COMMENT: So, what now for Van Dijk?

Show/hide article…

All that talk, all the back page headlines, all the speculation, and we end up where we started.

The summer transfer window opened with Virgil van Dijk very much a Southampton FC player.

And it slammed shut last night at 11pm with the Dutchman still very much a Southampton FC player.

No bids, no £70m offers, no pictures of van Dijk arriving at John Lennon Airport on Merseyside.

Now it gets really interesting.

After all, we are talking about a player who handed in a transfer request less than a month ago after being fined two weeks wages.

We are talking about a player who has repeatedly told Saints he wanted to leave - half a year after signing a new six-year deal worth around £80,000 a week.

“Over the past six months I have held numerous discussions with representatives of the board, the former manager Claude Puel as well as the new manager Mauricio Pellegrino to inform them all of my desire to leave the club in search of a new challenge,” van Dijk said in a statement.

“I have been left frustrated by the club’s position that I am not for sale and am disappointed that enquiries from multiple top clubs have been consistently rebuffed.”

We must now presume he was left even more frustrated by the fact the transfer window shut and he remained at St Mary’s.

For once, thankfully, a player didn’t get things all his own way.

Prams were left without toys in, but Virgil van Dijk woke up this morning knowing he now faces a major bridge rebuilding exercise.

We can only guess at his fitness levels - bearing in mind he hasn’t played a single game since January 22 - but presume he will now rejoin his first team squad colleagues in training.

That is the easy bit, for his fellow Saints players are also his friends.

No, the hard part now for van Dijk is to try and win back the the affections of the St Mary’s fanbase.

That will not be easy, not when he issued the statement he did.

“I had very much hoped to retain the good relationship I’ve always enjoyed with everyone at the club, especially the fans, but unfortunately in light of everything that’s happened this has now been seriously affected,” van Dijk also said.

“The time for me to move on is now and I hope to be able to work with the club to find the best resolution to suit all parties.”

Saints worked hard to find the best resolution for themselves. Bear in mind, after all, that the club will always be bigger than one individual. And the best resolution for Saints was to keep one of their best players.

No, their best player.

For that they should be congratulated.

Players must realise they don’t hold all the cards these days.

They don’t always get what they want, and for that we must be grateful - even if Jurgen Klopp might not share that opinion.

Perhaps the ending might have been different had Liverpool played their cards another one earlier this summer.

If they hadn’t been forced into issuing a grovelling apology to Saints, van Dijk might well be a Red by now.

“Liverpool FC would like to put on record our regret over recent media speculation regarding Southampton FC and player transfers between the two clubs,” the statement said.

“We apologise to the owner, board of directors and fans of Southampton for any misunderstanding regarding Virgil van Dijk.

“We respect Southampton’s position and can confirm we have ended any interest in the player.”

Perhaps Liverpool were telling the truth there. Perhaps they did end their interest at that stage.

Chances are they didn’t, though. They just needed Saints to contact them first, for Saints to force the issue so to speak.

But Saints were hardly likely to do that, where they?

The ball is not in van Dijk’s court, whether he likes it or not.

He has not got many options.

  1. He can carry on refusing to make himself available for first team games. No doubt if he did, Saints can find some way of fining him. Though the first team would obviously be stronger if he did play, the recent signing of Wesley Hoedt at least gives Mauricio Pellegrino another good option.

And if van Dijk doesn’t play, and Hoedt does, then the latter could find himself going to the World Cup next summer. A World Cup van Dijk could be watching on tv at home.

  1. He can make himself available for Saints again.

Good news for Pellegrino, but van Dijk then faces the tough task of showing the fans he is mentally right for a return.

He hasn’t played since January. He is going to need a few games to get back in the swing of things. He could certainly do without making many - if any - mistakes in his first few matches, otherwise fans will say his still heart isn’t in it.

They could well be totally wrong, but that is a potential problem for van Dijk all of his own creation.

It is his problem, and no-one else’s.

Overall, then, how impressive was Saints’ work in the 2017 summer transfer window?

They kept van Dijk, which many fans would have thought unlikely back in May, and strengthened their central defensive and central midfield departments as well.

The club’s management have shown they are no longer prepared to be ridden rough-shod over by the Premier League’s elite.

I’m sure they never were, but the perception by some was totally different.

Fair play, then, to Ralph Krueger and Les Reed for remaining strong throughout the window at a very difficult time.

I would still have liked Saints to have added some extra pace, or brought in another striker.

