New transfer spending record for Premier League

Show/hide article…

The Premier League broke its own summer spend record during the August transfer window, which came to an end at midnight on Thursday.

According to Tim Bridge, of the Deloitte Sports Business Group, the recently ended window smashed the spending record of the top tier of the English game.

And he told Sky Sports News there is nothing to suggest this figure cannot increase further in years to come.

The total spend by Premier League clubs during the transfer window was more than £1.413bn, producing a net spend of £665m.

Bridge, a senior manager for Deloitte, explained: "It is an increase of 23 per cent on the previous summer transfer record and reflects the amount of money clubs have available to spend now on their long term future, such as players, stadiums and capital investments such as training grounds.

"About £0.7bn has gone overseas, which reflects the international image of the Premier League, as well as the overseas scouting networks clubs have.

“Around £0.6bn was between Premier League clubs, with about £100m going to the Football League.”

Bridge also pointed out that regarding percentages of available funds, this summer’s transfer spend was similar to previous years.

He added: "This year the figures have really caught the attention because of the scale.

"The Neymar transfer took the headlines, but if you look at the trend in the Premier League and how much of a club’s revenue they are spending on transfers, then this summer transfer window is not out of line with that trend.

"Clubs usually spend between 20-30 per cent of their revenue on transfers and this summer’s window is around the 30 per cent mark.

"So when asked if this level of spending is sustainable, then it is sustainable if the revenues continue to grow at the level it currently is.

“And as we are coming into a new television broadcast cycle, the year after next, then potentially we might see further revenue increases and transfer spend will increase with it.”

Bridge confirmed that the Premier League are the biggest spenders in Europe - by a hefty margin.

He added: "It’s the biggest in Europe by a considerable distance, this summer, followed by Serie A where a number of clubs have new investment - and they have spent around £720m.

“The transfer window is still open in La Liga, where they have another day to go, but all three of the other big five leagues have broken the £500m spend mark.”

Landmarks: Romelu Lukaku’s £75m move from Everton to Manchester United was the biggest between Premier League clubs.

Tottenham received £45m from Manchester City for Kyle Walker and Everton spent a similar amount to bring Gylfi Sigurdsson from Swansea, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain joined Liverpool from Arsenal for around £35m.

Only eight players arrived from France but they included fees of over £40m apiece to take Alexandre Lacazette to Arsenal, plus Benjamin Mendy and Bernardo Silva to Manchester City.

Tiemoue Bakayoko’s £34m move to Chelsea, and Serge Aurier joining Spurs on deadline day for £23m, helped Ligue 1 clubs rake in £205m from the Premier League.

Nine arrivals from La Liga totalled a reported £134.2m, with almost half of that spent by Chelsea on Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata.

In contrast, 13 arrivals from the Bundesliga totalled less than £40m, with the bulk of the money going on West Ham’s purchase of Javier Hernandez from Bayer Leverkusen and Oliver Burke’s move from Leipzig to West Brom.

Premier League clubs spend record £1.4bn on players

Show/hide article…

Premier League clubs spent a record £1.4billion on transfers this summer, with the net expenditure of £665million further cementing the English top flight’s place at the top the European football money tree.

After a busy transfer deadline day, which saw an unprecedented £210m spent and a string of big-money deals fall through, the total spend across the league’s 20 clubs is up more than 25 per cent compared to last summer.

That rise is 65 per cent when compared to the 2015 summer window, which was the last one before the league’s blockbuster £5bn TV deal, which kicked in from the following year.

It was also a record year for player sales, with the figure of £748m brought in equating to a 55 per cent rise on the 2016 window.

As a result the Premier League released a net figure of £665m, the transfer total once sales are deducted from overall spending, which was just £30m higher than last summer. This has differed slightly elsewhere, though.

Clubs spent a little under 15 per cent of their overall revenue on transfers, estimated this season to be a combined £4.5bn.

Manchester City (£215m), Chelsea (£180m), Manchester United (£145m) and Everton (£145m) all spent nine figures in the transfer market, but the overall net spend averages out at each club committing £33.25m.

While 14 of the 20 Premier League clubs broke their own transfer records only five - Arsenal, Burnley, Stoke City, Swansea and Tottenham, ended up in the black on their transfer dealings.

The Premier League also notes that its clubs will invest £443m in supporting wider English football and communities during the coming season.

Despite Paris Saint-German splashing a world-record £200m on Neymar, the Premier League kept its position as Europe’s biggest spender, investing almost twice as much as second-placed Serie A, which paid out £735m on playing talent.

In fact, the combined spend of clubs from Ligue 1, the Bundesliga and La Liga is only £170m more than the Premier League’s, although the Spanish transfer window does not close until Friday night.

This summer also saw Premier League clubs return to their traditional position of being net importers of players after making a small profit on player trading with their overseas rivals in January. This summer, the league’s net expenditure on foreign transfers was £585m, a decrease from 2016’s record of £630m.

Transfer Rater: Virgil van Dijk to Arsenal, Rafinha to Chelsea

Show/hide article…

Things change in the blink of an eye in football. The Football Whispers Index takes the latest transfer rumours and gives them a score out of five; the higher the score, the more realistic and reliable the whisper.

Here are today’s top five emerging whispers for the summer. And keep an eye on Transfer Talk for all the latest gossip.

Inter Milan failed to secure the signing of Shkodran Mustafi on deadline day after Arsenal rejected their loan offer. The Serie A side had hoped to take the German centre-back to the San Siro on loan for the season before making the move permanent in the summer. According to Sky Italia, Luciano Spalletti has now turned his attentions to Manchester City defender Mangala. The Frenchman was subject of a bid from Crystal Palace on deadline day before Mamadou Sakho arrived.

