fans behind us. Hopefully the crowd at Windsor Park can make it another special night for us and an uneasy one for them. If we could win it would be very special.”

Davis, will win his 98th cap, having played in famous previous victories over England and Spain at Windsor Park.

Salisbury boss urges Saints and Cherries fans to “give us a go” on Non-League Day

Show/hide article…

SALISBURY are hoping to entice some Saints and Cherries fans to the Ray Mac on Saturday to celebrate Non-League Day.

The Whites have announced three special initiatives for their FA Trophy preliminary round tie at home to Paulton Rovers (3pm).

The Wiltshire club are keen to reward existing fans and hopefully tempt some new ones in on an afternoon when both Southampton and AFC Bournemouth are out of action because of the international weekend.

Salisbury are offering fans free car parking, a half-price matchday programme for just £1 and a £50 cash prize for the lucky programme winner to be drawn at half-time.

Boss Steve Claridge, who started out in non-League football with Fareham Town before building a professional career, said: “Non-League Day is always a big deal. It’s great for the game at this level to have a bit of a spotlight when there are no Premier League or Championship games on.

“We wanted to reward our loyal supporters with a bit of an offer and maybe encourage fans of Southampton or Bournemouth to give us a go and see what a smashing experience Non-League football can be for all the family.

“We couldn’t discount admission prices as we have to share the revenue with Paulton, but we hope free car parking and a deal on the match programme goes some way to saying thank you to regulars and attracts a few new fans.”

Gates open at 1.30pm, along with the Sarum Suite bar. Admission prices are £9 adults, £6 senior citizens and students, £2 5-16 year-olds and under-5s free.

Salisbury have already enjoyed knockout success this week, winning 2-1 at Dorchester Town in the BigFreeBet.com Challenge Cup – Marvin Brooks and Lewis Benson on target.

Five Saints players set for international action

Show/hide article…

First up, Jan Bednarek will hope to win his second senior cap when Poland take on Armenia in World Cup qualifying at Republican Stadium in Yerevan (5pm BST).

Poland are currently of Group E and would secure qualification by taking four points from the trip to Armenia and a home clash with Montenegro.

Young centre-back Christoph Klarer is also set for action with Austria Under-18s as they travel to face their Netherlands counterparts in a friendly at the KNVB Academy in Zeist (5.30pm BST).

Ryan Bertrand and Fraser Forster are both included in the England squad to face Slovenia at Wembley in World Cup qualifying (7.45pm BST).

Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions are five points clear at the top of Group F, having clocked up six victories and two draws from their eight matches thus far.

Steven Davis will lead Northern Ireland as they take on Group C leaders Germany at Windsor Park (7.45pm BST).

They have already secured second place and Michael O’Neill says the side can play the world champions with no fear.

Northern Ireland prepared for “mentally draining” meeting with Germany - Davis

Show/hide article…

Northern Ireland skipper Steven Davis admits playing Germany is like facing 12 men ahead of their Group C decider.

Michael O’Neill’s side have lost twice to the world champions in the last 16 months and Davis says it feels like they have an extra man because they retain the ball so well.

“When you play Germany, it’s like you’re up against an extra man,” said the Southampton midfielder before Thursday’s match in Belfast.

“They’re very clever in their movements and the positions they take up. You have to be fully concentrated for the whole match.

“It will be physically and mentally draining and if you switch off for one second, they can hurt you.”

O’Neill has practised playing without the ball to replicate defending against Thomas Muller and co.

“We created a situation where we played with a higher number of players in the opposition team to try to give them an insight into how the game will be,” said the Irish boss.

“We played with an extra player in certain positions to create the level of possession they may have and how to counteract that.”

Northern Ireland are all but assured of a play-off spot and O’Neill tried to ease the pressure on his squad by insisting tonight’s clash at Windsor Park will not wreck all their fine work.

“We shouldn’t fear the outcome of the game,” he said. “The players have done the work in this group, guaranteed second spot and put ourselves in a really strong position for the play-offs. Whatever happens will not take away from that.”

Germany, who have won all eight of their qualifiers, need just a point to reach Russia, but come into the game on the back of the Bundesliga sides’ poor performances in Europe.

German teams have won just one of their opening 12 games in the Champions League and Europa League and Joachim Low feels it is a wake-up call for the Bundesliga.

“It’s alarming,” said the German coach. “We know there is talent all around the world and the Bundesliga isn’t the be all and end all. But the players are confident and ready.”

Big Saints Quiz raises over £4,000

Show/hide article…

Just shy of 50 teams took part in Southampton FC’s annual charity quiz at St Mary’s on Wednesday evening, with an additional seven teams of London-based fans tuning in from Russell Square Grosvenor Casino via live stream.

The event, which was supported by Swiss Watch Trader, aimed to raise funds and awareness for the club’s charitable arm, Saints Foundation, and generated over £4,000 to further enhance their work in the local community.

Club legend Matt Le Tissier and current first-team striker Charlie Austin jointly compèred the evening, while the quiz tested participants knowledge on all things Southampton FC and other footballing trivia.

The winners, comically entitled ‘Beercalona’, won a tour of the club’s Staplewood Campus with Director of Football Les Reed.

All proceeds from the night will go directly to Saints Foundation, as they continue their work in tackling a wide range of issues for young people and adults at risk in the local area.

The club would like to thank everyone who attended, and gave generously for this great cause.

Austin and Ward-Prowse fire Saints to friendly victory

Show/hide article…

CHARLIE Austin and James Ward-Prowse netted for Saints in a friendly against Fulham this afternoon at Staplewood.

Mauricio Pellegrino deployed a strong side for this 80 minute match, which was set-up for fringe players and those not on international duties to get some game time.

And both goal-scorers certainly gave the St Mary’s chief something to think about as they fired Saints to victory with second half goals.

Austin, who has not started a single Premier League game this season, finished off a counter-attack which saw Nathan Redmond cut the ball across the face of goal for the striker to slam home.

Another outcast Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who has not played a minute of football this season for the first team, had his hand in the second goal.

The Danish midfielder’s shot was parried by Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli and Ward-Prowse was waiting in the area to finish it off.