Pellegrino only really has three striking options - Manolo Gabbiadini, Charlie Austin and Shane Long.

For a club who covet challenging for a European place, I ask the questions many supporters have continually posed - is that enough?

As always, time will tell.

Rafa Benitez left upset as Newcastle miss out on late Targett, Perez and Kenedy deals

Show/hide article…

The Toon chief wanted to bring in up to four players before the window shut but ended up with none when Matt Targett’s proposed loan move from Southampton collapsed after the two clubs failed to agree terms. It capped a hugely frustrating day for Benitez, who is left to work with a Newcastle squad he fears will struggle in the months ahead. Benitez himself had contacted Southampton early yesterday morning in a bid to push through a deal for Targett. But while the left-back was keen to join the Magpies, the move broke down over the loan fee.

It wasn’t the only setback for Benitez who had hoped to clinch deals for Chelsea’s Kenedy and Lucas Perez of Arsenal. Only last week, Benitez claimed that after missing out on most of his top targets in the close-season, Newcastle required significant strengthening to establish themselves back in the Premier League. And even after beating West Ham 3-0 on Saturday, he insisted nothing had changed and his squad still lacked the quality he wanted. Owner Mike Ashley had demanded Benitez shed his fringe players and the Spaniard kept his side of the bargain.

“Newcastle missed out on deadline day deals for Matt Targett, Lucas Perez and Kenedy” But despite trimming the wage bill and bringing in significant funds by offloading Siem de Jong, Manu Riviere, Grant Hanley and Tim Krul, Benitez failed in his recruitment drive. Where that leaves his relationship with Ashley remains to be seen. Last month, he virtually accused the sports magnate of breaking promises he made at a face to face meeting between the pair in May – the last time they spoke. And last week Benitez hinted that he no longer sees Newcastle as a long-term project for him. He had started the day hopeful of landing Perez, Kenedy and Targett but just as he missed out on keeper Willy Caballero and forward Tammy Abraham earlier this summer, Benitez was left ruing the ones that got away.

Newcastle had been willing to sell last season’s 23 goal top scorer Dwight Gayle if a suitable replacement became available and Perez was the goalscorer the former Real Madrid and Liverpool coach had identified as his No. 1 target. But by mid-afternoon, the Magpies formally turned down a £15m offer from Championship side Fulham, having conceded defeat in their own bid to land another forward. While there was no repeat of the situation six years ago when Newcastle sold Andy Carroll to Liverpool without having time to replace him, Gayle must buckle down in the knowledge that his manager was willing to sell him. Gayle was axed from the Toon squad last weekend after two poor displays but will be back in the mix for Sunday weeks’ trip to Swansea with Aleksandar Mitrovic starting a three-match ban for elbowing West Ham’s Manuel Lanzini.

Premier League transfers: How much did your club spend?

Show/hide article…

Premier League transfers: How much did your club spend?

Premier League clubs spent a record £1.47billion during the summer transfer window - but how much did your club spend?

The total expenditure surpassed last summer’s previous record, when the £1billion threshold was smashed for the first time, by almost £300m.

Manchester City splashed the most cash this summer, with an outlay of £217.3m - primarily on defensive signings Kyle Walker (£50m), Benjamin Mendy (£49.2m), Danilo (£26.9m) and goalkeeper Ederson (£34.7m) - in addition to midfielders Bernardo Silva (£43m) and Douglas Luiz (£10m).

Chelsea overtook Manchester United as the next biggest spenders on Deadline Day, with last-minute signings Davide Zappacosta (£23m) and Danny Drinkwater (£35m) joining fellow summer acquisitions Antonio Rudiger (£34m), Tiemoue Bakayoko (£40m) and Alvaro Morata (£70m) to total £202m.

United spent £169.5m on blockbuster signings Romelu Lukaku (£90m), Nemanja Matic (£40m) and Victor Lindelof (£39.5m), while Jose Mourinho also re-signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic on a free transfer.

In contrast, Stoke spent the least on new acquisitions, with just a £25m outlay, the money going on defender Kevin Wimmer (£18m from Spurs) and making Bruno Martins Indi (£7m from Porto) a permanent member of Mark Hughes’ squad.

Lukaku’s switch from Everton to United was the most expensive Premier League deal during the window, followed by Morata, Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette (£52.7m) and City full-backs Walker and Mendy.

Despite being among the big spenders this season, Everton received the most income from player sales with £109.75m - primarily from Lukaku’s move to Manchester United.