Barcelona are still trying to convince Liverpool to part ways with Philippe Coutinho. The Catalan club tabled an offer reportedly in the region of £138 million last night as they try to push through a move before the Spanish transfer window closes today. However, Spanish media outlet Diario Gol claim Barcelona have Mahrez as a plan B and will make a move if the latest Coutinho bid is rejected.

Chelsea may have completed the late signing of Davide Zappacosta but that won’t prevent Antonio Conte from pushing on with a move for Bayern Munich’s versatile full-back Rafinha. The former Juventus manager wanted to bring the 31-year-old to Stamford Bridge on deadline day and Sky Sources claim a bid was rejected. They failed to bring in a left-back to rival Marcos Alonso and may view Rafinha as a potential January signing.

Van Dijk’s deadline day move to Liverpool failed to materialise. Reports have emerged to reveal no bid was even made and the Merseyside based club will revisit their interest in the Dutch centre-back in January. However, they won’t be alone. According to the Times, Arsenal will rival them as they look to build a squad capable of finishing in the top four.

A left-back could be on the agenda for Man United if Luke Shaw fails to prove himself. It was revealed in early August that Jose Mourinho was prepared to give Shaw another chance but if he fails to take it the club will plan for life without the former Southampton full-back. Tierney is a long-term transfer target for those at Old Trafford and reports in the Independent suggest the club are still keeping a close eye on his development.

Premier League stars in limbo: What happens next for want-away men?

Show/hide article…

Over £1billion was spent and hundreds of moves were made in the biggest and most expensive transfer window in Premier League history.

However, many big money deals failed to materialise, leaving their subjects in an awkward situation on Friday morning as they face at least three months at clubs they seemed set to leave.

Sportsmail looks at six of the biggest stars in football purgatory, and asks the big question they will be asking themselves… what happens next?

This was not really Sanchez’s fault – he made it clear early on in the window he would like to move elsewhere, and a big money switch to Manchester City seemed certain.

However, when Arsenal could not bring in a suitable replacement, Alexis was stuck. He now faces a year of running down his contract, which expires next summer.

Sanchez seems ok to play this season, having represented the Gunners this campaign – but that was when he thought he was on the move. An unhappy star player is the icing on a very bitter cake for many loudly discontented Arsenal supporters.

Last seen: Crouched on the Anfield turf as Liverpool tucked the fourth goal of a thumping loss for Arsenal. Also played in a 3-0 defeat for Chile on Thursday night just after his City move collapsed.

With a transfer request and three Barcelona bids – going up to £130m – all rejected, Liverpool made it crystal clear they would not be selling the Brazilian playmaker, no matter how much he wanted to go.

Barcelona were spectacularly foolish in their pursuit of Coutinho – they assumed he would leave when Liverpool signed Thomas Lemar, despite only Arsenal bidding for the Monaco man – and have left him in a tight spot.

Coutinho must now return to the Liverpool team and hope Barca come back in 12 months and pick him out as the successor to Andres Iniesta as the midfield general.

Last seen: Other than scoring in Brazil’s 2-0 win over Ecuador on Thursday night, Coutinho has not played this season. His last competitive Liverpool game was a 3-0 victory over Middlesbrough on the final day of Premier League 2016/17.

It started out with a text, it included an exclusive interview with Sportsmail at his family home in Brazil, and it ends with no resolution.

Costa has made it clear he won’t play for Chelsea under Antonio Conte after the Italian told the striker he was no longer needed via text message. As a result he is currently sat at his parents’ digs in Lagarto, as Adam Crafton found out.

Costa is holding out for a return to Atletico Madrid – who were under FIFA transfer embargo this summer. He will hope they remember to sign him when January rolls around.

Last seen: Costa’s last Chelsea game - barring a remarkable U-turn - looks like being the FA Cup final defeat to Arsenal.

After a club is forced to apologise for bungling a transfer so badly, it should be no surprise they do not go back in for that same player again.

Liverpool did not resurrect their bid for Van Dijk following Southampton’s complaint, and the Dutchman is still stuck in the reserves at St. Mary’s.

Van Dijk might have hoped new boss Mauricio Pellegrino would be more flexible than predecessor Claude Puel, but the Saints are determined to shed their image of a selling club, of being Liverpool’s feeder team. The ex-Celtic man may have to swallow his pride and play again.

Last seen: The longest absent of any player on this list, Van Dijk has not played since January 22 when he hurt his ankle against Leicester City.

This one is less a case of a transfer falling through and more one of a player quite spectacularly putting their foot in it.

In an ill-advised interview, Rose said of footballers Tottenham should sign: “Not players you have to Google and say, ‘Who’s that?’, I mean well-known players”. The Doncaster-born left back also said he would consider offers from northern clubs.

No such bids transpired, and Rose is left in the unimpressed company of new signings Davinson Sanchez, Juan Foyth, Paulo Gazzaniga and Fernando Llorente. He will surely be back in the first team after his knee injury, however.

Last seen: Rose suffered knee ligament damage against Sunderland on January 31 and has been out since then. He should be fit by October.

The strangest transfer tale of all this summer – Did he have a medical at Chelsea or not? Were Spurs ever really interested or was that all hot air? Why is the born-and-bred Scouser so keen to leave?

These questions may not be answered, but what is certain is that Barkley’s career is at a crossroads. Capable of superb footballing feats, his inconsistency seems to have worn down Ronald Koeman and prevented all bids, save a late, abortive £35m one from Chelsea.

It’s hard to imagine Barkley staying in Everton’s reserves until January – but that looks like being the hard reality.

Last seen: He played 64 minutes against Arsenal in the 3-1 defeat which ended Everton’s campaign last season, and has played no part in this one or their Europa League fixtures.