The Toffees also offloaded Gerard Deulofeu to Barcelona for £10.5m, Tom Cleverley to Watford for £8m and Gareth Barry switched to West Brom for £1m.

Chelsea raked in £109m from player departures, including Matic (£40m), Nathan Ake (£20m), Juan Cuadrado (£17m), Asmir Begovic (£10m), Bertrand Traore (£8.8m), Nathaniel Chalobah (£7m) and Christian Atsu (£6.2m).

Manchester City received £83.24m, offloading Kelechi Iheanacho (£25m), Wilfried Bony (£12m), Enas Unal (£12m), Aaron Mooy (£10m), Nolito (£7.9m), Fernando (£5.64m) and Aleksandar Kolarov (£4.5m) - but the sales failed to mitigate their league-topping spending spree.

Other clubs that received above-average funds from selling players included Arsenal (£70.5m), Tottenham (£68m), Swansea (£59m) and Burnley (£48.5m).

Conversely, Bournemouth, Brighton and Crystal Palace did not receive one penny from player sales, while West Brom only collected £2m, followed by Huddersfield (£5.4m) and Watford (£5.8m).

Manchester United recorded the biggest net spend, dipping into the club’s coffers for £160.5m - after replenishing only £9m from player sales.

Neighbours City were £134.06m in the red this summer, followed by Chelsea (-£93m), Watford (-£51.7m), Liverpool (-£46.5m) and Everton (-£43.15m).

Only five clubs registered a net profit from transfer dealings, led by Swansea with +£19.5m in the black.

Interestingly, north London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham were both among those clubs - making more from player sales than they spent on new players.

The Gunners made a net profit of +£17.8m, with the sales of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (£40m), Wojciech Szczesny (£13.5m), Gabriel (£10m) and Kieran Gibbs (£7m) offsetting their £52.7m coup of Lacazette in July.

Spurs collected £50m for Walker and £18m for Wimmer before splashing almost all those profits on Davidson Sanchez for £38.4m and Serge Aurier for £23m, while Stoke (+£11m) and Burnley (+£9m) also made profit.

Everton, Watford and newly-promoted duo Huddersfield and Brighton made more signings than any of the other clubs - each adding 13 new players to their ranks - while the Terriers also completed a league-high three loan deals.

In contrast, Arsenal were the least active Premier League club - only signing Lacazette, and Sead Kolasinac on a free transfer in early July - followed by Manchester United, Liverpool, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Southampton (four signings each).

In terms of outgoings, Chelsea offloaded the equivalent of four teams, with 43 players leaving Stamford Bridge - of which 29 have sought experience elsewhere on loan.

Manchester City (36 departures), Everton (28), Swansea (24), Arsenal (22), Burnley, Liverpool (both 21) and Newcastle (20) also parted company with players in abundance, on a temporary or permanent basis.

Southampton and Manchester United offloaded the fewest players - each parting company with 12 players over the summer, followed by Watford (13 players), Bournemouth, Brighton and Leicester (14 each).

Liverpool Transfer News: Van Dijk still wanted, Coutinho deal dead claim, Sakho seals exit

Show/hide article…

Liverpool will target Virgil Van Dijk in future despite Southampton’s determination not to sell their wantaway skipper.

That’s according to respected Merseyside football reporter Paul Joyce, who says Saints knew the Reds were prepared to pay £70m for the centre-back this summer.

Liverpool were forced to abandon plans to get Van Dijk, 26, on-board when they faced tapping up accusations in June.

That’s not put them off long-term though and Joyce says Jurgen Klopp will try to sign the former Celtic ace again.

Unhappy Van Dijk won’t play before January: Saints should have sold to Liverpool - Merson

Show/hide article…

That is what player-turned-pundit Paul Merson believes.

Liverpool were keen to sign the wantaway centre-half this summer, having attracted interest from Chelsea and Manchester City too.

But Southampton held firm and refused to offload their captain.

A price-tag of around £70m had been mooted for Van Dijk, but no club came in with an offer before the deadline closed last night.

Despite Southampton managing to keep him, Merson feels the damage has been done and he won’t feature at St Mary’s again.

Premier League net spend - we look at how much each club invested this summer

Show/hide article…

Tottenham and Swansea were the big winners on transfer deadline day while Chelsea and Arsenal were left to ponder the ones that got away.

Spurs, so often the masters of the late deals, brought in striker Fernando Llorente from the Swans as the clocked ticked 11pm, having earlier landed £23million defender Serge Aurier from Paris Saint-Germain.

Swansea wasted little time recruiting Llorente’s replacement, unveiling their former favourite Wilfried Bony from Manchester City. But possibly the deal of the day came when the Swans announced the signing of exciting Bayern Munich midfielder Renato Sanches on loan.

Swansea boss Paul Clement spent time as Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant at Bayern last season and used his contacts to pull off the shock move for the 20-year-old, who was named the best young player at Euro 2016.

As for champions Chelsea, they were left stunned when Ross Barkley turned his back on a £35million switch in a dramatic late twist. The Everton midfielder had travelled to London and undergone a medical when, with less than an hour of the window remaining, he apparently had a change of heart and opted to stay at Goodison Park.

As well as Barkley and Llorente, the Blues also missed out on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who opted to move from Arsenal to Liverpool in one of the biggest transfers of the day worth £35m.

They did, however, eventually manage to bring in midfielder Danny Drinkwater on a five-year contract from Leicester - also for a reported £35m - while defender Davide Zappacosta agreed a four-year deal from Torino.

Arsenal, meanwhile, failed to sign Monaco’s Thomas Lemar, despite offering a reported £92m, and are now left with unsettled Chile forward Alexis Sanchez entering the final year of his contract as his switch to Manchester City subsequently failed to materialise.

Arsene Wenger’s dithering has actually seen Arsenal finish the summer window having made a healthy profit for player trading, but what about other clubs? Here we detail every club’s net spend.

Transfer window report card: Club-by-club rating

Show/hide article…

The most expensive transfer window in history has finally closed with Premier League fans around the world debating whether their club has been winners or losers.

A staggering £1.4billion was spent by the 20 top-flight clubs with 14 of them breaking their transfer records, from Chelsea to Huddersfield. But there were plenty of tears too, most notably from Arsene Wenger, Antonio Conte and Pep Guardiola who missed out on long-term targets in the final hours on deadline day.

Sportsmail assesses the window for each club and delivers our report card.

A late £92million bid for Monaco’s Thomas Lemar smacked of either desperation or showmanship. Either way, it didn’t come off and Alexis Sanchez couldn’t go to Manchester City as a result.

Arsene Wenger can point to signing £53m striker Alexandre Lacazette and hard-man Sead Kolasinac but neither started Arsenal’s last game at Liverpool. He also lost Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to Liverpool.

Eddie Howe added youth in £20m Chelsea defender Nathan Ake and experience with Asmir Begovic and Jermain Defoe heading to the south coast.

The option to turn Jack Wilshere’s loan move into a permanent deal wasn’t taken up and the fact the Cherries were quiet on deadline day despite interest in Demarai Gray suggests they are aware of financial fair play.

The newly-promoted side were busy with 13 new signings but unluckily for Chris Hughton he missed out other key targets Raphael Dwamena, Tammy Abraham and Stefano Denswil.

Brighton signed two top-class goalkeepers in Mathew Ryan and Tim Krul but they will be reliant on £16m winger Jose Izquierdo providing goals as well as assists

None of Sean Dyche’s seven signings came from overseas clubs as the Burnley manager stuck to tried and trusted methods.

Record signing Chris Wood started well with a goal at Spurs but he’ll have big shoes to fill with Andre Gray leaving for Watford. Michael Keane was another big departure but the Clarets will feel Jon Walters, Phil Bardsley and others have the necessary knowhow

An alarmingly mixed window. Alvaro Morata and Tiemoue Bakayoko look great additions in particular, while Danny Drinkwater was signed right at the death.

But the squad looks unbalanced and Conte can not be happy that striker targets Romelu Lukaku and Fernando Llorente ended up elsewhere in a summer he also lost Dominic Solanke and Tammy Abraham.

Never has one club’s future depended so much on one player with Palace spending almost their entire budget on Liverpool’s £26m defender Mamadou Sakho, a Selhurst Park cult hero after helping them avoid relegation on loan last season.

Frank de Boer’s only other cash signing was Ajax defender Jairo Riedewald. At least the Eagles didn’t lose anyone, including Wilfried Zaha.

Ronald Koeman would have liked one additional striker but overall he’s got to be happy after a transfer window which saw Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane, Davy Klaasen, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Sandro Ramirez and Wayne Rooney arrive at Goodison Park.

A lot of the money was recouped by selling Romelu Lukaku but Ross Barkley stays after the mysterious collapse of his move to Chelsea

Manager David Wagner acted boldly on his strategy of bringing in hungry and talented players rather than going for experience. Of his 12 signings, only Tom Ince and goalkeeper Robert Green had played in the Premier League.

The advantage of early dealings was underlined by the Terriers having a great start with three clean sheets and £12m striker Steve Mounie among the goals.

Craig Shakespeare strengthened at both ends of the pitch with Harry Maguire, Aleksandr Dragovic and Kelechi Iheanacho, and kept his main men Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez.

The only downside was losing one of his key Premier League title stalwarts Danny Drinkwater to Chelsea on deadline day. Without the distraction of Europe this season, Shakespeare will see this as a top-eight squad

Philippe Coutinho’s transfer request dominated the summer at Anfield and their pursuit of Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk backfired badly.

On the positive side, Jurgen Klopp broke their transfer record on winger Mo Salah, who has started well, and the German boss beat Chelsea to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on deadline day. Reds fans will be concerned about lack of defensive recruits.

Pep Guardiola will have been delighted with his window until the final 24 hours having signed Bernardo Silva, Benjamin Mendy, Kyle Walker, Danilo and Benfica goalkeeper Ederson to make City the Premier League’s biggest spenders.

But it went sour late on with neither Alexis Sanchez nor Jonny Evans landed. He’ll have to make do with Eliaquim Mangala as his defensive cover instead.

Jose Mourinho was able to put on his dressing-gown and slippers for deadline day with key targets Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof already landed and Zlatan Ibrahimovic re-signed.

He will also be relieved that Rooney’s departure to Everton was handled sensitively and without rancour. United’s early business has helped them to a 100 per cent start.

Mike Ashley hardly endeared himself to Rafa Benitez with a very modest summer outlay.

While many clubs broke the bank, Newcastle’s record signing remains Michael Owen dating back to 2005. Benitez has new young blood in Christian Atsu and Jacob Murphy, while Joselu is an under-rated centre-forward. But the Toon Army will have wanted a lot more.

Saints made their point by resisting pressure to sell Virgil van Dijk and it’s important he is assimilated back into the squad quickly.

Midfielder Mario Lemina arrived from Italy for a club record £16m and Polish defender Jan Bednarek was also added, with Jay Rodriguez offloaded to West Brom. A sensible window in which the club shed their sell-sell-sell image.

Stoke didn’t want to sell Marko Arnautovic and received a decent £23m fee which they helped put towards Kevin Wimmer, Bruno Indi Martins, Darren Fletcher and a loan move for Jese.

Mark Hughes will feel he’s got a better-balanced squad now and did well to get Giannelli Imbula, Bojan, Glenn Whelan and Philipp Wollscheid away.

While other clubs have spent fortunes, Swansea have been able to turn a profit of £31m, the best balance sheet of the window.

They got top price for Sigurdsson and Llorente and replaced them with Abraham, Wilfried Bony and Renato Sanches, who has signed on loan from Bayern Munich with a big reputation after helping Portugal win Euro 2016

Chairman Daniel Levy will be satisfied that after being the last club to enter the market, he’s given Mauricio Pochettino three key acqusitions; £42m defender Davinson Sanchez, Llorente and PSG right-back Serge Aurier who will replace Walker at less than half the price.

Most importantly, the feared brain drain didn’t happen and Harry Kane and Dele Alli remain.

Marco Silva has given the Hornets a whole new feelgood factor and there has been a nice balance between overseas recruits (Richarlison, Marvin Zeegelaar) with British players (Nathaniel Chalobah, Andre Gray).

After a bright start to the season, nobody is tipping Watford to go down and club captain Troy Deeney also stayed despite a link with Everton.

The purse strings were loosened for Tony Pulis by the club’s Chinese owners and he’ll be delighted with his work after a disappointing start to the window when Fletcher left for Stoke.

Fletcher was subsequently replaced by Gareth Barry but it’s the signings of Rodriguez, Kieran Gibbs, Ahmed Hegazi, Oliver Burke and PSG midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak that whet the appetite

Slaven Bilic went for experience in this window and the jury is still out whether the policy will work. Arnautovic blotted his copybook with a red card in his second game while Joe Hart and Pablo Zabaleta have missed the protection that injured midfielders Manuel Lanzini and Cheikhou Kouyate would have provided.

New striker Javier Hernandez has started well despite the team losing their first three games and Bilic still has Diafra Sakho as an option, despite the player’s freelance medical with Rennes.
